I have an old midi file that I am trying to play through Adobe Audition CS3 but not having much luck.It seems as though it's not reading the data properly and just coming up as rubbish.

I have downloaded Anvil Studio which does play all the midi tracks in the right order and in time but the sounds are pretty poor.

I have gone through the right process with Adobe Audition:
Multitrack/Insert Midi.

It offers 3 plugin options and I have tried them all and it's all complete dross.

I've come to the conclusion that the midi file is ok otherwise it wouldn't play through Anvil Studio(It also plays through windows media player)

Just can't figure out how to configure Audition.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Not used Audition but, some midi files are saved as the individual channels and some are 'grouped' so only one channel appears to have been used but all the instruments are still actually individual.
(I've probably used completely the wrong terminology but I have used midi files for 20+ years!)
Anyway, is there anything in the settings / preferences that selects what kind of midi file you're opening? Sorry I can't be any more help than that but it might get you in the right direction.
