Nice playlist

Got this booking a while ago for a 60th birthday on 14th September and she just sent me an email with a playlist. I don't often encourage these kind of lists but there's some stonking tunes on here:

Her email first said:

Hi Justin

Well it isn't long now before my birthday disco. I have had so much fun putting my play list (attached) together with many happy memories flooding back as I UTubed them. I hope that you like my choice of tunes. If there are any problems or queries about the songs or the event in general please do not hesitate to contact me.

My all time favourite artist was Barry White. He always gets me up dancing. I will say NO to any other requests on the night. The young people who are coming to the party feel it is part of their education to listen and dance to the good old tunes :) The list already meets with their approval. My daughter and her university friends have even put dances together for some of the music and I look forward to their choreography.

All in all I think that it will be a great event and hope that you will enjoy DJ'ing the event.

Too many floor fillers early on IMO and that is the very reason that it's a bad idea.

I would ring her back and tell her that people probably won't dance that early and to move some of the tunes around.

Great tunes, my kind of gig musically, but if she is going to list in order, hire a jukebox.

Is this a suggestion of songs to play or what you have to play in that order?

Great tunes but if that's his plan (and he's actually getting a hold of the playlist itself) why doesn't he just dry hire a PA and put an iPod through it?

Personally I let the client know that to get the best out of me, I need freedom to do my thing. If they have suggestions and wish me to play X, Y or Z and have specific ideas then that's great but when they start banging together specific playlists I'm out.

I agree with Daz. Hot Stuff and Superstition during Meet & Greet time? You might get four or five people up dancing. Play them in the last hour and you'll get a full dancefloor. The evening should be built up to a crescendo, imo. This playlist seems like a race - 3, 2, 1 - they're off! I knew a DJ that played all the floorfillers early on and, to be fair, people did dance to it but they couldn't keep up the pace and ended sitting down for most of the later part of the night! Empty dancefloors later in the evening is not a good sight!

As long as I had permission to not only juggle the playlist quite a bit, and add ones of my own in keeping with the theme, I'd be happy enough with it. Hope it goes well and you all enjoy it.

Playing Maggie May an hour into the night???

Throwing out the odd floor filler early on can work but that's banging them out one after the other early on whilst it really peters out at the main event section thing she's got going on.

I'd also politely tell her that the timings of these things very rarely run like clockwork so not to be too anal about when things are happening and certain tunes are played.

Very good selection of tunes there but I hope you are going to explain to the client that its not possible to play them in that order. I would play some of the slower ones that nobody dances to at the start when the guests are arriving, then play the more popular upbeat tunes.At the same time I do hope you get flexibility on that playlist because as a dj you will know which songs go with which to keep the dance floor busy.

Conversely, were I doing the function, I might overrun significantly, because of my witty interjections and observations between the songs. I reckon I could add an hour on to that easily. :D
