DJ's getting even cheaper

I took a booking for a 3 hour teenage birthday 3 days ago, quoting a sensible price for a wednesday evening.

While waiting on the booking form to be completed by the client, i got an email saying that he was cancelling the booking, as the 'venue can supply a DJ for £10 per hour' :eek:

I was getting more than that 20 years ago

In my experience all "trades" are working for cheaper than they have in the past, times are hard, I have friends who are builders, sparks, plumbers and they are all going out "for wages".
Quote a price and someone will undercut you, quaranteed. There are more sixty quid sids than ever and more people looking for the cheapest quote :(

With our PAT testing company we find this also, we charge £1.60 per item and had a phone call from a client yesterday trying to beat a price she had been quoted of £0.40p an item!

Trick is to be way more expensive and then just get the good ones :)

Chances are the undercutters have no insurance no PAT test,don't pat tax etc. It's time some sort of licence came into force to stop these cowboys who only give the rest of us a bad name

I don't charge high prices on my childrens parties, not because I am a "cowboy" or anything of the like, I have only just started out, want people to start booking me and I am doing it for fun more then anything else. I have just finished 6th Form, it gives me something (that I enjoy doing) to do, especially as I do alot of theatre work as thats always been a main ambition of mine.

Overall its a bit of extra money for me, Im being an entertainer for children, which I love doing and I have only just started out, so need to hopefully build up a client base.

I couldn't even PAT test my own stuff for that, cost of labels, recalibration, shoe leather!

Which is fine until you realise that it's probably costing you more than you earn, so don't get caught in the trap.

I do a regular 'charity' gig to keep the kids out of trouble, which just about covers the cost of buying the awful music they are into :D ... but I live in a village and this is my way of helping out without losing money.

Everything else is priced properly with an appropriate discount for 'mates rates' because I can take the missus and have a night out at the same time. I don't do a great deal of these though.

Mmmmm, chap in my area offering gigs from £100...I don't try to compete, pointless. I charge a fair price for a good service, not sure of the clients I would attract at £100 ....

In my area we have a young couple advertising Parties from £50-£80 and for a Wedding its a mighty £90!!

They have lots of photos of their lights in action with very thick smoke but never any pictures of anyone dancing??!

There Facebook page is full of enquirys though!! I have had quite a few people tell me that im too expensive and they can get a DJ for under £80!
