Headphones. Is it just me?

Hi Guys

I constantly seem to be having to replace my headphones. The main problem is the very thin lead from the phones to the jack. I just think it is way way too thin to be used by a mobile DJ.
The ones I am using at the moment are Senheisser HD205 (if I remember). Not the most expensive phones, but a good quality name.
I keep them plugged in and stored in my MC6000 flight case (so they are not getting thrown about a lot).

The cable was damaged either when I dropped them and they were caught by the cable, or when I tugged the headphones when they got caught on something.

How does everone else get on? Is the cable on your headphones very thin? Or have you found a pair with heavier cable? Got a link?

What I have done for a couple of mates is to cut the original cable a few inches from the headphones and fit a 3.5mm jack socket.

This is then hot glued to the headphones and further reinforced by adhesive lined heatshrink.

Then use a 3.5 to 3.5 or 3.5 to 6.3 stereo jack to jack lead.

if you snag the lead it just pulls out with no damage. If the lead goes faulty you just plug a new lead in :)

Thanks for that. I think it is too late for mine. The cable seems to have broken near or inside the cup. I am going to see if it is possible to get a heavier cable fitted???

I had my Sony ones for years but now use a pair of ADJ ones (can't remember the model number although I have posted it on the forum before). The cable is quite tough and I've had no problems with it.... so far! Got them from Disco World in Hartlepool for a decent price, too! :)

Like you I use the Senheisser HD205 , the lead is a bit on the thin side , my problem is the lead seems to wrap around one or both the thumb screws on the ultimax stand , so far the lead has held up , but it dont half give you a shock when the headphones are caught up and you try to move around.....:D , lost count of the times my glasses have been ripped off , only to fall in the darkest, most in assessable place you could find..

You are looking at about £150+ though.

Hi Daryll. The lead on mine (which is very very long!) is always getting caught on something! I have just taken mine in to my friendly TV repair man, who will hopefully be able to sort for me. Although he wasn't keen on adding a thicker lead on.

Thanks for that. I wouldn't have too much of a problem paying that sort of money if I thought they would last. It might be me, I just seem to go through a lot of pairs of headphones and it is always the cable!!

I use Bayer DT770's i bought these for radio work but lately have been using them for Mobile DJ stuff as well. There built like a tank, sound great and are very comfy to wear. Only downside is there slightly on the large side but i am used to that now, again there slightly on the pricey side at around £120 but worth it.

I think Sony have now replaced them with a new model but they still come in at under £100 and if you are just using them a couple of times a week they should last you years

I use Sennheiser HD25s too. The only thing I've had to replace is the pads over the ears. Everything is replaceable on them.

Have you seen the price of them :eek: Only joking. So can you replace the lead as well? Is the lead pretty sturdy?

Bought a pair of American DJ ones at BPM last year ..... still going strong , personally always bought cheapish ones , just treat them as a consumable.

The lead seems sturdy enough, I've never had any issue with them. I've heard many people say that the HD25's seem flimsy, especially if you're used to bulkier headphones, but for gigging nothing else comes close for me personally.

For mixing at home I use set of ariel7's. I tried out every pair of headphones on offer at the BPM show last year and nothing came close to the ariel7's. The bass response is outstanding, and like the Sennheiser you can crank them up LOUD without any distortion. At half the price of the Senny's it's definitely worth considering.

Yep, Its coiled sprung so nice and short but you can move about if needed.
Have tried the sennheisers but the Sonys have always been my favorite for comfort and sound quality

Sennheiser HD215 are the headphones I use ive had them for nearly five years and they have been faultless and solid. I like my sennheiser gear. Even use them for my wired and radio mics and theyre great i find.

I use the same headphones as you (HD205) and have had them for over 6 years and still going strong. I gently fold the cable round in a loose loop and pack them in the soft case they come with.

When I'm using them I take the excessive cable and wrap it around the right hand side protruding edge of the deckstand, then a small piece of electrical or gaffer tape to stop it unwinding. Works fine for me. The cable does seem unnecessarily long though but I suppose better to be too long than too short :)

I'm on my 3rd pair of Citronic HP500 headphones in about 10 years. These have a detachable lead with a 3.5mm jack on each end and a lockable connection to the phones themselves. If you bugger up the lead, simply buy a new one and replace it.

+1 - I've been using the same pair of these for 3yrs without any issue at all. As Darren says the only downside is the price, but the build and sound quality are well worth the money.

A replacement cable would be £40+ though if I ever did manage to break it!

Just to let everyone know that I have just got my pair back from my TV reapir man :) (it cost me a tenner!) But working fine now and I will have to be more carefull in future.
Someone on this thread suggested looping the cable round the cup to stop it from pulling at the connection where it goes in to the cup. I will give that a go.
