R.I.P Robin Gibb

It has just hit the news that Robin gig has passed away after his long battle with cancer. He will be missed.
A huge loss to us all.

Sad loss indeed, years ago you could nearly do a whole night playing only Bee Gees songs, with Saturday Night Fever being the must have album.

I was never really in to the Bee Gees music (although my dad was a huge fan!) until Maurice died and I heard Robin perform the track Love Hurts with it's very haunting vocals and is a long way from anything the Bee Gees ever did. The track just left disco so far behind and showed how versatile Robin was. You can hear so much emotion in his voice and, although it's cover version, you can't fail to tell it was sang from the heart.

Are you serious? That's a horrible track, I doubt he'll want to be remembered by that ! More effects than emotion I'd say.

Very serious. Probably stems from the fact that I don't particularly like disco music so the majority of Bee Gees tracks don't appeal to me. The one track that I do like, thought, is You Win Again. It's a bit different from the Bee Gees "norm" and Robin's solo stuff, imo, was much better. However, I stress that this is my opinion as I'm sure that the vast majority of people would disagree with me.

As for being "more effects than emotion", he performed the track live on TOTP in 2003 (without the additional vocals of the album version) and it was very emotion-filled even though he'd been doing that particular song for some time in his solo shows. Also, in an interview following the death of Maurice, he said he felt that this song perfectly described how he was feeling and that the "love" in the title was the love between two brothers as opposed to between a couple "in"love. He also said he really enjoyed performing that track so I also disagree that he wouldn't want to be remembered for it. It was a hugely popular live track for "Robin Gibb" fans as opposed to "Bee Gees" fans.

I have to agree with that comment! When I was a child one of my earliest memories was my dad singing I Started A Joke. And For Whom The Bell Tolls, to me, is up there with You Win Again. Again, both tracks have steered clear of the "disco" style.

I've watched both of the Robin Gibb solo live tracks and although he is a good singer and 'I started a Joke' is one of my favorite tracks of all time, I think the strength was really the vocal harmonies of the brothers together. Together they were amazing. Alone they are just good IMO.
