Driving to gig to setup this morning and...

The gear box packed in on the van. I had to drive 3 miles stuck in 3rd gear but I made it to the venue.

Now the work begins trying to find a hire van for tomorrows gig. :Censored:

Sorry to hear of your trouble Shaun. I hope you find a van to hire and can get yours repaired next week. Sounds like a 2nd hand gearbox needed or rebuilding the faulty one. Not cheap.

Thanks everyone.

I won't risk driving it. I almost burnt out the clutch driving it along in 3rd. En-route was some steep inclines where I had to stop at traffic lights and pull away up a hill in 3rd gear - not good at all!! Luckily the gig is local(ish) tonight. I've arranged to leave the gear in the venue overnight locked in their utility room. I'll pick it up tomorrow when I get hold of a van. All the local hire places don't have one available but luckily I've contacted a mate who has one and he's kindly letting me borrow it.


Then the bill for repairing it is still to come. OUCH!

I seem to remember he's one of the Vivaro/Renault Master/Datsun clones. Let's hope it's something simple like that.

Meanwhile, I'm hitting the abacus hard, working out my total costs, in order to quote for a run from Yorkshire to Fife and back, at thirty miles to the gallon, and diesel nearly £1.40 per litre. :D :D

If it is a vivaro, traffic or primastar they are very prone for the linkage popping off at the gearbox, a quick fix is to put a bit of rubber glove over the ball before shoving the linkage back on.. easy get you home fix. You will know if it has come off as the gear lever would have went floppy!
If the lever is solid as if it is stuck in third the likelyhood is internal gearbox failure... not cheap I am afraid.

It's a vivaro, and the problem is just as described....a floppy gear stick.

Not brilliant...but at least it got stuck in 3rd. Any other gear and you would have been more screwed.

Thats a good price. I had to have the gear linkage cables replaced on my Galaxy about 3 years ago and it cost me £184 :(

I had this exact same thing happen on a fairly regular basis when i owned a renault trafic.

After the AA man came out first time and showed me hot to fix it, i would just pull over and stick my head under the bonnet to snap the cable thing back into place when it came off (maybe twice a month or so).

In the end, I secured it on using cable ties!

AA man said it wasn't a big job to get replaced but as he showed me how easy it was to fix i never bothered.

DJ Davy, you were right. It was the gear linkage. The RAC came out, found the problem and did a quick repair and followed me down to the my local garage, where it was fixed today. Cost just over £200 to fix, which included a few other little things needing done too (coroded sensor for reverse light and a faulty indicater).

All in all....could have been a LOT worse. :)

Yep.. Could have burned the clutch out! I am glad you got it fixed, shame you are at the wrong end of the country or I would have fixed it for you. Did they replace the one cable, or both?

I definitely didn't do the clutch any favours. A horrible smell of burning clutch at the end of the journey when it happened. Seems to be ok though.

Sometimes it's surprising what they will tolerate. I was sure I'd cooked the one in my previous van, yet when I changed it, the thing looked fine. Last week the clutch in this one suffered some terrible abuse, and presently I'm riding round with the smell of burning in my nostrils!

Already tried them Gary, they were more expensive than my current renewal quote.

I ended up going with 'autonetinsurance' They beat all my quotes and offered me protection on my no claims bonus.

Auto net quoted me mega! I have a new transit and shopped around. Highest quote was £3500, they told me it is because I am employed in the two highest risk professions. I managed to get it insured for £565 through budget van insurance, although swinton quoted £750.

I once had to drive all the way from Stansted airport back home (150 miles) with no clutch. Got the RAC out and they said towing me that distance would be too expensive so he advised me to start it in 3rd, ram in into 5th and keep moving. Easier said than done lol

The clutch in my Citreon now is on its way out because its started to slip ever so slightly. £370 quote to replace the clutch discs. Seen a kit for £100 and thinking about replacing it my self on the driveway.
