Vintage Theme

Following feedback from Brides, other suppliers and an upcoming showcase I am doing, the vintage theme seems to be the trend this year for a lot of brides.

However I can't think how we can 'help' with this theme at all. I have a showcase in 3 weeks and am clueless as to how I can possibly contribute. I have actually just purchased a couple of old gramaphones with records which I think could be good for afternoon music when having a vintage theme, but the evening disco I haven't got a clue.

Any suggestions ??

wow, a difficult one...

I would hope they wouldn't really be carrying the vintage theme into the evening reception as the sound quality would be awful and not half loud enough with old vintage equipment...

Also depends on what 'period' of vintage they are looking for. I think it's mainly things like the transport, venue decor that would fall into the 'vintage' theme...

Not much help I know, but maybe ask more questions and find out their expectations....

Mirror ball

I got a mirror ball back last year for a bride who went rather large on the disco theme.....When I've mentioned to other brides since they have all hated the idea of the mirror ball.....I don't even mention it now....

That said with vintage being fairly popular when its come to the evening they don't really seem to "care" about it so much....

...and funnily enough, I've had the opposite, Neil. Any bride where I've mentioned it, they all go "Ooooh! That would be great!" Mind you, I only mention it after I've spoken a fair bit to them and got a good handle on their ideas, styles, likes and dislikes, and it does go perfectly with a vintage theme.

If they're real vintage fans then there's a massive lifestyle subculture with plenty of clubs and events they go to and lots of entertainers and bands they'll probably use, a normal disco won't get a look in! They're authentic all the way.

But for those who just want a 'taste of vintage' offering the right music during the day and early evening is plenty enough for them. They don't want a whole night of it, though electro swing is a good genre to use.

Lighting - I've found simple white lighting has been popular with vintage theme weddings.

It did surprise me how much people disliked it, I'm not talking about a lukewarm "meh" response to the mention of the mirrorball but an actual "OMG I hate the idea". This is often in the old fashioned venues in which a mirror ball would work quite well in as well...

I had thought about a mirror ball, but the mounting of them where they would have any great effect put me off.

I'm not looking to 'specialise' in vintage weddings, more just something I can add to their day, which may help clinch the booking - that and the fact I have a number of showcases this year which are basing the event along the vintage theme ;);)

Just offer vintage background music through your normal system - that's been enough for my clients.

What? How half hearted! I'm ashamed of you. The very minimum must be lightscreens, ropelights, Carlsbro amps glowing green behind you, and a couple of HH 2x12 cabs, supplemented by the twin deck box perched proudly atop your rig. ( I'm not up on it at all, but apparently you can still play mp3s like this. :eek: )

That's retro not vintage - and if its got cogs on it it's Steampunk!
