Hi all,

Went to visit a venue out of town this morning that I haven't been to before. The purpose of the visit was so that I could have a look at the venue to see the layout etc and show my face. I am booked for a civil partnership there in early 2014 and the couple wanted to meet me to talk through plans etc having already booked me because they are both in the forces and meetings may be difficult.
Anyway, had the meeting with them and the lady in charge and all went well. I sold the Uplighting service to them too as they were interested. I took a unit along with me and they loved the look it gave the room.

Throughout the meeting I couldn't quite put my finger on it but knew that I had met the lady in charge somewhere before. After the couple had left I went back to reception to get the code for the barrier so I could get out of the car park and she was stood there at reception. She said she was coming to see me for a chat so I went back to the room we'd been in and it was there that I remembered where we'd met before. It was from way back when I had been registered as a business for around 2 years. I used to provide Discos regularly to a venue outside town that eventually got demolished. I used to get on well with the lady and I actually DJ'd at her birthday party back then.

It was definitely a case of being in the right place at the right time because she told me that she would be in touch with me later today with reference to a future contract to supply Disco Entertainment. On my return home I checked my emails and there was an email sitting there from her saying it was good to see me again and that she looked forward to working with me again in 2014. I told her my prices etc when I was at the venue and she was more than happy with them so a quick meeting with a couple about their wedding next year has paid dividends by the looks of it.

The purpose of this post is to kind of show that sometimes it really is down to luck or knowing someone in a position where they can help.
I've done mail shots when I first started out and out of 100 venues, probably 5 got back to me. I wouldn't say don't do it but it didn't really do much for me at the time.
Yes, some venues stick to what they know and if it isn't broken, don't fix it. It's that way with a couple of venues I have residencies at but today for example, the lady said "Time for a change".

That's the reason networking is so darned important!!

Which reminds me. I joined the Mussel Club last year for just that reason but I haven't gotten to any of their events this year. Like my old school reports used to say - "really must try harder"!!
