Just bought Class D 12" speakers, Good/bad buy?

Hi!

I've decided to make a return to DJing after a few years, and I'm building up a rig up again. I somewhat impulse bought a pair of 12" ABS speakers by Class D on Ebay. My question is, have I made a horrible mistake?

I think you did well you can use these until things really get going for you then you may decide to get something better and keep them as back up.

The real answer to your question is if you re sold them would you get your money back ? yes you would.

Now the less encouraging news. Class D have a habit of putting absolutely no info on the back of their cabs, so there are two possibilities. They may be JAC-12s or CD-12Ps. If they're the ( newer and better ) CD version, they will have a bit more bass response than the JAC, but neither are going to loosen Aunty Mabel's false teeth at fifty yards. :(:D:D

I can't remember the power handling on these, but from memory they'll be 300 or 350w RMS, and 8ohms. I can't remember whether the plastic cabs are more efficient than the wooden ones, but would recommend an amp giving around 500w at 8ohms. I'd prefer to use them with subs, but they'd cope on their own for smaller gigs. Justin ( JAM Disco ) had a pair of the later ones in his rig, and they served him well.

Did you do well? When they were new, they were £200 to £250 per pair, if I remember correctly. A figure of half new price is around £100, so if they're in good condition, they're good value. Class D tended to make reliable low budget cabs, which were not overly efficient, so needed fairly big amps to drive them. I'd cherfully have paid £75 for them, if I'd wanted them. The worst news is that should you need spares, you'll struggle, cos they're not trading any more. :cry:

Hi Joe,

Peter is right, I did have some 12" plastic Class-d cabs and they certainly did serve me well for around 3 years use (hammering lol). They looked different from the ones on the ebay link you provided - I suspect these will be around the 250W region...
I always ran mine with 15" Class-d subs and they sounded pretty good for a budget speaker, providing you have a decent amp and (ideally) an active crossover.

The speakers you suggest on their own will probably suffice for a small-roomed gig but would definitely not fill a large hall so it really depends on what kind of venues and parties your looking at.

I did however sell the full 6 speaker class-d rig and amps and bought a pair of second hand (but perfect condition) RCF ART 322a's - now they are powerful and have plenty of bass response and have never needed subs yet.

Oh, and in answer to your original question - I don't think you have made a horrible mistake - everyone has to start somewhere - but just let me share an important bit of info (that you probably already know) - Sound is probably the most important factor in any disco - spend the majority of your budget on this! Fancy lights, effects etc. can come later
