Updating my setup

Hi guys and girls,
:Hi there:This is my first post in the forum (aside from introduction in the newbies) and was looking for opinions on my current set up. I work every weekend for a local venue (smallish place holds about 80-140) doing the usual birthdays, kids parties etc. Although I love doing gigs there I'm also looking to expand in to mobile DJ'ing and was looking for advice on updating my setup to cater for a broader range of venues and functions.

My current Audio setup consists of:

1 x QTX Qt15sa Active Sub (300w RMS)
2 X Peavey Pro 12 (4ohm) (200w RMS per side) powered by 1 x Numark Dimension 3 (475w per side @ 4ohm)
1 x Behringer DDM4000 Mixer (With sub out and crossover which i tend to set at 112hz)

As I said, I'm looking to put together an audio setup that can cope with most private functions (not arena scale lol, probably up to 250 people) but would like to utilize most of what I already have if possible.

What I want to know is what would you add to the current setup / what would you replace in the current set up to achieve this?

I wouldn't do anything hasty. Your rig as described seems an adequate starter rig. Initial thoughts are a second sub the same or a bigger one on its own, which would be more expensive.
Since you've got passive tops, there's a strong case for advising you to get a pair of passive subs and an amp, because if the amp driving your tops fails, you'll still be able to make a noise, which you couldn't achieve with active sub(s). There'll be plenty more suggestions along I'm sure.

Good advice from Peter.

The cheapest way would be to add an identical sub to the system.

Just be a little careful that you don't push the system too hard. If those mid/tops are rated at 200w at 4 ohms and you're putting 475w into each box make sure you're staying well out of clipping on both the amp and mixer.

+1 on another sub. Also using a crossover to highpass the tops means you can drive them louder as they won't be trying to do the bass too.

Thanks for the replies, my thoughts we're also heading towards having a second sub but I'd like to try and keep the setup as portable as I can (Since I don't have a van, just a mid sized hatchback) so a single more powerful sub may be the way to go.

As for the amp and top speakers power situation i only drive the amp about half way and keep a close eye on the clip lights, plus the tops only handle from 120hz upwards thanks to the crossover on my mixer.

Somebody else suggested i might be better replacing the tops with some active speakers (some £350ish 12 or 15s ie qtx, intimidation, kam) for the same reason as having a passive sub - if 1 amp goes then id still have the other speaker to keep things ticking over. What's everyones thoughts, and can anyone recommend any particular brands (lower end of the market - no ev, rcf ect) for either active full range 12/15s or passive subs?
