I'm getting a bit of a belly and it's really annoying me. I hate exercising and like my food + lots of beer! :D

A mate has just done this five week course and look at the results - http://www.facebook.com/JRFHealth/posts/433183160034469

Do you think it's a con or worth a pop?

I am in exactly the same boat (no pun intended)as you Charlie - minus the beer bit.

If your mate did the course then surely you can see whether it is a con or not.

You don't need to shell out cash, its just simple maths....If you eat and drink more than you exercise or take part in any physical activity, you'll gain weight.

If you burn more calories than you consume, you'll lose weight. If you want a specific shape, you'll need to combine cardio with a range of intensities and appropriate weight and resistance excercises.

You are far better off integrating some sort of regular activity that you enjoy into your day to day routine, instead of some kind of intensive plan...short term input, short term fix.

Hmmm. To do the job properly i need about 8-10 pints of stella @ 300 calories per pint, but only about 1.5-2 bottles of wine @ 700 per bottle so it is supposedly better for you.

With me however, the main problem is food and lack of exercise.

There's no shortcuts - you have to exercise regularly to achieve anything (and make it part of your life, not just a few crash courses).

Apart from looking and feeling better you're also laying the foundations for later in life.

You need to join a club of some sort, very few people are motivated enough to exercise regularly (and properly) on their own, even top athletes need their coaches to push them.

The gym is ok as an addition to your main exercise, but I don't rate it for being the only exercise you do.

Personally I'd recommend something like Ju Jitsu - good work out, structured progress, friendly environment, confidence building.

But any sport is better than none.

Tell me about it. Currently training up for a run and have shifted a stone and a half in the last 2 months, so its very much "on topic" for me at the minute :)

I've built up a real liking for running though, and have been running 6k every other day for the last 10 weeks.

I use an app called Runkeeper, which is cool, GPS tracks your runs, Tells you speed, elevation, distance etc and if you happen to have a competitive edge, a really good way to race against yourself, each time you go out.

Google - High-intensity interval training. Great for fat loss.

...and get down the gym and start smashing the weights. Testosterone levels are at their highest in men of your age meaning you could potentially build muscle quickly (with the right diet)

It's not rocket science, i'd never pay anyone for personal training. I know what to do, I just choose not to do it. I prefer being a fatty.

Same here!
I didn't start touching alcohol until my early 20's. Before that I was doing Shotokan Karate every week and also played 5-a-side football too (but I was rubbish at that).
I don't excercise that much these days and I certainly like a good drink when I can. I have a belly on me and I'm not that bothered really but Charlie obviously is.
The belly will no doubt be the beer you love so much. I won't tell you (advise you) to cut down. You do what you like but don't go overboard. If you excercise as already advised, you may be able to do both (have a beer and not a belly). If you don't, the belly will get bigger!

Cut out booze, eat smaller portions of food which are healthier, cut down on carbs and red meat.

Exercise, go out cycling, running, country walks etc (all free!) and then you'll lose weight which will make your trousers loose.

Not all this "pay me £500 and you'll lose weight" rubbish.

Edit: And that photo is definately photoshopped. Just found another picture of him on FB (not difficult) which was taken on the 23rd May and he looks completely different!

I recommend to anyone trying to lose weight to increase their metabolism.
Build Muscle.
Shiver - wear less clothes when cold!
Drink caffeine drinks like tea or coffee as it raises you're heart rate - don't drink fizzy rubbish as it makes you feel thirsty and you think I've already had a drink I must be hungry.
If you eat lots for dinner - eat dinner for breakfast and have cereal for dinner.
You're body will be more effective at burning off calories if you've got a lot to shift and if you eat loads late at night (when you're metabolism is low) you make a backlog for the next day!

I learnt this because people always say the reason I'm thin is because of my metabolism and well the reason for my metabolism is that I do things to raise it. 10% of you're metabolism is genetic the rest is your lifestyle.

Also protein is harder to break down and actually burns loads more calories eating it 8x more calories are burnt digesting compared to fat I believe.

note: just like the commercials - these might not all be facts :)

Well I don't have anything to eat until 2.00pm ish.

Example -

Today, I had pate on toast with salad at 3.00 ish (first thing of the day)

Just had chicken and salad with bread.

Tonight at 2.00am ish I MAY get hungry and start snacking.

It's weird - some days I'll hardly eat anything, others I'll attack the fridge.

I need to cut down on the booze where I can, I'll easily drink 50/55 pints a week. Just bad habits.

and it's more 'man boobs' than belly!

I'm rubbish at eating Charlie but I was told years ago (because like you, I never used to eat until mid afternoon, skipped brekkie etc)... You have to have little and often as it gets the body working and doing what it's supposed to do.

Well yeah, I don't drink every day but every other day.

Monday - go to the local, I know the people in there.
Tuesday - always go out with mates, it's a ritual.
Wednesday - don't go out.
Thursday - other local down the road, I meet a chap in there and he could drink anyone under the table!
Friday - after work, I'll come back and unwind with drink.
Saturday - ditto.
Sunday - don't drink unless somethings happening.

I don't get really drunk or silly either like some people in town. I don't go out and think 'oh i need to get really boozed, I'm going to drink x amount' - I just take it & drink it. Easily 10 pints on the nights I go out. You lot haven't met Steve Jones!

Mum just to have a dairy and write down what I'd drink and when - that helped me cut down a lot!

TBH, when I was Charlies age I would go to the pub 6 nights a week. From memory I was probably drinking £300 of my wages each month and beer was about £1.80 a pint.

I'm in the same boat as you Charlie, and started creeping close to 14 stone (rather overweight for my mere 5'10" height)

I signed up ages ago to the livestrong website (http://www.livestrong.com/myplate). You start by filling in your main statistics, then set goals depending on how much weight you want to lose - this adjusts your recommended calorie intake amount which you can track online and via the Livestrong MyPlate app on your iPhone (unless you're still without of course...then you can't! :p )

It seems a bit of a chore at first "urgh, I can't be bothered tracking everything I eat and drink" but it becomes a novelty and takes no time at all to do. You can also track any exercise you do, do and it shows you how many calories you've burned.

The best part is the online charts and graphs where you can see your weight loss and what you're eating in a clear form, eating too many carbs? you can instantly see to adjust your diet accordingly.

I've been tracking for 10 weeks now and lost just under a stone (slipped-up over the past couple of weeks, nice weather + BBQs + Beer :( lol) but i'm back on it, limiting myself to 1300 calories a day, a few more if I do some exercise)

I'm definitely feeling better for it and certainly noticed a reduction in my gut (albeit a small one at the moment!)

So the main advice:
Reduce your calorie intake
Eat smarter, try to avoid processed foods, or at least limit them - stick to fresh produce, fruit, vegetables, real meat (I'm thinking no Turkey twizzlers, etc)
Don't miss breakfast - eat something high in carbs to give you energy for the rest of the day
Eat smaller meals, more often -Doing so will increase your metabolism and your body will burn more calories in the process.
Be more active - go for a walk before work, jog around your block, brief 15 minute bike ride - doesn't have to be too labouring or take up hours of your day.

I don't aim to be any sort of health guru by any stretch, but the philosophy above is working for me, and it's not costing me a fortune in Gym memberships, personal trainers or diet plans, just a few minutes a day to keep track.

You don't drink 50/55 pints a week, end of.

At Charlie's age, I didn't drink at all. I spent my 18th birthday at a local WMC with my mam and dad playing bingo and having 3 pints of shandy!!

By the age of 25, I was out with my mates five times a week. I was a postman and I finished work for ten am and was often in the pub or snooker club by eleven. These sessions often lasted until kicking out time and having between 12-15 pints (not to mention shorts) during a session was very common place. So I was often drinking in excess of 50 pints of beer (never drank lager - always found it tasteless!) in an average week. The result was my weight went from 8 stone at age 19 to god knows what. I'm now 36 and 16 stone so I'm still twice the man, so to speak, that I was 17 years ago. If I was doing this and not walking miles delivering the post 6 days a week for 11 years then my weight would've been even worse. Not something I'm proud of but that was me in a "former" life. I'm now part of the British Heart Foundation's Healthy Heart programme and am looking to do away this extra person I've picked up along the way. I also enjoy the occasional glass or two of wine but, other than that, I drink very little. I'm at the stage where about 3 pints of beer gets me feeling a little funny.

That's my "story" but I promise it's not fiction! Therefore, I'm not going to preach to anyone about the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption. So, Charlie, it's up to you really. Only you can decide what's best for you in the long run. But you need to prepared for the consequences! ;)

Charlie Brown

It's just striking a balance. My social life is quite hectic, I don't like missing out on things, so one set of mates will call one day and say 'ahh we're doing x y and z tonight, see you then', then the following day some other friends will call. It's never ending!

I need to start watching my weight before it catches up on me!

I always try not to eat late as night as I feel it just lies in the stomach and es not digest as well as the system slows down.

I don't necessarily eat heathly and weigh just over 13 stone for 5ft9. I could do with loosing a stone, but when I've been to the doctors, i've been told i've been in quite good health, but when i've gone to the Doctors, or hospital 2 questions are always asked in a tone that makes even me feel guilty, 1) do you smoke, and 2)do you drink. I confidently say NO to both not at all. I'm always telling my eldest to take it easy on the beer, but when your young it is just the done thing, what stopped me drinking 5 things 1) driving the next day, 2) feeling cr*p / sick etc 3) seeing everyone else make a total p**** of themselves, thinking that could be me and I might not even know it ( atleast sober I should know what i'm doing?). 5) the state of those who spent the night in the cells for DnD or assult and don't even remember a thing!

After a mad year or 2 I went onto the pop or LA larger (as a shandy) did I care no, I knew I'd be fit for work the next day, and never had to worry about when, if or how I got home. I was out everynight of the week, every week.

I'm sorry but I still can't see how Charlie can get through 50/55 pints a week?
I'm not a massive drinker myself and 4 or 5 pints of Cider is enough for me. but I am not saying I haven't been on the odd 'Leo Sayer' (All Dayer) in the past and drunk double that. I'm 5ft 10in and 15 stone (yes, overweight). I don't eat much but I know I eat at the wrong times but moving on, it's not about me.

I don't want to preach either but Charlie, your claim of drinking all of those pints is kind of coming across as if it's something to be proud of?
Reading your posts over the past year or so, it's clear as day (to me anyway) that this is where your problem is. When I first started seeing your posts when I joined up, you came across as someone who, although a bit silly at times...actually had a decent head on them. When I say that, I mean...You seemed like you were doing a decent job of making a DJ business work at a young age (yes, I know that sounds patronising...it's not meant to!).

Over the past year or so you have seemed like you aren't that bothered about it all, you've said you don't know what to do or whether you want to continue doing what you're doing and you've mentioned the gambling thing too. Now, you are talking about drinking loads aswell.

Thing is....I am sure at one point or another, we've ALL done something like this. In my opinion, if you don't try things, you don't learn anything. You're young and enjoying yourself and fair play but (and I doubt if I am the only one thinking it), you won't last long at all if you carry on like it, whether it's the gambling, booze or both.

Maybe it's the environment we all (you) work in and the fact that you don't drive either? Do you do gigs at the weekend and then go out on the lash straight after? Is DJing your only income now? If so, that will suffer sooner or later. You sound like you're winding things down anyway in the lead up to the cruise thing?
Maybe it's your mates who work day jobs and have weekends like other people that have day jobs and you have to play catch up when you meet up with them?

I know all of the above will sound out of order. People have tried to give you advice on a number of things in the past when you have posted. You've posted this now because you either genuinely want advice or you just want to (for want of a better word), brag about it? Two words spring to mind - 'Be Careful'.

Nope, it's nothing to be proud about and I know I drink too much, but like I've said, not intentionally. I don't have the mentality like some people 'I must go out and drink myself to oblivion' - it just happens that I go out a bit. If I'm honest, it doesn't effect me much. People at my old work used to call me the 18 year old that's like an old man. Occasionally, you won't even be able to tell I've had a drink......... that's why it's good to be crazy all the time. :D

I might have a dance & smoke a bit more, or if I've had a rubbish day go quiet and listen to music - but I'm not the type of person to turn aggressive or make a :muppet: of themselves.

I do finish gigs on a Saturday and go to a small bar in town that's open till 4.00am. I know the DJ in there and we have a reet out laugh, it's just a small chilled out affair.

My mates are all living the uni life and wouldn't surprise me if they drank the same. I think it's how (sadly) British culture is. I do like to meet up in the week or after DJ'ing, otherwise I wouldn't see them! Perhaps it sounds a lot to some people but growing up now at 18 is a lot different to how it used to be, I presume?

I won't be able to drink (hardly) on the ship, so need to reign myself in a bit. Not sure how long I'd be able to last without having a beer - after all, it's a good un winder and relaxes you?

P.S - I haven't gambled (apart from the lottery!) since December. I still go and drink in their because occasionally I enjoy watching the games. I was very tempted to have a flutter last night but opted for a cheese toastie instead - Doh!

It is important to me to not get fat so I am watching what I eat now.

I have had the problem where I spend lots of days working in bed as I now have a lodger.
If you get used to eating less you will loose weight - or not put it on. Just be conscious of what you stick in your mouth.
Best way to achieve this is only eat when hungry. Your appetite will get smaller over a few weeks.

Pate is very fattening so look at what you are eating such as fats and carbs (toast).
Most importantly do not eat late before bed as has been mentioned and do some exercise like walking/cycling/swimming.

I don't know if that's a reference to me or if you know somebody else with that incredibly common name. At your age (actually I was a little older 21 /22) I was drinking more than you say you are now. I won't go into details but I was out straight from work (4:30 / 5pm) every night until at least 11. 2 - 3 nights a week until 3am & Sundays 12 - 12. It was only when somebody showed me a leaflet that had a scale of how much was safe to drink & I saw I was actually considerably off the end that said something like stop drinking you will die, that I realised I had a problem (although I never missed a day's work).

Luckily I only came out of it with an increased tolerance to alcohol, although I could quite easily have become a full blown alcoholic & / or seriously damaged my internal organs or in a worse case scenario I could / should have died.

Listen to somebody who's been there, cut down on the booze (stay in more often if you have to, you'll save money too. Only have one or 2 drinks after work rather than 3 or 4), & eat healthily (cut out as much fried food as you can, if you want a full English, grill as much as possible, poach the eggs, it soon adds up) & at more sensible times. Have a breakfast when you get up. Force yourself if you have to the first few times you'll soon get used to it. Have 1 or 2 meals later in the day lunch & /or dinner, but cut out the late night food. If you must snack have a bowl of cherry tomatoes or grapes handy, if you feel the need for a snack, just pop a couple of toms or grapes.

It works, any time I've wanted to lose my gut, this is what I've done.

Try some excersise too, although I can't advise on this as I'm a lazy sod & don't do any myself (carting disco gear around at weekends seems to do for me, but then, I'm not trying to lose weight)

Cut down on chocolate / sweets (if you eat any) too

From June 2008 to Jan 2010 I lost over 12 stone following Weight Watchers.

There are lots of ways to go about it, however the secret is always the same....

Persistence.

EDIT: Just read through most of this thread and noticed about the drinking, you will definitely need to address this first else you won't get anywhere with changing the way you look.

55 pints a week??? Lol.

As with anything in life Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.

That is some drinking habit.

I too doubt you are downing 50+ pinks a week Charlie but if you are heres the maths.

Just worked out that 10 pints in one night is 23 Units (We should not exceed 3-4 on a daily basis)

Thats 1704 cals the same as eating 5 burgers.
That will take a 170 minute run to burn that off.

Now times that by going out 5 nights a week.

23 x 5 = 115 Units
1704 x 5 = 8520

You would have to spend 850 (4 Hours+) minutes running a day to burn that lot off and also take into account the damaging effect this must be having on your liver.

Quite shocking info isn't it

A set of bathroom scales from Tesco costs about £5. Weigh yourself every morning. If your weight is going up eat and drink less and/or exercise more.

Nah, I have some scales. For quite a few months now, it's sticking at 11 & half stone.

Chatting to Dad last night, I might notice a difference if I didn't drink for a month.

After this weekend (bit of a hectic one) I'm going to try it, see if I have the will power!

I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks for all your help.

Dont know why people are saying hes not drinkingt that. Its do-able....

When I was 18 I was DJing in a pub 4 nights a week (Thurs-Sun) and getting free beer as a perk of the job... There were 2 of us DJing and we could easily pack away 10 pints a night each...so theres my 40 pints...plus i had rugby on the Tuesday which often finished in the clubhouse...another fair few pints.

On the flip of the coin...im now working to loose 5 stone

Its a case of watching what your eating and making sure that you have a calorie deficit by doing exercise. I do 1000 calorie burn a day at the gym, which takes about an hour on cardio gear.

How tall are you? 11.5 stone doesn't sound overweight at all. I'm around 12 stone and am pretty slim.

Have you calculated your BMI? Enter your details here (http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/)

Using a bit of trial and error I worked out roughly you'd need to be shorter than 5" 7" in order to be in the overweight category. (Which I don't think you are), My BMI is 21.6

It seems you eat fairly healthily so your only problem is the booze.

Having met Charlie at BPM last year, I'm 5'8 and he's shorter than me (I was expecting a big lad from the videos and pics he'd posted on here!!).

As for the BMI calc, well, I'm in the 30+ category. And I've a long, long way to go!! :(

Actually, we've done the BMI thing on here before and it was a pretty interesting thread!

The BMI is only a very rough guide and is useless if you have a lot of muscle. Johnny Wilkinson, David Haye etc are all obese according to their BMI.

Charlie - Assuming you're 5" 8' as Dazzy said. Your BMI is 24.5 This puts you in the top end of "Normal weight" I.e. at the moment you're fine, but you need to be careful.

EDIT: Missed the last pat of you're post. I may have to try and dig that one up!

Yeah, don't eat sweets or chocolate. Love cheese though, like love it.

My BMI is 25. When I had my medical for the ship, the doctor called me overweight borderline obese?

24.1 is certainly not obese.

It seems you've edited your post now to 25?

Sorry, 25. Just checked again on the scales and it's nearly 12 stone. It does fluctuate.

Shortly, I'm meant to be taking Grandad down to his local (get him out a bit) I'll see what else I can drink that isn't beer!

A bottle of J20 contains a similar amount of calories (132) as a bottle of medium strength lager

Really? Surely a fruity J20 is better on the belly than a beer?

I don't know thats what I was asking, so a J20 is really as bad for your health as a beer?

No, that's not right, as it probably has a slightly better nutritional value, but it does have as many calories!

Well we're doing good. Cut out the late night snacking etc.

The biggest and most impressive thing for me is the booze. It's been a lot harder than I anticipated (picked up tons of advice from my GP & a place in town) but I've cut down the drinking massively. One week, I didn't touch it for six days. Feel a lot better within myself and the moobs are slowly dying! I'm surprised at how much money I've saved too, that capital one & Barclaycard balance is slowly going down.

I am looking forward to my first pint of the week though tomorrow with Mr Ford.

It's been a while since Charlie B has been on the forum mind, Theo. It might be a while before he replies. I don't know if he's still on the boats or not.

Based on Facebook, I think he went back on the boats after a brief stint in the UK. I think he saw that he had one or two PT sessions though before he went ;)

Not bad.

I told him going on cruise ships would make him loose weight
- or was it something else, can't remember now :p

I need to address my figure before its too late. Its all too easy to get used to married life and all that and neglect your health.

My four step regime is going to be:

1: eat less, don't eat unhealthy foods / drink in moderation.
2: get out more, even if its a walk to the shops / cycle round the block (once a day)
3: do some cardio once a week - I like the fitness classes 95-100% women and most of them HOT!
4: drink lots of water and regular meals.

Think healthy as that also has a lot to do with your physical wellbeing (apparently).

Job done. :)
