Pioneer XDJ R1 - 'Hands on'

Hi Folks

i am looking to buy a nice simple 'pub' setup for simply the pubs we cover. So the basics are walk in with minimal (mixer/cd/midi built in one unit).

I have always used Pioneer and look at the XDJ R1 they seem to have covered quite a lot of basis with this unit giving a good back with the use of cd drawers built in, being able to run it of a memory stick and also native control with VDJ.

I haven't had any 'hands on' with this unit and was wondering if any of you guys have and if so what feedback you could give.

Hi Iain, I haven't used this but my initial thoughts are this: why would you spend £800 on a playout system for pub gigs? :confused:

That's nearly £200 more expensive than the Denon MC6000, which is still over-qualified for the job in hand. The Denon MC3000 can be picked up for just over £300, which would be more than enough for your average pub gig.

You could also consider the American Audio VMS4.1, as discussed in this thread (http://www.forum.mobilediscodirectory.co.uk/showthread.php?40855-American-Audio-VMS4-1-Anyone-got-one), although for an extra £30 I'd probably go for the MC3000. It has slightly less 'features' and only 2 channels I believe, but for this specific purpose it should be fine.

I've said all of that with the assumption that the XDJ R1 requires a computer to connect to it (as do the MC3000/MC6000/VMS 4.1) - if it is indeed an 'all-in-one' solution, then it starts to look much better for the money! :)

thanks for your thoughts and input.

it is an expensive unit but i have to say i have only ever used that level of equipment. i suppose its down to what your comfy with.

the XDJ R1 is capable of operating without a laptop. basically turn up with your library organised using Pioneer Rekordbox software on your pen drive and your god to go. Or if you want to just use CD's or if you want to run the system as a midi controller with the likes of VDJ.

for me this product appeared to have all basis covered so i thought it best to ask if anyone had been able to have play with it or better still have purchased one.

i wonder where DJ technology will end up?

Well i received a PM regarding this unit. I think i will be holding off from buying this for quite sometime as there are endless problems posted on the Pioneer forum and also on youtube.

Why is it that when Pioneer launch 'normal' run of the mill products there are always problems. When do you ever see multiple issues with the CDJ2000 nexus? When the high end models are launched they work well straight out of the box because they haven't been rushed. Manufacturers couldnt afford to have major issues with there flagship models.

Now I know it's not Pioneer, but it's probably worth having a look at this unit (http://www.numark.com/product/mixdeckexpress). It has the same feature set (rock up with CD's/USB pen and run stand alone as well as using it as a MIDI controller) and you can pick them up for about £450.00. I've been using one for 18 months now for both mobile gigs and walk up and it's performed flawlessly.
