Who do people book large halls that can cater for 150 - 200 people when there are only intending to invite 50 - 80 guests. It makes it very differcult to create any kind of atmosphere when there is so much emptiness.

Usually because

a) they're cheap

and

b) they're available on the required date

I do know where you're coming from but, like Martin said, these are often cheap WMC-type of function rooms and they may be the only local venues available. I'm trying to think locally and the only venues that would cater for a max of 80 people would be a couple of smaller pubs in town. And I think, knowing these venues, they might struggle to get a decent DJ to perform in said venues. My opinion, of course, but the two venues that sprang to mind first are ones that I would be very reluctant to work in myself.

For my own engagement party, we booked a 150-capacity venue and invited about 110 guests. However, due to poor timings (on our part when organising the damn thing!) we only got about 60 guests turn up so it made the room look pretty empty. Wasn't too bad a night though (except the DJ played the "the buffet is now available - but please avoid the sausage rolls" jingle - and my ex was really peeved as she'd spent half the day making the sausage rolls herself!! :eek: ). So, guests not turning up could always be a factor, too.

Luckily, we are spoilt for choice in my area for halls, big and small, I can think of at least 20 -30 venues within a 5 mile radius, but they all seem to go for the (cheaper) bigger hall.
I just don't think they take it into consideration regarding the size of hall and amount of guests.

And to make maters worse they then position the tables in the corners and around the edges which makes the hall seem much bigger and isolating guests.

Sounds like you could benefit from selling your party planning services ;)

(or at the very least, write up a "how-to" guide plastered with your own advertising and offer it to potential clients as a freebie)

Maybe it's because there aren't many venues to choose from?

We're very limited here for venues (I know because I've done them all) and most of them cater for parties of 150 - 200.
