Just curious really, but I am wondering what contribution wives and girlfriends make to your business.
I have noticed recently quite a few partners now accompanying DJ's to events and even actual gigs, whilst others have little or no contribution to make.
Personally my wife supports me as much as she has any job I've had but it stops there. She doesn't come along to bookings with me or anything but will give an opinion when asked. I prefer it this way to keep family and work life seperate as much as possible.
Any opinions ??

Public events my girlfriend comes along to for company and to help out with the running taking requests etc. For private functions etc no I feel it wouldnt look right. But she is quite happy to answer my phone at home and give me opinions when spending money on gear etc.

Up until Sunday when she did a wedding fayre for me with the candy cart, none.
She does the banking for me and buys the odd thing, but apart from that, why would she be interested?
I don't go and do her job or help her with it...

And I'll tell you what I can't stand....people who profess to be running businesses and then have to ask their partner/wife/girlfriend for permission to buy something...:zip:

Funny you should mention that, we had discussed getting a candy cart for my wife to sell, but decided against it as would mean we may be working together :D :D

Mine comes to many meetings and is very helpful. She usually sits there and does not say much but when asked for an opinion she is excellent.
She is doing two wedding fair this weekend and being trained as an all day assistant. She can already set all my stuff up so thats a help at times.
The main thing is she realises its a business so its she of no use she will be elsewhere and let me get on with the work.
Having said that she has only come to 5/6 gigs out of 5-600, when i need the help.

Out of interest, WHY do you take her to meetings ?? Is there any real purpose or is it just incase you miss anything ?

I seem to have a different POV from those who've already posted.
My last girlfriend (and the mother of my children) hated me working. She was so insecure every woman in the world was a threat let alone those that might attend my gigs. Now I've never given her any reason to think that way about me and I can swear on my kid's lives that I've never cheated, or even been tempted to cheat, on any of my partners, especially her. She knew I'd been doing this for way longer than I'd known her and, in the early days of our relationship, I used to do a local karaoke which she used to attend. But she still hated me going out to do what I do best. She actually thought the ladies would be out to chat me up and doubted that I'd resist! Now, anyone who's seen me will know that I'm a 16stone pug ugly so-and-so so hardly the best catch for the ladies. In fact, it has to be said, that in my years as a DJ I've been chatted up more by lads than lasses  but still she was paranoid. And this did put an extra strain on our relationship. I can't say that's the reason we're not together now but it did play a part.
In contrast, the partner I had before my last used to come to my karaoke gigs and help out presenting. She was good and we worked together well. But that didn't work out between us as I went to see her one day and there was a strange lad at her flat. She said "Oh, this is Mark and he's my new boyfriend. We're finished now so bye!".
So, as for partners being involved when you're DJing, I think it depends on your partner. Someone like Angela who understands the business, and is obviously very supportive of Steve (and who, from what I've seen, Steve totally adores anyway!) then I think those relationships can only benefit the DJing business side of things. But, on the other side of the coin, if you've a partner like my ex then you're probably best on your own! ;)

I know was trying to crack some humour :daft:
Anyways my Partner keeps out of my disco business, I asked if he wanted to come alone to a public function once and he said it was boring just standing around all night and has never shown any interest since, which isn't a bad thing as to be honest I can't stand having someone standing around me when trying to work :D

Is there any real purpose or is it just incase you miss anything ?
Actually yes, I usually say at the end have I missed anything and she is always spot on.
"you have not asked them who the photographer is" etc. She also gives me great feedback after.
"you should not have mentioned that, or maybe this....." So thats a great help as she is always right.
I tend to have meetings most evenings so we often eat out after as the meetings are at the venues not people homes.
I would never see her if not.
She would not be there is she was in any way a negative to the meeting.
In fact my booking rates have greatly increased since she has started coming with me.
She makes me look good too. Lots of people think she is the brains of the outfit which may be correct :p
She is running two wedding fairs this weekend so I am involving her more and more as she is super efficient at sales and well presented.

The better half is no problem. Now having young kids, particularly like our youngest who didn't sleep at all well, or very much, for his first three years and that is a killer. Guaranteed. I was half dead and could barely function for that period of time. Not good for business.

My fiance comes along with me to almost every gig we do. As well as being my roadie, she helps dealing with requests, music selection and keeps the music going if i need the loo.
At one recent karaoke gig, a hdmi cable failed and i didnt have a spare, she kept the party going while i nipped home for a replacement.
At kids parties, shes out amunst the kids organising games etc.
Its weird for me when shes not at a gig.

My wife came to a NYE disco I was doing (also an 18th birthday party). She got sooo bored and has never been to one before (apart from where she is a guest at a friends party and I'm the DJ).
I'd rather keep it that way too as I think it looks very unprofessional to take a partner along.
As for buying equipment, I let her know but don't ask for advice - that's what forums and review sites are for - she has no interest or knowledge of the business so she's fine with the decisions I make. She knows I check and double check to make sure what I'm buying is fit for the purpose - I'm very thorough in my research :)

I would not even think about taking my wife along to meetings or functions with me.
She shows a big interest in my business as I do hers but why would I want to take her along with me?
She's far too busy with her own business anyway.
My wife tends to leave it to me,
She did help me choose my last speaker purchase and quite likes the day out to BPM.
She has attended some discos but usually as a guest
She makes me snack when I get in late.
I rarely ever have my wife with me whilst working, the only occasions she does is when its appropriate (we know the host, or a situation like that). I have to say, I love it when she does come along, as, due to the nature of the job, we have to make the most of time together. She's excellent company and always supportive with the business...helps out with admin from time to time too.

Isn't she in the wedding industry? Would that not be beneficial especially if you have the same client :)
Dresses or something like that i seem to remember.

my partner ( omg just edited this she my wife now) generally leaves me to get on with the gigs etc
She is very supportive as we have 2 young boys and oftern has to stay in sat nights with the boys - She does come to about 1 in 3 gigs -(normally my residencies open to pulic) she generally isnt that intereted in music etc - Shes more interested in getting drunk and dancing. She pretty cool though about the whole thing - When I have a local gig she usually asks who its for and if she knows then warns me etc if they get rowdy.
She somtimes even stays up for me when I get in and give me hand unload some of my equipment which is quite sweet - But I think its more due to the fact that we have a 24 x 7 mcdonalds down the road and Im somtimes get the 1am - Im hungry text ;0)

She has her own shop and designs couture wedding dresses. I don't see how it would be beneficial to have her there?
Do you know how long the whole wedding dress process is?
I have had a number of very well paid bookings via my wife and she does get invited to the weddings from time to time because the Brides, Bridesmaids, Mother of the Bride/Groom etc are so happy with what my wife has produced for them but it's very, very rare that she will go.
On the occasions that I have taken on a booking that has come via my wife, she will tell them all about my business and then it's over to me. She's done her job.
Just to add - Toby, she is actually doing very, very well and has been featured in Vogue as a featured recommended business so it's a bit more than "Dresses or something.."
Cheers
