RCF 705 Sub - Set up.

Apologies but for some reason, when I try to upload a photo of the back of the sub, I get an error and the forum freezes?

Just wondered, those that use the RCF 705 subs, how do you have it configured on the back of the unit?

Sorry but I haven't used subs that much and it's a bit of a weird experience having all this bass for starters. My ears are getting used to it slowly.

I'm connected as follows: (I've heard different opinions on how to set these up. Some say Mixer straight to Subs and then Subs to Tops and some say vice versa).

Mixer XLR (L) to Sub (L) - Sub (L) to Top (L)
Mixer XLR (R) to Sub (R) - Sub (R) to Top (R)

With reference to the buttons on the back, this is where I am a bit confused so please, if anyone has any advice can you please give it in 'simpleton' terms.

Now I have never owned/used one before , but AFAIK the button marked 80hz-120hz is the internal crossover frequency , in the 80hz position , all frequency's above that get pushed to your tops , same as the 120hz , depending on what tops you have , it will give the frequency response of the tops , lets say your tops are rated 100hz to 18khz , then I would have the button in the 120hz position , in the 80hz position you would lose out on frequency`s between 80 and 120 , and there and awful lot of music components in there.
this would give rise to drop outs in the over all sound
I am sure that several members use that sub , and therefore would give better advise.

Unless you're using tops which have a frequency filter like QSC or some HK tops, then subs first is the usual method, just as you described. Daryll is spot on with his assessment of the crossover point, and one way of seeing what suits you personally is the tried and tested method of "suck it and see ". :D Pick a track you know well, and play it in succession with the crossover set at each value. What sounds best, is best.

I use 4Pro's - exactly the same except a bigger driver.

If you are using two subs, connect from mixer L/R into the L input of each sub. Connect from the L output on the sub into the to the input of your top.

If you are using one sub (stereo mode), connect from mixer L/R into the L/R input of the sub. Connect from the L/R output on the sub into the input of your tops.

Set switch to X over, otherwise your full output signal will be passed through the driver on the sub which won't hurt other than clipping the amps more often.

Gain should be around 12 O clock.

As for the 80/120Hz switch - the setting depends on the size and frequency range of the tops. Basically, any part of the signal above the switch value goes to your tops, the remainder goes to the sub. So, set at 80Hz, a good proportion of the lower signal range signal is sent onwards. Set at 120Hz, just the mid and upper frequencies go the tops. Personally, I set this by ear. If it sounds right, it is right.

Paul, your advice about the X Over was spot on. I kept looking at the back of them last night as I could see the clip light illuminating more than I thought it should. I had the Link / X Over button on Link.

I agree with 'try it and see' (or hear), there's no one answer. And there are so many room variables that you're not going to get the same sound at every gig anyway.

What I would do though is make an appointment at RSD and spend a few hours trying different RCF tops side by side against your Mackies - I did this with my K12's and the difference was amazing, after all RCF bins and tops are made to go together, and going down a size to 10's makes sense if yo are always going to use them with one or two subs.

Then if you did buy a new pair of RCF tops you could keep the Mackies as hire, back-up, extra system for two room functions etc.

You'd then have a brand new system with a 3 year warranty for peace of mind.

It's worth noting that the manual states that clipping occasionally is fine but when running where the clip light is on a heck of a lot isn't.

If your subs are anything like mine, (I have the 902s), you get the impression they should 'pound' more than they do. I find they give a nice balanced sound rather than rattle the glasses off the bar.
