Lighting effect which one?

I hope this is in the right section but if not, could a mod move it please to the correct section.

Looking at cutting down my setup time, so I am looking for one effect that will fill at least the dancefloor area of my functions. You know the type mainly family type affairs.

Now at the moment there seems to be only one light that will do that and that is the wizard/wizard extreme.

Does anyone know of another light that might do the same as a wizard but is lighter than a wizard?

You could have a look at the Martin efx 500 or 600

There is nothing quite like the Wizard unless you look at the Warlocks or Martins own EFX500 or EFX600.

If you want go LED want to avoid the dotty effects then have a look at the ACME Mirrage. It's different and looks to have a fairly wide angle. It's a fixed effect in there a no gobos as such but it's not dots. It's no Wizard, but then at £149 it's not Wizard money either and as a single cheap effect it looks quite good to me.

This has already been discussed quite recently in the lighting section two options 1 Chauvet intimidator 300 barrel scan 2 ADJ inno barrel scan the first option is the best far brighter than the wizard and only weighs 6.5 kg certainly enough coverage of what you describe.

Nice post Johnny - considering you have been here for 6 years and have posted 48 times (6 posts a year) thats a good subject. :)

I am looking forward to the time that a really high performance light matches a Revo Rave size fixture.
It will not be long until we can have a massive show in just a few small lights.

i would pay good money for that. So far the best small lights have been lasers in my experience. My new Blue cluster is amazing.

Toby,the time is already here its quite easy to create a high performance light show with just a few small lights with out any dotty things i used 4 lights last night for a venue that had 400 people in total weight for entire show under 20 kilo 2 x Intimidators 300 rollers 2 x Par 354.

Maths was never my strong point.

I am limited for space as it all fits in to a flight case, but those are quite good.
I have never really been a fan of the shape of scanners especially with the glass bits on them.

I love the size & shape of the new Revo raves etc.
i have looked in to the two Wizard route but they are quite large and heavy.
Having said that I am happy with my current set up as its reinforced with the uplighting.

A scanner sort of effect would be of use however. :)

I have a profile thing on next months Promobile which will explain my set up a bit better. Just have to write the damn thing. :)

They might be brighter than the Wizard, but in the videos, they don't look like they have the same sort of coverage.

The Acme Warrior/Samurai lights have impressed me, from the limited experience I've had of them. ( I reckon other companies are offering very similar products ) They are slightly bulky, and the price is still a little high.

Its not much of a trade off the gobos are much bigger and more defined and with proper control will cover quite a large area ,i run two and inverted are very impressive imho the best lights i have seen coming to the market in the last year and i love the remote focus no climbing up to the rig and twiddling knobs + you have prism ,and rotation and some 16 built in shows fast and slow if your not a DMX fan.

I agree the wizard seems to come out on top. Remember I am only talking about having one effect, so it does seem what I was already thinking is correct and that is a wizard looks like the way to go.

At the moment I use 2 datamoons, 2 led parcans and a cluster laser and the wall behind me is uplighted. I will be dropping the datamoons and replace with 1 wizard. Then I will be able to control all with a dmx controller and that will also reduce my setup time a bit.

The Wizard/Extreme is a fairly unique effect (dish and barrel combo) - which no-one else has really done. There is the "Warlock", but that's an awful unit - nowhere near the same light output or reliability.

Martin no longer make the Wizard Extreme however. The EFX 500; I actually prefer to the 600, which I find has very poor light output, the optics just don't seem to suit the 150W CDM lamp for some reason. The "EFX" range is also being retired soon, and doesn't match the wizard for sheer coverage. Which means, you're left in a bit of a quandary - my day job is installs and we used Wizards for coverage. The closest thing - as already mentioned - is barrel scanners. Not the same effect, but about the closest you're gonna get aside from the EFXs.

We use the Intimidator 300 barrels and scans, and I must say the coverage is excellent (larger gobo's and obviously no dish - a different look) but still very effective. Unfortunately you need 2 to compensate for 1 Wizard really. The one thing I'll say about all the Chauvet stuff is that we've had "mixed" experience reliability wise, but on the whole better than a lot of the Chinese offerings. The prism is a bit of a let down as everything gets a bit muddled, but for "disco" stuff this isn't really an issue; and the prism obviously adds to coverage if you choose to use it.

You need a controller to get the most out of them, which is where the Wizard / Extreme was a winner - plug it in and go, or with a bit of dip switch jiggery pokery, you could make them do "slow" and more subtle stuff...I love mine and they still get used on nearly all of my gigs.

In summary - err - I hope this sort of helps.
