A Variety of bookings.

When I first started DJing full time for a mate a few years back, I must admit that I wasn't keen on DJing at Weddings. I think it made me nervous at the time knowing it was a special event and had to be handled correctly etc etc...

Now, the majority of my bookings are for Weddings. I don't class myself or advertise myself as a Wedding specialist but I reckon I do around 35 Weddings a year which isn't bad at all really for me. Obviously there are lots of other functions too as I doubt it very much if I would continiue doing what I do if I only had those.

I was looking at my diary and I noticed that I have variety of bookings coming up and I think that's a good thing because it keeps up the enthusiasm for the job. I know every booking, even if it is a Wedding, is different but just thought I'd mention it.

Last week I did a Ska, Northern Soul, Reggae themed night followed by a Wedding the next day.
This weekend I have my Request Fest night which is always different and tomorrow is a 50th Wedding Anniversary.
Next weekend it's a challenge for me on the Friday because I have a Black Tie RAF Dinner & Dance event which includes a number of different genres, Waltz, Swing, Line Dances etc....(The Top 10-ish threads have come in handy) and then the next day I am back at the Equestrian Centre doing a party in the stables again which is pure Chart, Dance & RnB.

I like the variety and wondered if some of you either had the same kind of outlook as I have or if you stick to Weddings etc and specialise in them?
Do you get bored doing the same kind of thing?
Do you solely just do a residency?

I have bookings coming up in the future where I am doing themed nights, sound & lighting (small events), working alongside bands etc and as I said, it keeps it all exciting for me.

i'd perfer a decent mix but all my work in may-September is weddings, roll on christmas for a nice change :D

I mainly do wedding now but i do find most of them are different in there own little way.

I do everything at one particular venue which, for 2012 so far has included Christmas Parties (yes, in January), corporate presentation functions, weddings, 18th to 75th birthdays, school proms, anniversaries, a Take That and a Skooldays theme nights, a kids party (they provided the games etc), and a summer barbecue.

Being part time Im lucky to be able to turn down gigs - I explain to my customers what Im good at ( as you probably know from my threads I tend to play a lot more dancier/chart/urban music) In a way I have found a little niche for myslef in the market there seems to be quite a few weddings/birthday parties where the customer wants the above music - they tend to say we dont want any of that cheesy stuff. I find I get a lot of repeat business this way as the people that attedn these weddings / p[arties are usually friends into the same type of music.
I remember Steve from Corabar saying to me - are you customers choosing you because you play this style at weddings and he was spot on - Somtimes I do bang on about Garage and that and how great it works at weddings but I think cause I do tend to get the correct crowd for this at weddings

I do a twice monthly in chesham playing the above and Im loving it

I have a couple of residencies - one is a quiz night at a local pub (my step-daughter is now the landlady by the way lol)

The other is Friday night disco in Goole - it started out as a rock night but has now just become a request night - I'll play anything in any order - usually a great night.

They do get cover for me if I have another function booked - i.e. Weddings, Birthdays etc.. so in answer to your question, I too prefer a 'mixed bag' of functions.

This weekend is, quiz night on Thu, wedding on Friday, wedding on Saturday, 60th Birthday on Sunday but this is a rare occasion really, in the 'wedding season' I do roughly 1-2 weddings per month.

Noweadays I'm probably 85% weddings, 10% Corporate, and 5% others. Which suits me perfectly. Weddings are my favourite type of event.
