1940`s lighting

Interesting one.
I have a wedding booked next year which has a 1940`s theme for a couple of hours , even the B&G are in traditional 40`s out fits.
now the music is no problem , but they have asked for 1940`s style lighting , at a loss at the moment , I did not think they had lighting effects back then.
any pointers , ideas , and no....I am not getting a search light....lol.

Simple mirrorball works well for this - and you can still use uplighting/colourwashes without making it look too modern.

Scanners set to white. Creates the effect of searchlights that were used to spot the German bombers flying overhead.

I love war-years shows. Great fun! :) Mind you, probably wasn't so much fun for those who had to endure the bombing raids and sirens! :eek:

I can't amend this now so I have to answer my on post but being serious - I played sax and clarinet i dance bands but not back in the 40's!! Decor was mainly art deco in the posher halls but there were still older ones and ones in municipal buildings. Uplights were very art deco so you can't go wrong there.

Other than that, mirrorballs were used but the band was the centre of attention and almost always lit on stage. You could design a deck frontage that looks like a dance band frontage (name and lots of colour / glitter). A bit of imagination wouldn't hurt - eg slow moving gobo's etc. There won't be too many guests at your gig who were old enough to be in a ballroom in the 40's.

Joking apart, some of the moving head spots at BPM would pass for searchlights, no problem. Very narrow beams, very bright white.

I don't think there was any specific lighting back in the 40's, even most of the vintage stage lighting features from the 50's or 60's.

looking at photo's from the time traditional house lighting was all they used.

2 options I'd consider:

1. create a theatrical type lighting theme using colour washes such as red, white and blue, camo green, (use stars and stripes flags, union jacks etc, bunting or

2. use traditional tungsten clear bulbs i.e white lights, or festoon lighting.

I'd imagine that disco lighting in any form didn't exist in the 1940s. Still, who's to know? I'd go with white lighting of some sort too.

The Band Fronts being the point of interest in the photo , maybe placed in front of the rig to imitate the effect of a band playing ?
