Hi all, I have had a media company offering to buy my domain name as there is a company of the same name trading who have a .com address while I have the co.uk one. Anyway, how do you put a value on this sort of thing as the media company is asking what I would accept for an opening offer.
I know I need to bear in mind replacing promotional materials etc. and also a potential loss of business going forward.

If the company is a big company, and they mean it. Charge a lot.

If they want it, they'll pay it.

A domain name is almost impossible to give a price for.

Its worth what someone is willing to pay for it under my understanding. Need a new van?

Why would a company from Puerto Rico want a .co.uk domain name?

Doesn't make any sense at all to me.

As for the "if it's a big company, charge lots" advice, well, judging by the website I don't think they have an awful lot of money to spare!!!

I don't think having to rebrand is worth the bother in this case. I'd give this offer a miss if I were you.

How do you know what the company is?

And you say you'd give it a miss, what if someone offered you £100,000?

You dont know if it's worth the 'bother' until you know how much they will pay, surely.

Because I've done some research in to the company. It's not rocket science!!

They are a "Party Bus" hire company (looks like they've only got 2 buses - and one is an old school-type bus painted pink!!) in Peurto Rico which makes me wonder why they want a .co.uk domain name. The website is not custom made (it's along the lines of a moonfruit template - so it's very cheap!). Oh, and the comments page is all spam so it's obviously not got a very good webmaster appointed to look after it - which any company worth it's salt should really be doing. Even the gallery, which should really be promoting their buses, seems to show more pictures of hundreds of people partying in a club somewhere. It doesn't scream "multi-million" pound (or whatever the Peurto Rican equivalent is!) business to me.

If someone in South America offered me £100,000 to buy my .co.uk web domain it would go straight in "trash" along with all the other emails from Nigerian Generals and long lost "family" members!!! Besides, very few businesses would be willing to pay anywhere near that figure for a domain name - especially one not relevant to their geographical location. It's like me buying the .au equivalent to one of my websites. It's simply not worth it and I can't see how any reputable, successful business would think otherwise - unless they're going for world domination with their two buses!!! (see, Shaun's pic may be right after all!!!)

I suppose at least they do have two buses as not just a couple o fiestas!

Just to clarify that the company concerned is not the party bus service mentioned above but a major high street name.

Well, that's thrown a spanner in the works!!

And, of course, you did state it was a "media" company.

To be honest, only you can put a value on the sale of your branding. If you're website is only getting the odd hit here and there then it might not be too costly should you sell it. If it gets hundreds/thousands of hits, and you do a lot of business off it, then that's another matter. But you need to assess what it's worth to you, what it's worth to the potential buyer and then try and find some common ground.

Here's a decent article on the subject:
