As a basic rule of thumb should.

1 the amp be rated higher than the speakers?

or

2 the speakers rated higher than the amp ?

and why ?

This was a debate I might have considered wading into when I started out, but experience tells me that it simply does not matter.

The important thing is to choose your PA system according to the size of venue and number of guests that you will play to. A boring answer, I know, but that's all there is to it!

I vote for amp higher than speakers.
Then when the speakers get fried and the amp gets fixed and the speakers don't, the amp gets fried again by the shorted speakers.
Catch 22.

It shouldn't really matter as you shouldn't be pushing the kit that close to the edge. But I tend to have higher power amps by at least 1.5x. It minimises distortion and the risk of overheating the amps etc so you can have it run at a lower level.
