View Full Version : Pricing Structures on Website's and the REAL reason behind your policy

**I've started this thread on the basis that I feel this is an important subject, and unfair to discuss this on another topic not related - so apologies from me**
Over the past 7 day's I've gone through 100's of websites across the UK, and strangely enough found the younger companies openly advertise with direct prices and different packages with added extras, but then the older companies who mostly don't even mention prices or packages. Now I know this causes debate, especially from the companies who funny enough mainly use these threads and refuse to advertise prices, hopefully in the near future we can target the more young mobile DJ/Presenter on here to form a more two sided debate and discussion.
We all know why certain mobile disco owners prefer to hide the prices and force consumers having to go through the historic 'quote' process, and here are the exact reasons, and what's funny is the CONSUMERS are fully now fully aware why some companies are against it:
“Oh, because I don’t want my competitors knowing what I charge.”
“I don’t want to put people off from contacting me.”
“I want to be flexible so I can charge more if I feel I can get away with it.”
"Gives some owners the opportunity to double book, get a higher price on the second client and ditch the first one"
Research in business has shown that no matter how hard potential clients searched 50% of the more 'historic' mobile disco companies, you just couldn’t find the page called “Prices” or “Packages”. All you could do was to either fill out a repetitive boring quote form, sit back and wait for the answer or by been forced to call a disco owner and been worn down by the endless sales speal that he or she has asked about 10,000 times in there limited career as a mobile DJ.
By not having the price on their website easily accessible, clients only thoughts are “bet they are too expensive!”
Wasted time on enquiries. If you want consumers to contact you for a price, you have to have the systems and spend the time to respond to these enquires. And from what clients say about mobile disco owners, they can wait between 1-72 hours! You offer a free consultation or quote – up to an hour of your time – only for the potential client to say “thanks, but I’ll have to go away and think about it”. Translated: “Thanks but it’s more than I thought. I can’t afford your services but I don’t want to say this to you directly”
My percentage rate when I first started out went from 40% to 70% as soon as I put my prices on my website. If the prices put people off before contacting me, great. It saved me that consultation hour and I was able to get on with other stuff that did make me money.
If you have created the right product/service to provide a solution for your client’s problems, be confident about your pricing. If you are not overcharging or under selling yourself, charging the “right” price is a good business decision! It’s nothing to be ashamed of ;o)
Makes the sale easier. If someone knows what you charge before they start talking to you, the whole sales process becomes so much smoother. There is no need for you to stumble over the question “What do you charge?” They already know, so you don’t need to feel embarrassed or awkward discussing it. (We really don’t like talking money, do we?!)
Stuff the competition. So what if your competitors know your price. If you don’t put it on your website, I am pretty sure – if they really wanted to – they would find a way of getting your price lists. You don’t have time to be getting in to petty price wars with other businesses.
So be bold. Be brave. Clearly state your prices or packages so your potential clients know exactly what they are in for, so that when you get to speak to them or they click the order button, they are ready to make the decision to buy.
The most successful brands out there are the ones that are open and honest! Time and time again consumers want this.

All well and good if your based in a densely populated area and can generally give a price that is inclusive of most of your travelling.
I live in the sticks, and can travel 50 miles/1.5h (one way) and still be in the same county, therefore I cannot have a "one price fits all" on the website, and to have "prices starting from £xxx" could be construed as false advertising under ASA guidelines.

I already warned you on your previous thread that your assertions were downright rude and bordering on libellous. Way to go to re-post them verbatim! :Censored: I really hope that you're not as rude to your customers as you are on here!
Putting that aside, would you care to answer the questions I raised on the other thread about the research you're quoting statistics from?
Also, when visiting hundreds of websites, how have you been deciding which are 'younger companies' and which are 'older companies'?

I've highlighted these 3 statements / reasons in your post and am adding my own personal reasons..
“Oh, because I don’t want my competitors knowing what I charge.”
That's not my reason. I know roughly what most of the people in my area are charging and I am around the same as those that also take it seriously or those that are also doing it full time or also running large or small businesses.
“I don’t want to put people off from contacting me.”
Again, not my reason. I did it when I first started and stopped as I wanted to see whether it made any difference whatsoever to the amount of enquiries I was receiving - It didn't make any difference at all. Yes, I would rather people pick the phone up and call me or email me because they I can tell them WHY I charge what I do and WHAT they get for their money.
“I want to be flexible so I can charge more if I feel I can get away with it.”
Once again, NOT my reason at all. In my opinion, EVERY booking is different and I will charge accordingly. I don't try to get away with charging more ever. I may try to get the maximum I can out of a booking by advising the customer of additional services that can be discounted and sometimes I may add an additional service for free so that I still get what I initially want. This is more often than not Photo Projection which isn't such a big deal to me.
I have to say though that the final comment I have quoted from your post that I have copied and pasted above comes across as quite rude.
It implies that there maybe some of us that operate in an underhand way and that definitely is NOT the case. Sorry but that's my opinion.

Wow..... I have a gig on saturday that requires one and half hours driving each way, If I had a set price on my website then someone who is ten minutes away should pay £xx.xx and then someone who is 80 miles away (160 round trip) should pay the same???? ok so who am I ripping off?? the client that is 10 mins away, or should I have no business sense whatsoever and just swallow the price of fuel for the 160 round trip gig...:muppet::muppet::muppet:

Same for me,i give a general idea of prices but mention if it is out side a certain radius there may be a extra fuel charge and to call for a accurate price.

I'm young and don't have prices on my website, i like to offer the best price i can. By putting prices on my site i would have to have to average it out meaning people closer to me would pay more than they should, i live in the North of Shropshire and a trip to somewhere like Ludlow is over 100 miles roundtrip. The same goes for the venue, if the venue has stairs i add on cost as i have to get there earlier to setup and also because i have to do a lot more work if i did pricing on my website then i would have to charge more than i currently do for venues without stairs to average out the cost. What about different days of the year as well ? I charge more for a Sunday thats a bank holiday than i do a usual sunday. The only pricing i give on my website is the From price for a 4 hour evening party.
Besides i want people to pick up the phone and call me, i don't do this full time so have the luxury of being able to turn down clients i don't want/don't like.

I can see pros and cons in both approaches.
But when you say 'younger' and 'older' companies are you talking about the age of the people who run them, or how long they've been in business?
I assume it length of time trading - so what's the criteria, how many years before you stop being a young company?
How do you know why people don't show their pricing? I don't think any survey would have those options, let alone people admitting to some of them.
Having trawled through all those sites what were average prices (and lowest and highest)? They'd be a very interesting facts.
If you want to have a proper discussion I for one am happy to participate - but being a factual sort of person I'd like your statements validated before accepting them as fact, otherwise they're just opinion and for all intents and purposes meaningless.

But looking at London we have a huge amount of boroughs, and to get from one side of London to the other can take 2-4 hours? Plus you need to take into consideration we have Surrey, Essex and kent.
I'm sure there has to be a way around your pricing in order for it to be simple and open for clients to look at. I've always said that some gigs you will make a good amount of profit if they are close to where you live, and others may just buy you a good meal :-)
But I can honestly say if you stick prices on your site, especially if your competitors arnt you'll see an increase in sales.

Saying that Hammy (you've just reminded me), I totally agree with you.
I received an enquiry yesterday from a friend of a friend. The enquirer has been to 3 weddings that I have done in the past 18 months and it's her turn to get married next year.
She knows what I charge as the others advised her. The gig is 180 mile round trip so I have to factor in the additional costs for travel. She understands that. So, I get more than what I normally would because I have to travel which means I am out for longer and also have to put diesel in to get me there and back!
Does that mean I am ripping the customer off?
No! She's aware of it. She wants me because she's seen me, knows what I am like, knows the service I can provide and so on....
I hate it when people imply things whether they say it straight out or in a roundabout way.

Not really, I started out with concentric rings on a map from my home with in the centre and zoned pricing. But again, due to mountains in the way, what could take 30 minutes in one direction on a main A road, could take 1 hour heading the opposite direction.
Carlisle is 35 miles away, and takes 40 minutes to get there. Barrow is 50 miles away, and takes 1 hour 40 minutes on a good run. kendal is 50 mile away, and only takes 1 hour to get to.... absolutely impossible to issue general prices.

Seriously you need to take a chill pill, and stop taking everything so formal and seriously in life you'll end up having a nervous breakdown!
Statistics: Plenty of books on Amazon and in local libraries, just Google and see the results from independent business consultants and the office of fair trading etc.
In regards to deciding which is new and which isn't, checking via whois, companies house, look at the DJ images - some DJ's owners are young and some are old. Most of the time just looking at the wording and design of various companies tells you a lot about the owners and type of business especially the colours they use....:p
And our customers love us in fact that's why we have 75'000 fans on twitter and 2500 on Facebook, we invite our clients for hob knobs and coffee, offer 24/7 customer service, and promise to reply to all emails and texts within the hour even if its 4am! Our DJ's when they are out are never left alone, any problems they'll call a dedicated support line if any issues happen.
And once a year we invite our clients to DJ for us and test our equipment and gather feedback from them, and as a thank you we take them for dinner.
We event take our DJ's on holiday each year in September to say thanks for the hard work

I don't place prices on my website. I don't sell a product so there isn't a one price fits all. I sell a bespoke service and the final price is based on countless variables depending on the clients needs and event logistics.
In addition, not advertising prices has won me clients that I might not have gained if I had done so. Several times I've had clients stating that I was more than they were looking to spend, but after chatting to me they decided to entrust their event to me. Had prices been on the site those clients may have just clicked onto the next website to find their price range. So apart from the main reason I stated at the start of my post, the additional reason is that I want the opportunity to sell myself once the client gets in touch.
I'm not a 'cookie cutter' DJ, so a one price fits all strategy won't work for me. It may for others and fair play to them. Different strokes for different folks. I would never presume to say or imply that I'm right and their wrong.

September is very quiet for us, we're not a dedicated wedding service and in the past haven't really targeted this area. This was due to the demand we've been facing with everything else mainly our residences, corporate stuff, local government functions, and we didn't want to mess up with weddings. However we've got probably two of the most experienced and dedicated wedding DJ's who will be offering services for Megamix from Jan 2013, so a whole new project will be starting, with new branding, pricing, services, and marketing/advertising.
We decided on holidays for our DJ's in September so they are ready for the busy season from Oct-Dec

We currently don't have any spotty teenagers in our little family, but a young eager and experienced DJ would be good for us... A nice looking 20 year old male would be perfect for us in Brighton thinking about it - cheers for the idea

Sorry to go off topic, but just looking at your website, your "Silver" package photo looks better than your gold IMO...and more to the point, why have you been on MS Paint and "drawn" in your booth? lol
Also its worth noting, I did originally have packages...until i had a few occasions where what the client had told me was different to the actual night...i.e more people than the system could cope with. Put plainly, some people lied about the size of their party to get the cheapest option...

Do you presume my business has never evolved or changed? Believe it or not the vast majority here on the forum routinely share ideas, tips and tricks that help us grow our businesses. There are many of this forum been operating for 25 years or so, without change they wouldn't be as successful as they are. The phrase "teaching granny to suck eggs" spring to mind. You might surprise yourself and learn a thing or two here too, even from an old dog like me. I'm not entirely closed off to the idea that I might learn something new from you too. However, at the minute you've not said anything new or that I personally agree with. There's time yet though. I'm a born optimist.

So "Established since" means nothing....:BS:
It means that youve been doing something well for a long period of time and have kept your head above it when countless others have failed.
Ive been going for 12 years, since i was 16. Ive seen people I started with drop off the face of the earth and ive seen new outfits spring up and die off...and Im still here. The fact that someone survived in business for any length of time is a testament to their own skills as a Dj and a businessman.

Your business model leaves a lot to be desired, as do your grammar and spelling. I fear we all may be wasting our time with. On one hand he goes on about "tired old companies that won't evolve", then on the other hand he seems to take a closed-minded approach that indicates his way is right and everyone else is wrong. There seems to be a contradiction somewhere in the chain
There is part of me that thinks many of what he posts "is for effect". There has been quite a few things posted that have been relatively amusing (for all the wrong reasons), but other comments and posts that are verging on rude. Amusing we can live with, rudeness will just make his time here borrowed. It's very rare that a new member rubs so many people up the wrong way unless it's a deliberate act - classic troll behaviour. I'm all for given people the benefit of the doubt though. Time will tell. I'm optimistic. :beer1:

Young and old, newbie or long-standing member: all are welcome here. Debate is a good thing, and different ideas from the members is wonderful. HOWEVER, always show respect for others. You've come on here and done nothing but put people down and post purely for effect - which does you no favours whatsoever.
Each of us has a different business: we can all learn from each other, and regularly share tips, tricks, ideas... and pass work! However, you do need to understand that there isn't just one way to skin a cat; that there are different markets within the business; and that what works for one, doesn't necessarily work for all... and you definitely need to lose your attitude that anybody that you consider 'older' can't possibly have any idea of what they're talking about (and there we are - back to 'respect' again!).... Show some respect and you will receive it too!

No. We do however share certain views, and try to uphold certain standards. Politeness, courtesy, and decency are on that list.
Now I must apologise to you, your comment about disabilities has shamed me. I can see you're obviously visually impaired, because if you weren't, you'd have been able to copy Corabar correctly. Especially as it's written in chuffing great letters every time Angela posts something. I can feel your pain, as my eyesight is not what it once was.

Don't flatter yourself, my naive friend. I fondly remember the Great Identity Fraud, which had many of us on the edge of our seats waiting for the next thrilling instalment. The instigator of that is no longer a member*. Can you see a pattern developing here?

I like to see a bit of fire from a younger dj. I enjoy his posts and they don't bother me in the least. This comes from a very experienced dj!
If you think he's trying to get a "bite" then don't reply. Or, if you do respond, then a calm and measured response is a better way to deal with perceived petulance in my opinion. I've had people jump down my throat here on occasion but I either respond sensibly or ignore it completely. The thread very soon disappears through it's natural course. Just the fact really clients want the info instantly that's the way life is going, non of this sales or waiting for answer people don't have time for it - life has moved on since the time mobile disco's first started with the old yellow pages.
I'm not sure where the regular's on here are getting the idea that quality is compromised, we still go through everything with the client the only thing we don't go through is the price as it's sorted and already been accepted, unless of course they want our extras.

Ryan, I agree that it's wrong for any business not to reply straight away to enquiries - I know mine are answered promptly, I also know others do the same - we'd probably be agreeing with a lot more of what you say if you didn't accuse us all of bad practice, generalisations are seldom accurate.

Aha, I just knew that was coming at some point. So the prices you quote aren't the ones the customer pays, unless they have an "off the peg" disco? You can't give a price for a "made to measure" one until you've spoken to the customer at length, and ascertained their exact, individual, unique requirements.
Sounds a lot like the method of operation you've just spent ages denigrating.

Haa but the extras are clearly marked on the page! At the moment the only two extras I provide is over-time but certain pages are been developed on my site. I would never EVER just make up a price to customers as and when I feel like it.
However my prices do change often depending on demand for my services, very much like food and services you get on the high street

So you advertise your prices...but change them on a whim....
Nice waste of a night as were going round in circles and Ryan does publically what he claims many do in secret....

Bit misleading on your site then:
'My prices for all discos (excluding 31st December*) are:
Mon - Thur £30 per hour, Fri - Sun £40 per hour
So the cost for a typical 4 hour gig locally would be £120 or £160.'
Not misleading at all. I get some who want a £160 local gig because they're on a budget but they are few. Most want longer and have the extras which makes my charge as previously mentioned. The point is that my pricing is completely transparent. I hide nothing and they know how much it will cost before they contact me which is the point of this thread. Of course I promote my lowest possible price. That's what businesses do!

But your missing the vital point my charges are displayed openly and honestly, they may change daily, weekly or monthly. A bit like if you book a hotel, or buy a bread loaf from Tesco, or hire a boat for the day - prices change depending on consumer demand it's normal business practice. I'm not sure how you find this so complicated to understand
Any quotes I do give via NAD or Amp will remain in place when the client decides if they wish to choose us, if however the price comes down then they will receive the extra discount.

Ok, take this example....someone looks on your website on the monday, sees your price....by the time they put it to the committe/fiancee/whatever, your price has changed...they go back to them and say the price has changed, then when they look again...its changed again. Now you see that's what I personally don't like - being drawn in with a cheap offer and then finding what I actually want isn't available at that price and I have to start adding things on top and the final figure isn't the bargain that attracted me in the first place.
So your typical prices aren't the ones most people end up having, so what does 'typical' mean in this context?

That happens all the time when you buy a product or service, you cannot expect a TV to be the same price all the time.
If customers see a price and decide to come back a few days later then thats a risk we all take, saying that I would normally honour the lower price if this case actually happened as a goodwill gesture.

Under recent(ish) CAP code guidelines the ASA have deemed that "prices from" and "up to" must not be exagerated...so for example, if your childrens parties are £100, and you state "prices from £100"...but dont say that is for childrens parties, then its a breach of their terms.
Please...Let's not go down this route again, no business is perfect, he's a hell more open and honest about his pricing structure than calling for a quote and a DJ gives a price on how he or she feels at the time.

See, your still viewing what you do as a product, and are treating it as such. I dont offer a product, I offer a service and that changes depending on the clients requirements, as does the price.
I could go out cheap and turn up on the night and hope I have all the music/info I need to make it successful...but I dont, I have pre-meetings and consultation and ensure what im providing is exactly what my client wants. Ive even themed whole lighting shows on a clients colourscheme, because that what they wanted. Took 5 hours of DMX programming. They wanted it, I costed accordingly, they knew the work involved and were happy to pay my fee.

Our travel costs are included our prices, so if fuel when up then maybe our prices may rise by £5 etc. And certain locations are more profitable for DJ's than other locations, very much the same way taxis operate from short to long distances really.

So the cost for a typical 4 hour gig locally would be £120 or £160.
This price applies to the north-east area of Norfolk encompassing Sherringham, Norwich,
Gt.Yarmouth and the north-east Norfolk coast.
I would say mid priced with parties around £200 and weddings £200 - £350. And my bottoms fine!
Which is it, because youre either bigging yourself up on the forum...or false advertising. You can only have one "typical" price.

I cover travel up to 30 miles from base, then after that I charge per mile. One price probably wouldn't fit all for me as I'm often 60+ miles away (next week it's 160 miles). Being a bit of a niche DJ people can't usually find anyone nearer to them.

Out of interest, what do you base your business model on? I recognise lots of tried and tested marketing methods (and there's no reason why they can't be transferred to DJ'ing). Is there a particular business you take as a role model or is it a bit of a pick and mix?

You seem to throw criticism enough at your fellow friends on here, but can't seem to take it lightly yourself.
Oh and using the colours blue and white = Coldness, bland,
A natural color, from the blue of the sky, calming effect makes time pass more quickly and it can help you sleep. It's a good color for bedrooms. However, too much blue could dampen spirits.
Culture and Symbolism:
In many diverse cultures blue is significant in religious beliefs, brings peace, or is believed to keep the bad spirits away.
Blue conveys importance and confidence without being somber or sinister, hence the power suit of the corporate world and the uniforms of many police officers. Long considered a corporate color, blue, especially medium and darker shades, is associated with intelligence, stability, unity, and conservatism.

Coming back on topic a little.... I've had very mixed experience with publicising my prices.
Because I'm mostly working in the lower priced "disco as a commodity" market at present my prices are on my website. I don't have issues with additional mileage as my website has a booking system that adjusts the prices based on the delivery postcode and this also tells clients what area I cover.
However, most of the web enquiries I get ask for a price despite them being clearly published.
On my new website (under construction at present) I'm going to switch to aiming for higher value (not commodity) work so I won't be publishing my prices on the site as I want an opportunity to engage with potential clients before they book to explain why I'm worth the money before I give them the price.
So in short, I don't think either approach is wrong, it just depends whether you're looking to sell quantity to the mass market at commodity prices or sell high value, quality bespoke solutions in a specific market.
Personally I'm looking to work less for more, not more for less!

I agree in some sense, customers at times still do request a price through us but its about the newer generation educating these clients that gradually as the more established companies start to retire, or pass down to the younger ones etc...things will change and it will be nice and easy for clients to event go on price comparison sites etc

You're still assuming that the younger generation are going to continue with the same buying habits as they mature and that the buying habits of todays youth will become prevalent as time goes on.
My personal opinion is that with age comes experience and people start to a) understand why shopping on price (and not value) is not always the best thing to do and b) start to look for different things in their entertainment.
Low price disco's are commodity goods, all roughly the same and to be bought like any other other commodity, for the lowest price (possibly using a price comparison site or similar). High price, high quality disco's are a different animal - they're in demand and more likely to turn up on auction sites where people actually BID for specific dates than they are to turn up on a price comparison site. You may not recognise the difference now, but then I imagine you're still shopping in Tesco's, not Harrods ;) Primark not Prada, etc etc...
