Advice on Relocating to Bournemouth area.

I am looking for some advice from the guys based in Hampshire or Dorset.

I am totally fed-up with the cold weather in Edinburgh.

Looking into the idea of relocating to somewhere warmer for 2016.

My wife is a vet nurse and would need to find a job with an job with another orthopedic referral practice.... there seems to be a few in that area that we could approach... but that would have to be sorted first. (If that couldn't happen then would just look moving down there to retire in 2026).

So firstly I want to jump on a plane to Southampton and have a look at some properties.

Can you suggest some areas to consider within 30miles of Bournemouth.

We have two young kids so will be looking for a modern area with a good primary school.

Could try Throop/Muscliffe area. Newish modern estate with good amenities and verges on countryside. Main arterial links nearby. I lived there happily for 15 years and my kids went to school there. They still live in Bournemouth and are happy and content.

I live on the Bournemouth side of Southampton - it's just the New Forest between us. I have a business in Christchurch on the eastern side of the Bournemouth/Poole conurbation.

I assume you've looked at prices, Bournemouth is probably 15% more than Southampton. Mark is right Throop would be as good a place as any to start.

Thanks Paul. We are in a detached 4 bedroom house with south facing garden here. Was £250k. So hoping to get the same down there. Probably go upto £300k.

If you're looking at places in Poole & Bournemouth I'd be happy to give my opinion. The trouble is - one road is really nice and the next can be a craphole, for example there are some parts of Winton which are very nice 4 bedroom houses = £400-500k and then there is another part of winton which I'd assume is more along the line of £200k.

I know two people that are thinking about moving / are moving and both have very nice houses but would be going for around £280k+ (parkstone) & £450k+ (winton)

All I'd suggest is keeping away from Boscombe / Springbourne areas, towards the centre of Poole isn't that great in areas either. Hamworthy I'd say has some very nice places near the water not so nice further in. My personal choice would be in between two schools in the map attached.
Both schools aren't the best, I went to both of them I thought they were fine however general peoples opinion seems that the first school is ok and the secondary school is crap. I live further out in a cheaper area but I walked through this area every day for school and would say these are nice houses at a reasonable price with good school links.

also down the road there is a doctors surgery I think which does different treatments not really sure about what they do though and a vets on the other road (all within 5mins)

The house prices are dearer than I imagined. The only house I could find that I liked today was on Charlotte Close, Talbot Village, Poole
but it was £400k.

We will come down and have a look later in the year at those areas.

I thought summer was on Tuesday in 2012 and on a Sunday in 2011. If it hadn't been for those 2 months of sun last year I would have gone south.

Having said that the practicalities of moving defeated me. It would take 2 years to wrap up this business up here and then another 2 years+ to re-build the business down there. Plus my wife would earn as much down there.... plus the cost of the houses seemed to be double for the same size!!

Try buying a house in the forest then - a 2 bedroom bungalow will cost you £500,000!!! :p

Bournemouth etc. is expensive unless you want to live in the less desirable areas.
There is quite a lot of drug abuse etc. in boscom etc. which is not great.
I would not recommend Southampton tbh. Winchester is better IMO but also expensive.

My wife has found a place to get work in Hursley, (near Winchester) so I need some more advise on this topic.

The reason for the move is purely because of the dire weather here in Edinburgh. It has been 16c and cloudy today...... whereas it was 24c and sunny in Bournemouth!!!

I'm from Winchester and still live here. Thankfully we get accommodation provided as part of my wife's job and house prices here are eye watering. I can't help with specifics as it's not something I need to follow, but I know if we end up buying we're likely to have to head further west (ie away from London). I believe that prices are a little lower in Salisbury and west of there.

It's not a myth, the whole south really is expensive, not just for housing. I'd suggest you try to arrange a week's holiday down here, preferably away from the peak summer so you get a feeling of what it's like for the rest of the year, and just try to explore as much as you can.

There are some really friendly DJs around here who I'm sure would be willing to be taken out to lunch in exchange for advice!

Do a search in Brockenhurst. You can get a 2 bed bungalow for less than £400k LOL.
I am looking for a development on a farm yard or something as the planning will be easier.

I live in gosport (fareham), just down the road from Southampton if your thinking of travelling the m27 is horrific in the mornings, worse than the m25 somedays, and the bottom end of the m3 is just as bad. I live on these motorways, its not too bad down the south coast house prices vary so damn much though, every major city has the same traffic issues the same with schools, here we have a really good school academically BUT if your children need any form of help your stuffed, the help goes to the ones who will keep them in the league tables. eastleigh is really close to hursley and its not that bad a place that I know off and there is also a dj shop close by lol .

The Romsey road is OK - links you straight to Salisbury area. I would look north of Winch.
I went to college at Sparsholt, just down the road so had to do the Soton - Hursley commute for 2 years. :)

She hasn't been offered a job... she was reluctant to move... but has now been persuaded. She has found a suitable company to approach. She is one of the top veterinary surgical nurses in the country and would need to work in a vet referral centre...(the places where they do hip-replacements and all the other complicated operations) She know a lot of the folk at the practice in Hursley as I think she trained many of them. She is looking for another practice further west... and I am looking for houses in all of the areas mentioned in this thread. ..

So, no haven't visited yet. Will do next year.

We are really lucky were we currently live. Large 4 bedroom house with garage, large south facing garden, cul-de-sac with green for the kids to play in, countryside on doorstep and also large retail shops... I think there will be some compromise downsouth.

Ah ok, so we're not yet tied into hunting in a particular area... in general the further west you go the cheaper it'll become as you head away from London, but also the closer to the coast the more the prices rise. And the less I can help. There are also large swathes of "Retirementland" where people trundle around in their Nissan Micras and generally nothing happens...

Look towards Dorset wilshire in that case. Stay away from the port towns would be my personal advice. If you want urban near. Country then Salisbury area would be my choice. The further west you go the cheaper it gets unless you hit larger cities like Bristol.

I would imagine there to be lots of wealthy pet owners nearer the Cotswolds.

That price sounds about right for Bournemouth in the alright areas, you'd get all of that for £280k if you looked in the ex-council style areas.
Don't know a lot about winchester but it does seem a bit more upmarket.

I don't actually know Alton itself very well as I've almost always driven straight past on the A31. I had friends who lived there for a few years but apart from visiting them, a Thai restaurant and Sainsburys I don't think I've ever been I really can't remember ever going anywhere else. I think it's a fairly quiet little town, not known for it's riotous punk rock festivals. Pleasant enough place to live and completely surrounded by picturesque rolling farmland and it's got good connections with the A31 running straight past, the wiggly road up to Basingstoke is motorbike heaven, and it's the end of the railway line from London with the old line heading off in the other direction now being a preserved steam railway, the Watercress Line.

Generally a very affluent area, the surrounding villages are generally still very nice small villages that haven't had much in the way of new development and I've certainly done quite a few private events in marquees in the area at houses that must be worth upwards of £1.5 million. No idea what the Alton schools are like but I believe Perins in Alresford (pronounced Allsford - uselful to know around here!) has a good reputation.

And you can take up gliding as the country's biggest gliding club is just up the road at Lasham so you often see gliders in the sky in the area! Alton's just outside the South Downs National Park, although the most picturesque parts of the park are still a fair way away and although there's nothing like some of the scenery in Scotland it's generally a very pretty area around the town. Chawton and Selbourne are the local tourist hotspots. And it's still can't be much more than an hour from Bournemouth (traffic dependent!) if you want to head down there.

Not much to add , its a lovely place , easy access to the A31 , good size Sainburys , and as been echoed above , some lovely villages all within 10 miles.

have to agree with the above, nice place.. good restaurants plenty of roads leading everywhere so to speak a31 to Guildford then a3 or down to the m3 for Winchester and the south coast, quite a main hub in that respect. traffic wise normal rush hour hassles mainly at the small railway bridge a31 end. parking is quite good although the wardens can be a bit hot. nice countryside, selbourne is quite picturesque with a nice deli there. its good for its walks aswell as main shopping center in Basingstoke should you need.

Can't find a house in Alton that is the same size as where we are now without doubling the price - £500k is just too dear.

Properties in Horndean, Waterlooville have dropped by 10% in the last five years.

Seen a nice house for £400k there.

Anyone on here know of the area and can advise if it is suitable?

Alton is about 10 miles down the road from me. It's nice enough and the surrounding areas are ok too. There isn't a lot for the teens and 20 / 30 something's so I hear but if that is the case then it hasn't changed much. It definitely is expensive around in this area. I have a 2 bedroom ground floor flat that has gone up £25,100 in value in the past 2 years. I was only in the bank on Monday getting a new mortgage rate and decided to see what I could get if I wanted to get a new place or invest etc and there isn't really a lot I could get but mind you, we want a nice little bungalow and the missus wants a project to work on. We don't have kids....well, we can't have kids so we're never ever going to want a big house.

Well, there isn't much more I can add to what has been said already by myself and the others (and they put it much better than I could).
Alton is one of those places you kind of pass through on the way to somewhere else unless you have a booking in Alton which, to be honest isn't that often.

And that 'wiggly' road that has been mentioned which is 'motorbike heaven' and runs from Basingstoke past Lasham and through to Alton..... well, to put it bluntly, it's a bloody death trap!
I've known a number of people who have been killed on that road (sorry to get all morbid!). No exaggeration but I'd say 4 or 5 times a week I hear ambulances drive past my house on their way to that road. It's more when it's wet or in the winter. I've also seen a couple of accidents myself there and they haven't been nice at all.

About 5-6 members of the HDA alone are from Waterlooville. it has the most (decent) DJ's of any other areas I know.
You will just have to face the fact that everyone wants to live in in the south - and it will cost you.
Thats why we are all charging £600+ for an evening and £1,000+ for all day. :lol:

The roads round Winch are brilliant - straight Roman ones worth lovely scenery.
