View Full Version : First 'Real' Gig - sign of things to come?

Had my first 'real' gig Friday night. I say real, meaning not for family & friends, or the local school or Scout Group! Bear in mind, that i have just bought a Peugoet Expert to take all my gear only a week ago!

It was about an hours drive away, but as i was camping with the Scouts about 30 mins from the venue, this wasn't too much of a problem.

My time scale was to get to the campsite via a supermarket to buy the food for the weekend, drop off the Scouts tents at the campsite, and then straight onto the venue to set up ready for the gig (engagement party - 50's Swing & Rat Pack).

My local disco shop was supposed to have had in a Show Director Wed/Thurs, so i could play with it prior to Friday Night.

Here goes the good bits......

1. Phone the Disco Shop Tues, Wed, Thurs - no delivery of the Show Director. Friday, still not turned up, so i said to him that i needed to take him up on his offer of borrowing the one he uses in the shop. I would be round at 3pm to pick it up enroute to the gig. I turn up at 5pm (running late already!) and he keeps me waiting as he is with a Mastermix Rep - and then discover that he hasn't stripped it out yet! Leave shop at 5.45pm!

2. Get onto M25, about half way there and a large puff of black smoke appears behind me, and the van looses all power. Coast to the hard shoulder and call the AA.

(Called the happy couple to be, and they were fine. Not my fault they said, plenty of time they said. Lovely couple!)

3. AA turns up an hour later (they had been told i was on the other side of the M25, and so the AA Lorry i had seen pass me twice was actually looking for me!) and gives me the technical term for my vans fault - it rhymes with Ducked! Get them to lift the van and drop it at the hotel venue.

(One of the parents picks up all the tents etc from the side of the M25 with a smirk on his face...... )

4. Arrive at the venue at the same time as i was suppose to be starting - all the guests taking pictures of the 'DJ arriving in style'!

5. Set up where told to by the General Manager, he explains after 30 mins that this is the sound limiter and this is the hole i plug my leads into. Here is a box of adapters. Not a problem, i say, i've already checked, and it takes standard speakon connectors doesn't it? Nope! The sound limited plugs into Speakon connections on the wall, but some funny connector on the front for me, with no Speakon to funny connection adapter available!

6. The GM looks at me blankly and says, well, have you got any speakers (very tempted to say NO at this point)? Luckily i loaded them up to save me having to repack the van for Saturday's gig.

All in all a good evening. The happy couple even included me on their list of thank yous for still turning up after everything that had gone on with the van!

Didn't get any food though for the Scouts until Saturday morning - bless them, they don't have their breakfast until 10.00am! Still, the took the p*ss out of me for the rest of the weekend, so it serves them right!

Hope that this isn't the sign of things to come! Got to wait until Wednesday to see quit how ducked my van is!

Cool weekend then, well done for having 'the show must go on' ethos at your 'first' gig, I have a feeling that you will do well in this trade with your approach.

I promise to do my duty to god and the queen and do a good turn every day, you did yours! :)

Well Done on your first 'real gig', you had a bit of bother but still turned up on time and had alternative gear with you, well done. The experience will do you good. :)

It happens to the best of us, I'll never forget pushing a clapped out van down the road for 3 miles to the gig. As soon as I just finshed settting up the birthday girl walked in and within a split second i had 'happy birthday' playing, phewwwww perfect timing. I now set-up well in advance since and give myself loads of time. :)

:) :), I can remember there used to be the Cub Scout Law and the Cub Scout Promise, without Googling them , here is what I remember

I Promise to do my duty to god and the queen, to help other people and do a good turn every day", the law I cant remember though, something like a cub scout always does his best or whatever.....

Lololol - Yes I was a Sixer and enjoyed the cubs, but the Scouts I could not get on with, I was asked to leave one night for swearing and never went back. I just did not get on with the people at all, just clashed and all the Scouts there were people I had fights with at school.

I did a gig on a riverboat recently and one of my cd players decided it was going to stop working just as everyone was getting onboard. I jumped off the boat, into the car, left my mate playing a 70's mix cd. Got to my house, grabbed the Dennon's and met the boat at next lock.

Luckily it was only a 20 minute drive to my house and back or the night might have turned out differently.

lol

i remember a time when i was drunk (last time ever got drunk at a gig) and my sleeve caught the crossfader, i had no music, or so i thought. I phoned the boss who said he would bring another mixer (i thought i had blown it) but the mic still worked so i had to go out on the floor explain the wee technicle hiccup would soon be fixed and started cracking jokes....

the end of the night and the crowd stated that my joke cracking was the best bit....i was nervous as hell tho....boss wasn't too happy lol

I'm totally confused

What connectors are we talking about, and where is this sound limiter wired within the chain?

And what does a "funny connection adapter" look like? I want one in my trunk! Gis a clue - colour, size, how many pins?

Maybe it's something for people whoe aren't funny  , I can just see it now, you plug it into your mouth (or wherever it fits) and fill up with laughing gas.

Or maybe it's just a way of describing a connector you haven't seen before.

There were two Speakon Sockets in the wall into which the sound limiter was plugged (great big case on wheels, about 5ft high).

On the from of this thing (apart from all the knobs, sliders and other gizmos) there was one 5, 6 or 7 pin socket (didn't look that closely - all i knew is that it wasn't speakon!).

In the box of adapters there were several 5,6 or 7 pin plugs that split into two 1/4 inch sockets, or other 5,6 or 7 pint sockets. Again, didn't look too closely at the number of pins as i knew i didn't have anything like it!

It suited me really (hence not really trying too hard ie. should i re-wire my speaker cables etc) as they had music playing through the venue speakers and the sound quality was fine for background music, but i didn't think it would do too well when cranked up.

Just waiting to hear how many noughts are going to be on my garage bill..... boo hoo there go the new lasers then! :teeth:
