Corporate Customers

I have a meeting today with a corporate customer regarding the function that I am doing for them next week.
We have had communication via email and phone and it's been mentioned already that there may well be additional bookings in the future. I guess it's dependent on how this one goes.
When I have pre-function meetings, I usually go dressed smartly, clean shaven etc to create the right impression. Shirt, trousers etc...

Do you treat a corporate customer the same as you would anyone else?

Do you think it's over the top to wear a suit?
I personally think the shirt and trousers thing is enough but what about you?

I'd be interested to know your thoughts.

Suit is not over the top, but merely adding a tie to a smart casual* outfit may be equally acceptable for this.

If you're having the meeting at their offices, then a suit may easily be the default setting.

If it's at the venue, or neutral ground then dress codes may be less stringent.







* Smart casual does not mean clean t shirt and jeans with no rips in. ;)

I wear a suit (without tie) to all meetings anyway. For corporate it is also important to appreciate their business. A group of solicitors or a group of builders ?? Both have very different takes and was last year asked to dress very casually (polo top and trousers I wore) by one corporate client - happened to be a national plumbers merchant.

For me personally, I prefer the suit for meeting in the first instance, but don't wear a tie to not seem too formal.

Edit : I know you are not stupid but take the 'more work' with a pinch of salt. Around 25% of my work is corporate and most use me for one off events (apart from plumbers merchant above who have now had over 20)
