View Full Version : Songs You Refuse to Play

Getting really sick of constantly being bugged for The White Stripes - Seven Nations Army at the moment. It's on my list of songs you shouldn't play at the moment in Edinburgh.

Hearts fans sing anti-hibs lyrics to the tune. Makes it potentially perilous to be played. Can play it in one half of edin, but not the other.

Don't want to play a song that will instantly split the room.

Other songs I refuse to play (unless specifically desired by the organiser - or a requester brings the organiser over to give their consent) are -

The Beatles - Hey Jude (Big Hearts Anthem)

Tina Turner - Simply the Best (Rangers fans sing sectarian lyrics to the song)

Gerry and the Pacemakers - You'll Never Walk Alone (too many links to Celtic)

Baddeil and Skinner - Three Lions (get a lot of requests at the student union for it, isn't going to happen)

The Proclaimers - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) is perilous but a bit more acceptable due to how big a party anthem it is, although many venues have banned it.

What songs do you refuse to play if any?

Crazy Frog.

Anything by Gary Glitter.

Forgot about Glitter - he's on my list.

Although had a request for him a few weeks ago, was the birthday boy that wanted it, old anthem for his team or something like that so got away with it. Wouldn't play it without real arm twisting tho.

To think - Michael Jackson nearly went on the list too but just escaped it. Play him a little too often at times....

Gary Glitter, yes. I don't quite understand the Crazy Frog though?

Very annoying and not 'proper music', but kids love it!

We had a thread like this before, and yeah Gary Glitter was definitely on the banned list!

Also anything with explicit lyrics, and as you say Jamie, football associated songs.

Don't you find the Hibs fans singing the White Stripes track too, changing the line to "Oh, Paul Hartley is..."? And for reasons unknown to me, The Proclaimers are adopted by Hibs fans too (maybe because of 'Sunshine On Leith'?)

LastMinuteDJs.net

Haven't experienced the Hibs fans messing with the White Stripes too much - I know they do it, but it's really in retaliation to the Hearts fans who started it. It's more associated with Hearts doing it than Hibs and its always the Hearts fans that are asking me for it.

Forgot to mention why the Proclaimers were perilous in my previous post - Hibs. Sunshine on Leith would be a definitely on the list as it's the big Hibs anthem. I'm gonna be is too but Scotland use it as well as well as it being a big Scottish party anthem so you can get away with it, although Hearts fans won't like it and some venues have told me it's off limits.

Football links are the main reason to have songs on the banned list, as well as artists that are no longer socially acceptable like Gary Glitter or explicit.

Didn't see a thread like this before, just something that's been bugging me recently with the repeated requests.

I'm sure the songs change regionally. Simply the Best is a problem in Scotland, but no bother down south.

The student union I DJ at only has 1 rule - no black lace..

No Black Lace!?

And I do have to admit, as a Rangers fan I am embarrassed and ashamed when other so-called fans sing 'those' lyrics to Simply The Best :(

sorry i have a problem with people not playing Gary Glitter/Michael Jackson songs...

Yes i know what they have done or aledgedly done, but to me the music has nothing to do with that, the music was made before they were ever accused and when you didn't know you didn't care and you played their music all the time. so if people now ask for any of their music I still play it, cos to me the music has nothing to do with what the people have done.

Music is a seperate entity, once music has been made it takes on a life of its own, seperate from the composers life and becomes something much more than what the composer had in mind.

Think about this...

Do catholics listen to Soft Cell, Communards, Boy George, George Michael? Because the very fact that this people exsist goes against the grain of the Catholic faith.

(sorry to use Catholic is this analogy but it was the easiest example, my apologises to anyone offended)

ps. what Jonathan King did can in no way be class as music lol

I remember having the same debate with some american dj's, they were adament that they'd play gary glitter regardless of his crimes. I personally won't promote and play a paedophiles music, it's just a personal decision. I also can't see why you would have a "problem" with people like me that won't play it?, I certainly don't have a problem with the people that will play them. Each to their own my friend. :)

The decision not to play is not so much based on personal opinion on the artist's crimes but the public's reaction if you play them.

Michael Jackson is still fine tho...

Totally agree with the comments about Gary Glitter.
He did do some fantastic tunes. Excellent party tracks.

As for Mr. King, the only one of his I really liked was 'The Piglets - Johnny Reggae'.

And what happens if an angry client comes up asking why you are playing it, as some of the guests are offended?

That's the reason I don't play it, I'd have no problem listening and enjoying his music at home, if I liked it.

In the last thread about this, I mentioned that Michael Jackson's music would be a far greater loss to us than Gary Glitter's - so I really hope he is innocent. If he was convicted of anything, I'd still listen to his music, and remember him as he was back then - as the most popular and talented guy on the planet

Sorry - may I just point out that Michael Jackson was cleared, and so to say that is actaly libelous?

Also - has R Kelly's case actually gone to court yet?

LastMinuteDJs.net
29-10-2006, 11:55 PM
Sorry it was just a joke - an old one at that.

I didn't state any crimes I just used the term 'shamed'. Allegations of any sort whether cleared or not still tend to 'shame' and leave a mark on the character of the alleged.

R Kelly was in court in July 2005 but don't think it has went back to court since.

I'm talking from a guitarist point of view. Jeff Beck is one of the most talented musicians ever. It would be like us going to a gig with an Argos home DJ kit and two 50w Hi Fi speakers. So degrading!:(
