Just thought I would point this out to you all I think it's a very reasonable price and very useful, you can stick it in your laptop for extra storage it doesn't stick out at all so you can leave it in without worry it will catch and damage your usb port.

I use these devices for ripping dvds that can then be played on my kids tv as their DVD player has a usb socket and my dvds then don't get scratched. The quality is really good and they have decent read times. However mine are only 16gb and cost me £12 each so these are a steal!

The one I got last week (different seller, similar price) works fine, nothing to arouse my suspicion at all, and I can usually spot a fake a mile off. EBay are pretty good at sorting things out if you are sold defective/ fake goods, especially if you have paid by paypal, I was stitched up by a seller from Singapore about a year ago, he ignored my emails, I had my money refunded by paypal it only took about a fortnight.

Ok. I take back everything I've said about this being a bargain. I've done a quick search and found the web is awash with fake Toshiba memory keys like this. In fact, it's such a problem that Amazon UK has actually blocked the sale of all items of this description:

I say Amazon UK as the US site still have 3 sellers selling these devices. Tsk Tsk!! :Naughty: Also the part number given on the imageshack file doesn't appear to be a genuine Toshiba product (at least not available in the UK)

Some sellers are selling this on eBay for nearer £50 but the feedback on the unit is still the same. For a similar spec genuine Toshiba memory stick, you're looking at around £80-£90 from reputable suppliers. And guess what? The genuine Toshiba TransMemory devices look nothing like those available on eBay!!

I was going to mention that you have to be careful when buying memory sticks on eBay. It's an age old trick to take a small capacity memory stick, change the firmware in it to make it think that's it bigger capacity and then inflate the price. I fell for this some years ago when I bought a 1Gb stick for the price of a 16Gb stick (when 16Gb was still very rare).

Check this page (http://www.bl0g.co.uk/memory-stick-capacity-scam.html) out for more info on the scam and how to detect fakes. General advice though is to load the stick to more than half it's capacity (e.g. stick more than 32Gb of data on a 64Gb stick) and then chkdsk across the stick to see if the file system is still intact. If it's a fake, data written to blocks beyond the end of the sticks physical capacity will have over-written data at the start - leading to disk corruption.

Play.com do occasional unbeatable deals on memory sticks that are genuine (I bought 5 x 16Gb sticks a while ago for £4.99 each!!) Just subscribe to their newsletters and watch out for the 1 day deals.

I think they probably are counterfeit , the trouble with eBay feedback is you get the item it looks the part and seems to work so you give good feed back, then if the item fails to live up to expectations or falls apart later on it still has good feed back, I don't think you can give retrospective feedback can you ?

I would disagree with that, if you had your music files on one of these and your hard drive packed up mid gig you could plug it in and continue.

I decided to buy one of these as well. It came today and it works fine. Plugged it into computer and worked straight away. i put 1000 songs on it and used it as storage and used it with mixmiester with no problems.

I don't think it's the integrity of the drive, I think it's more a case of it really being 64Gb which is what I am testing at the moment. (slowly!)

That is quite correct. The drive hardware itself is genuine. However, MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, they are of much less capacity than the 32Gb/64Gb sizes (1Gb or less). The problem is that there are formatted with a file system that doesn't appear to recognise there true capacity and will write files to the disc that are bigger than the available space. It does this by writing the file as normal and then, when it runs of space, goes back to the start and overwrites sectors that it has already stored data to. This means that the file is, in effect, overwriting itself. Whether this is because the the OS can't recognise it's true capacity or that the drive has been made to do this on purpose (making it an ever bigger scam) remains to be seen.

Well it looks decidedly dodgy. I am just awaiting the results of the test and it looks like that the drive has 5.9Gb of OK space and rest has been 'lost'. I will, confirm when it has finished though as it's still verifying.

After saying that the last USB flash drive was a bargain, I'm very reluctant to get involved with this thread anymore!!! :Embarassed:

However, I've done a bit of searching and the Extra Value device from eBuyer has received good reviews on several tech blogs. It hasn't got the fastest read and write times (which could be a problem if using with digital DJ controllers) but for general file storage it's not too bad at all. Like Steve pointed out, from eBuyer you know it's going to be as described and, to be fair, it's not advertised as a fully-featured all-singing all-dancing device but, instead, as a budget value-for-money item. Good find! :luck:

As for the SanDisk device - 128Gb for less than £65??? If it wasn't on a reputable site I would recommend not touching this with a barge pole. The saying "If it sounds too good to be true then it usually is" springs to mind. So I've looked in to this one further. I've found the device on sale at highly reputable companies such at Ryman.co.uk and Novatech Technologies all for around the £70 (+p&p) mark. All my current USB flash drives are from the SanDisk Cruzer range and I can't recommend them high enough. And this one, at around 50p per Gb, is possibly one of the cheapest, good quality USB flash drive I've seen.

EDIT:

The Reevoo reviews on the eBuyer page for the Extra Value device suggest it's not as slow as I'm making it out to be. I guess the tech bloggers are used to seeing top of the range, high speed flash drives so it may well be fine for DJ controllers after all.

What you tend to see with USB storage is that the most popular devices at the time are the ones with the cheapest cost per Gb. At present that seems to be 32Gb and 64Gb with costs hovering just under the 40p/Gb mark (based on Play.com budget range). At present 16Gb is priced at about 49p/Gb and 8Gb at 68p/Gb. 128Gb is up and coming with prices heading rapidly for 35p/Gb (Play.com - £47.99 for 128Gb! (http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/40601300/740205625/Slamtech-Genuine-Leather-128GB-USB-2-0-USB-Flash-Drive/ListingDetails.html?searchstring=play+usb+memory+s tick+128gb&searchsource=0&searchtype=allproducts&urlrefer=search))

Every now and then though you see new companies coming to market and running loss leaders to get their name out there, or sizes which are deemed to be "on their way out" reduced to clear stock. I mentioned this before, but a little while ago I picked up a load of 16Gb memory sticks for £5/each (31p/Gb!) as 16Gb started to drop in popularity, and you'll probably see something similar happen soon with 32Gb as 64Gb starts to climb in popularity... One to watch out for!
