View Full Version : Wanted: Cheap Laptop / Netbook

My 81-year-old mother is very intrigued about the internet - especially for shopping.

From time-to-time, she does have a look at laptop / netbook prices, but always decides that it's too much to spend when she doesn't know how she'll get on with it, or whether she'll use it. (The last time she used a computer was pre-windows DOS, and she's never used a mouse!)

So, I was wondering if anyone out there has got an old laptop or netbook sitting around doing nothing that they would be willing to part with cheap?!

She will only be using it to surf the net, so doesn't need all the latest bells and whistles or any programs other than an operating system: so long as it's fully working, able to connect to the internet wirelessly and/or with a dongle, and cosmetically decent.

So, if you have got one, please take some pictures and let me have details and the price you'd be willing to part with it for.

If I do manage to get her a laptop or a netbook, she may also be interested in a PAYG dongle if anyone's got one of them.

Thank you!!! :D

I would say that I have a laptop for sale, but all of machines are unfortunately used to destruction as all of my machines get used at least one or two times a day (it's usually the hinges which fail first).

It's worth having a look at Netbook's on eBay. You can usually pick up the Asus EEE PC's for just under £100 and they'll quite happily browse the net. The only issue with a Netbook is probably the screen size.

Argos and Tesco have outlet's on eBay where they sell refurbished kit. You can usually get a full size laptop with a 15.6" screen and a reasonable spec processor with a years warranty for just over £200. Failing that, search for Dell 630 or the HP Elitebook series (6930) on eBay for quite capable, but older ex-corporate machines for a little under £150!

JulianThanks Jules. Yes, you can pick up plenty like that, and, whilst a bargain, it is still a lot of money for a pensioner who doesn't know if they'll ever use it!

I am hoping that someone on here has something suitable that's just lying there gathering dust that they wouldn't mind letting go for a low figure (If you don't ask, you don't get!)

Very true - as I said I could let some of mine go for a low figure, but they wouldn't be usable!
