Anyone else bored of the olympic build up?

Im really looking forward to watching some of the sport during the olypmics, but im really fed up with all the build up.

For weeks most of the news has revolved around it. I put the bbc news channel on at 9am today, hoping to get 'the news', 25 minutes later ive heard nothing but olympics.

Glad im working tonight, so i dont have to sit through the opening ceromony

Actually quite enjoying it- went down to pretty much the end of our road today to see it go past on the Thames- all pretty cool.
Suspect the sport may be a bit of an anticlimax after the Torch Relay but we will wait and see.

By all accounts the opening ceremony is very good and well worth watching.
As for the sport side of it there seems to be something for everyone - i for one didn't realize how varied the Olympics is beyond the usual bits to see not he tv coverage.
was dreading it but kind of looking forward to it in a way - i live a 10m cycle ride to box hill so will be there to see that if i get back form this tour in time!

I'm not really that bothered about Olympic footy either, prefer to watch Usain Bolt track events and also I'll be on the look out for Ashley McKenzie in the 60kg Judo after watching the documentary of him the other night.

If the torch had passed outside my house I would have gone out and taken a look (but it didn't), other than that, to date it's been more boring than watching paint dry, I will be watching some of the events when they get underway, assuming I have nothing better to do.

Are you forgetting about the Tier 1 sponsors at the games like McDonalds, Coca Cola, BMW etc who have put millions and millions of pounds into the games.

Unless you know the ins and outs of the financial side and who has paid for what you really shouldn't be mentioning figures and moaning.

The media aren't always right though are they. Unless people have got the correct securiy license (door supervisor for your information) then they cannot work on the Park.

Who have been running it all around the country,thro towns and villages,the ordinary man/woman in the street.But when it comes to a prestigious venue/street/location who is it?Certainly not the man/woman in the street,it's a so called 'celeb'-Forsyth,Redgrave,Brooking,Holmes.The vey people who will probably get complimentary seats to all the prestigious events that everyone else had to enter into a ballot in the hope they might get lucky and if they did it would be at some considerable cost.

Im providing music for a pub tonight showing the opening ceremony and am looking forward to it. If anything it will hopefully encourage a good turn out and give me an opportunity to promote myself to locals as I don't do pub gigs generally.

They have an xbox kinect set up with the Olympics games, Olympic themed drinks deals and will be showing the ceremony throughout... not sure how much Djing I will be doing as I think the final torch is lit at midnight right?

Still get on the mic and interact with the guests etc should be fun.

The folks that carried the torch in my local town (well, it's a city now!!) were certainly not celebrities. They were local folk who'd been nominated for making a difference to their communities.

I'm quite possibly the most olympic-sceptic person you could imagine but, I'm also a dad of three young kids who wanted to see the torch that they had been learning about at school so I took them along to see it (in the rain - it is Sunderland, of course!). You couldn't deny there was a fantastic atmosphere from the folk who turned out to see it. The highlight, for me, was when a Metropolitan Police motorcyclist pulled up right in front of me and put his hand out. I thought he was going to tell me to stop taking photos of the police but, instead, he bent down to my three year old son and said "High 5!". My son high-5'd him and then he did the same with my other son and daughter. Given the bad press that members of the police force get in today's society, I thought this was a brilliant touch.

Oh, and the torch relay parade wasn't bad, either!! ;)

Rather than start another thread,if it's ok I will post on here regarding the opening ceremony.
It was very British.I dont think the opening 'period' segment would have been appreciated by many outside of Britain;I certainly didnt enjoy that particular part.The NHS was very well done and looked very good.Not too impressed with the dancers in the modern sequence.They seemed to get lost in the vastness of the whole thing and it did rely to heavily on the TV with the girl/boy storyline.The guys on the bikes with the wings was very impressive too.
The James Bond idea was quite funny and fair play to the Queen for going along with it.I quite liked the Arctic Monkeys but definately not Paul Macartney.
A very smug looking David Beckham was a little irritating.
The highlight for me was undoubtedly the lighting of the Olympic flame.It really was inspirational and a feat of engineering genius.Absolutely stunning.

I think its safe to say that was amazing. It goes to show no matter where in the globe you are there are english techs working on almost every large event, festival and tour. We are know for our work ethics and skill and creative flare and last night shows exactly that - we are the best.
Other countries do fantastic things and have proved it in their opening ceremonies but what happened last night was a triumph and an unbelievable feat of skill, dedication and infrastructures and planning.

It has been a brilliant fortnight.The sport has been sensational and I am not ashamed to say it has bought tears to my eyes just to see the joy on the faces of the winners.
I am not to happy with the way it has been presented on TV but with 24 channels it was always going to be difficult.There seemed to be a lot of prolonged silences and important interviews were sadly missed.
As for Colin Jackson and Denise Lewis?What on earth did they contribute to anything.
But overall I think we definately delivered.
The venues looked stunning and the organisation looked extremely well managed.
To top it all our sports men and women have excelled themselves.
But it has all come at a very high cost!!!

Given the fact that that bit wasn't actually supposed to be broadcast, as he was not there to commentate, who cares‽

Colin & Denise are both highly relevant to British athletics & they are being employed by the British Broadcasting Corporation to comment on British television about an event being held in Britain.

Regarding the good start / bad start, have you never had a difference of opinion on something based on perspective? It may well have looked like a good start from the position he was at / on his monitor, whereas the athlete concerned may well have considered it a bad start based on how he felt / what was going on around him. Athletes tend to be overly critical of their own performances anyway.

Besides, the vast majority of people watching won't be avid athletics fans & (like me) are more likely to know who Colin Jackson & Denise Lewis are than some random American who (OK, I googled him) was at his peak (like Jackson) over a decade ago.

Jackson & Lewis both work regularly for the BBC (as does Johnson apparently) in the position they fill at the Olympics, so somebody must think they do an OK job.

The Ancient Olympics originated in Olympia in Greece and was always held there. Apparently only Greek speaking men were allowed and the competed nude. I've been to Olympia and walked the 'track'. Very interesting tour.

They've stayed with athletics, all that's changed is they now talk about it rather than competing in it. TBH I think they're lucky. How many sportsmen end up running pubs / resturants or like Alex Higgins? At least they can stay with the sport they love.

I watched the individual and team events in the synchronised rhythmic gymnastics and that really was excellent.In fact it took me by surprise just how good it really was.

Talking about the Paralympics. I think it's a disgrace that it's pretty much billed as a second rate event. Personally the paralysis should enjoy the same opening and closing ceremony of the main Olympics....that would do the Paralympians justice!
