Another backup thread

Does anybody take cd players as backup anymore? My setup is all digital using another laptop as backup, Have never been asked to play anything from a cd so hope it stays that way

I use a Numark CD mix1 as my digital playout mixer and always have one of the decks loaded ready as instant playback if my computer fails. I then have a small mixer plugged in ready for back up and a spare amp and computer in the van. The only thing that I don't have back up for are my Peavey Pro 15's but guess that they hopefully won't blow together. i do not drive them hard at all.

I'm so tempted to dive in with an absolutely flippant reply concerning the dialogue I've had with a Scottish Gentleman on this very matter, but much as I love a good running gag, I think that one's not got legs anymore.

So, the serious reply: I went for the win-win solution. A Numark DDS drive unit in my radio mic/soundcard case. It actually works better with a Cortex than the Numark D2, and should work even better with a laptop. Functions as a hard drive ( fit any size you like, as long as it's EIDE ) and reads anything you can insert into the DVD slot. One USB connection, acts as a hub for memory sticks as well. Simples.

I still have cd players in a flight case that are loaded with CDs just in case!! We are all digital but I always like to have as many back ups as possible for my own piece of mind.

I only use cd's. My present main rig uses Numark CDN88 andmy back up rig uses ...yes...Numark CDN 88. I also have a CDN 95 at home which I will be putting in my main rig this week to replace the 88, not that it is faulty though.

havent taken a cd player to a gig for many years. Ive got an old ipod loaded with popular songs as a backup to my laptop and cortex player.

I have 2 laptops, duplicate external HDD's (sync'd on a weekly or fortnightly basis) and an SD card reader as 3rd backup.

I can play CD's through my laptop if a guest supplies one (only happened a handful of times though).

I also have a 4th backup which is a portable CD player (cost around £5 off ebay) but it's never been plugged in since I got it - it just sits in my cable carry case.

Very much same set up here, main playout laptop with most popular songs, back up laptop with full music library and then ADJ SDcard reader as a 3rd back up option. :D

If customer require CD to be played then just pop it in DVD drive on one of the laptops. :D

Have just rebuilt my flight case which is 10u 4u slant with a demon x500 and a dp2 controller. Added in my numark cdn cd player and just found the whole thing to heavy!. Which is why I have thought about ditching it as never use it anyway. Might go down the route of a portable cd player tho

We always take 2 laptops one has never been taken out of the bag, but it's all ready to go should need be and a numark cdmix1 loaded with 2 cd's.

We have however had to flick over to a cd and play a track on a couple of occassons because the laptop locked up, luckily it still carried on playing so we simply mixed in to the cd, rebooted the laptop and no one was the wiser. We have since ditched that laptop so never had a repeat, but we always connect the laptop and cdmix1 with cd's to our main mixer as a matter of course.

For run of the mill gigs we generally use at least 4 speakers and 2 amps and always have at least 1 backup amp pre wired in the rack, so if an amp did fail it's just a matter of moving 2 speaker connectors and depending if its bass or highs move the patch leads and switching the backup on and all the speakers are back up (2 mins max), but as we also use crown amps we have never needed to use the backup amp. We also carry a spare midi mixer, lights, mics, leads, toolbox etc basically even if 50% the kit failed we have a backup for it. The most likely device to fail in my eyes is the laptop, hd corrupts, laptop psu or O/S glitching.
