Hey

I've got my first official dance/disco coming up at the end of this month (I've done parties before for friends etc, but this is first to a 'customer') and I've just had a delivery today with the lights (everything else I've had for few months).

Had it all looking great in my mind:

[] ( ) { } ( ) []

(all across a Truss Bar)

[] = ADJ Mega Par LED Can

( ) = Chauvet Comet LED

{ } = Acme Venom

Intention was plenty of wide wash beams flickering around, and then set off with the mushroom effect of the Comet's.

I had heard that the Comet's 'sound activation' is not sensitive enough, but I figured that'd be fine as the music will be loud. What I hadn't expected, is that it is not triggered by 'sound' but 'bass'. When the song is going through an intro or a breakdown in the middle (where the bass cuts out) the lights stand still. In that situation, there are just plain lights - flashing (Mega Par Can's) but no movement.. until the bass comes back.

I fear this is going to look plain!

Additionally, one of the Comet's mic is really poor, and I have to tap the mic part itself for it to pic up sound and spin! I'll have to sort that out with the retailer tomorrow.. but I wonder if that is a typical problem (and if so, is there a simple solution?)

So what do you think? Have I just messed up? There's no way I could convince my wife to let me spend more money... haha.

To be honest lighting is a personal thing and quite often it's the Dj that gets bored with the selection.

You will be fine - and as the gigs come in you will be able to starting adding new effects.

I have never had one customer complain about my lights and I change them often to avoid my boredom.

Congratulations on your first commercial gig.

Don't stress it with lights. If they flash from time to time, job's a good 'un.

The only people who agonise over lighting are DJs, not punters. It's taken me four or five years to get lighting I'm really happy with, and I've basically got an LED version of what I used twenty or thirty years ago!!

What you have is fine for starters, you'll be able to tweak it as you go along. Concentrate on the music, and keeping punters happy, and you're 99% there.

Sounds like some good advice, thanks.

Perhaps I've been looking at them with my DJ hat on. :)
