View Full Version : Just what is the definition of a 'Rock' track

Murrough

With all this talk of Indie music, bands, Air Guitar etc , can someone tell me how they define what a 'Rock' track is today.

In the 80's it was Rainbow, but they were Heavey Metal then, but we call them Rock now.

SO what is a Rock track, we can all name a track and instantly say 'yeah thats Rock' but whats the difference between Rock and Indie

but whats the difference between Rock and IndieVery leading question, since it's even 'Indie Rock'!

I'd say if it's guitar based, then it will fall into the 'Rock' category...... but there are hundreds of sub-categories, and that's where it REALLY gets confusing!!! :omg:

Indie is to Rock as Techno is to Dance/Club...

Does that make things any clearer?? :D:D:D

This is what it says on the net...

"Type of popular dance music originating in the 1950s, characterized by a heavy beat and simple melodies, often with a blues element. Based on the pentatonic scales in progressions."

All wrapped up then!

I love my rock guys but it just not the same as the good old stuff, will say rock has got very mellow these days very few fast hard tracks seem to chart like say rainbow or Iron maiden styled tracks. I would almost bung most indie rock bands under the title of British soft rock these days

If you are talking in terms of definitions, the genre 'Rock' is the equivalent of 1 divided by 0.

You cannot define 1 divided by 0 - it's mathematical talk :D

...and Rudebox is atrocious! Fair enough he's trying to do something different, and it was either gonna be really good or really bad - David Bowie is a prime example of this

Hey all,

Thought you was talking about 'rock'. Anyway, what about indie, Somehow cant seem to fit that into a slot. To me its non descript!

Another question, has anyone had to play HipHop all night. Drives you mad, so used the ear muffs all night lol lol.

Come to that, this doesn't have any relevance either.

Relevance disappears from all threads when one ingredient is added!
