Another one bites the dust

Sadly my beloved JTS Radio Mike seems to be at the the end of its working life after a million yee-has have been shouted down it !!!!!!!!!

Last night in Portsmouth it started to drop out for a second or so every now and then when more than 6 feet away from the receiver, despite performing perfectly the night before in London.

Fortunately I always carry a hand mike back up so no problem.

Replaced the xlr lead, mains lead and batteries on the unit but no luck.

Wonder if its the sea air:daft:

Actually no, because I did the same gig last year no problems:beer1:

Ah well 6 or 7 years of non stop use all night on goodness knows how many gigs is not too bad I guess.

Back to the Disco Shop for a replacement next week;) unless they have a repair solution.

Any suggestions for further tests gratefully accepted

Depending on which JTS handheld it is but have you tried unscrewing the head, blowing out the connectors and putting it back together?
My JTS developed a fault very similar to that but I took off the head cleaned up and all was well again.

Thanks for that--I will have a look but it sounds to me like a breakdown in the wireless connection caused by some kind of electrical component failure.

Blowing out connectors i dont follow--which are these as apart from the battery case I cant see any--

How did you clean up the head/ windshield--mine is very clogged up but there doesnt appear to be an easy way to remove the windshield to clean the guaze other than taking to a dealer--money which might well be better spent on a new one.

Bear in mind this has had a huge amount of use--probably 10 to 15 times the average DJ use--although I dont know if you talk on the mike a lot
or wait for it--

Couldnt ring my DJ shop or Proel as service departments closed on Mondays :confused:

A strange situation--set up the JTS at home today using same leads, connections and amp/mixer as Saturday.

Works perfectly---counted up to a hundred over the mike--as in one two, three etc, thats a minute and a half--no sign of dropping out of signal.:confused::confused::confused::confused: even 20 feet away with the receiver inside another room.

Maybe the JTS will outlast me now :rolleyes:

Im nor being paranoid BUT as I was working near Port Solent Marina Portsmouth ( 800 berths) I wonder if some radar/radio signals of some kind from the
boats, yachts etc in the area could have caused interference of some kind?

A hand mike through same set up was perfect.

It was all ok last year when I did the same gig though with the same JTS Radio Mike.

Any observations gratefully accepted--otherwise I will have to use it again and hope for the best, taking a back up Radio Mike.

It may have been the heavy use of radio mics in the portsmouth area Allen. I have similar experience in several venues I work at. They may be fine so dont jump for the chequebook give them a try at some other venues. But if looking for different ideas I quite like akg as they have good range and reduce feedback nicely. Or i have a dual Shure system still going hint hint.

I was not aware of other venues in the area but presumably there might be activity going on--I have UHF--but so do plenty of others I guess.

There is a positive from this already-- as its raining I have spent the afternoon sorting out all my radio Mikes.

My "freebie" top of the range EV Radio Mike I won 18 months ago has never really been used because it has incredibly high gain on it--causing feedback problems in some venues---after a bit of thought I used the unbalanced output into a line socket on my mixer and this seems to have cut the gain considerably and it sounds more balanced--yeah an oxymoron for sure.:daft:

Will give that a whirl Saturday as in a massive Marquee for 300---a good test.

Also got the back up with Martins (Vectis) old KAM Radio Mike which gives a reasonable sound as well.

Its still a learning curve after 40 years plus:rolleyes:

Must have been the answer--two gigs over the weekend absolutely no problems at all--now put the cheque book and credit card away:beer1::beer1::beer1:

The DJ Shop suggested changing the frequency so thats something to try.

For feedback---err general information that is on Microphones :rolleyes: --the EV Radio Mike is now impressing me quite a bit as it has a long depth trail---which means if you are say 40 feet from the speakers the sound is still quite full--the JTS tends to lose a bit of depth after this kind of distance--although you can still hear very clearly.

My only gripe with these units is that the mains lead which transforms the current down to 12 volts ALWAYS has a very thin cable which is bound to break down sooner than later after coiling/storing. Grrrrr!
