I bought 8 mega tri par profiles yesterday and I'm really pleased with the colours and brightness. What I can't seem to achieve is setting them up in master/slave mode using either the handheld rc remote or via onboard menu.

According to the manual the first unit in the chain is the master and when connected the other units become slaves, without changing any settings on the slave units. I must be missing something completely obvious as I can't get the slave unit to do the same as the master, I've tried different dmx cables.....help!

Rather than create a separate thread for such a similar query can I also ask about setting up master/slave? I got the ADJ Mega Par Profile lights today and, despite reading the manual and having a good look around on the internet, I can't get more than one light (the "master") to work. The lights came with four DMX cables. I have one DMX cable going from the DMX Out connector on the master and this is connected to the DMX In on the next light and so on for the next two lights in the chain. The only light that is plugged in is the master; do I need a female to male power lead to go from speaker to speak as well? Surely all the lights don't have to be plugged in to a power source?

If I understand you correctly, are you asking if the power cables have to be daisy chained as well as the DMX? If so, no, but they do all need power, whether daisy chained or run individually from a seperate power feed.

Sorry, I meant light to light not speaker to speaker. So, thanks for understanding what I meant!

So each light does need to be individually powered then? What a pain in the proverbial. More leads. Each light does come with a power lead so there's no extra expense involved. But I imagine I'd need one of these? http://www.djanddiscostuff.com/dj-consumables-c92/power-leads-and-extensions-c128/phase-one-3-way-iec-mains-lead-with-surge-protection-p415

Yes, or just a standard 4-way extension cable.

All units will require their own power.

I'd go for something like these (http://cpc.farnell.com/pro-elec/pe00057/lead-iec-plug-to-iec-socket-1m/dp/PL09621?in_merch=Featured Products)
They're not too flexible, but they're cheap, reliable, and available in various lengths. Then just daisy chain your lights.

Blimey, they are cheap. Thanks very much, fella.

Did you not see what it says as my location? I try not to do expensive, or even reassuringly expensive. :D:D

Just watch out for the delivery charge from CPC. Unless you spend forty five quid ( before vat ), or catch the occasions when this charge is waived, you'll get a six quid charge.

Thanks, Excalibur. Even with the six quid charge, those leads are still cheaper than elsewhere.

I'm going to get a T-bar for the lights. Again, there seems to be quite a difference in price between the T-bars that Maplin sell and the official American DJ T-bar. Will any old T-bar do or do I have to get the American DJ one?

If you're just wanting a T-Bar for the lights you described earlier, then they're not that heavy so pretty much any stand will do (at first!!). Some of the cheaper stands tend to use cheaper, softer metal in their construction and the poles can get dinted easily which can cause a problem when trying to extend/shorten the main stand poles as they can get jammed. They'll be ok at first but can wear quickly with use.

I use different stands but the Adam Hall ones tend to be the strongest and most damage-resistant.

Half price, same badge (http://www.djtechdirect.com/american-dj-lts-6-lighting-stand.html#!prettyPhoto)
I have no idea of its weight rating, nor the seller, but have a Google, and see what comes up. The Maplins stands are not of the highest quality, although I've got many well used and reliable old ones.

As a general rule, cost increases with weight rating and quality. The Ultimax ones range from £60 for a 20Kg one, to £130 for a 50Kg one. They're in CPC by the way, so you could save your £6 easily. :D

I would go with that--I have had an Adam Hall Steel T bar for many years that supports some very heavy old PAR Lights I use and its bullet proof.

I would be tempted to go with an established make like Adam Hall or others, pay a bit more and get the quality--so many things these days are thinner and less well made (but cheaper of course)

Thanks, all. Just off to take the kids for their weekly swim (such is the life of a rock 'n' roll star, eh?) so will be making some sort of purchase this afternoon based on all your help and advice.

Okay, another day another stupid question from yours truly:D

When I get the T-bar, where do I put it? (Clean answers only, please!) See, I was going to put it behind and above me but the received wisdom seems to be that the T-bar should be situated somewhere in front of me - not often possible at pub gigs (in fact, there's only one venue where I can actually do this). If I position the T-bar behind me and angle the lights so they shine a short distance in front of me, around where I put the floor monitor, would that work?

90% of the time I just put the t-bar behind me.

Thanks, Shaun. I'm probably worrying too much before I've even tried it out but lighting is a new aspect of performance for me so apologies if it all seems like so much hand-wringing.

If its going behind you a lot on stage I would buy a fairly heavy duty one so its not easily knocked if you happen to stand back and as you will have to whack it up to a fair old height so its above you again a solid construction will help prevent it easily moving--I have to do this with my heavy old PARs and I am glad I have a solid old Adam Hall stand--:D

Thanks. I've just taken delivery of a stand from a company called Ekho. Never heard of them before but I was encouraged by the description of the stand, that it was made of reinforced steel and European-made. I've just got it out of the box and it weighs like a mother! Very reassuring because once those lights are up I want them to stay there.

Is there any way to put the lights into slave/master mode without using the remote control? Every time I use the remote, it's touch and go as to which light will go into 'slave' mode - is there a way of programming them into slave mode on the back of the lights?

I have found that I set the lights up one at a time at home and set one to master and label it so that you know which one it is.

I then use the setting on the slave ones which deactivates the ir for the remote, then only the master will work with the remote.

Not sure if this is what you mean and/or whether this helps you.

Thanks, teenybops (and yes that was what I meant!).

I'll try that method out - it sounds like the perfect solution to my problems - and post the outcome.

Thanks again.

Right, off to the first Christmas gig of the year now. Wish me luck!
