Mackie Help

Right folks look for some help on this. I recently brought a second hand pair of Mackies and so gave them a clean and a test run on a gig last night. I have to admit when I viewed/heard them I thought they sounded abit off but considering it was in a small room with them on the floor being ran from some "budget" equipment there was too many variables for me to think it was just the speakers. Plus it was for a good price.......

Having ran them in a gig last night I could help but noticed it lacked bass and very "high endey". I had to EQ the hell out of it to get it anywhere near the quality that my other pair of 450s give me.

Now I'm not very good with speaker repair but does anyone have any idea what it could be. These are intended to be used as a hire pair so I will borrow some other peoples ears to see if its just my trained ear that picks up on it or whenever they do need repairing.

Have you looked inside to see if they have the original tweeters/woofer? Could have blown and been replaced by the previous owner with non standard parts.

Just to eliminate some basic problems, put both cabs on stands, or table or whatever, and face them towards each other with enough room to get your head between.
Then get an XLR lead, you know works, from your mixer to the first Mackie. Then get another XLR lead and go from the first Mackie to the second. It doesn't matter about stereo for this test.
The play some music, or even some test tones, and put your head between the cabs. (Obviously, don't have it too loud). The sound from both cabs should be the same. By moving your head up and down you'll be able to hear if the HF or LF drivers sound different, and this is why to have the cabs close together.
If they don't sound different then swap one of the new Mackies with one you already have or have borrowed. Again try the above and see (or hear!) what, if anything, is different.
If they are different, either with the new pair or the new & old test, then something else is amiss. But the above will eliminate phase problems, the usual problem of lacking LF extension. This will also show if the new cabs have been opened up and bits changed and/or things not put back correctly.
