View Full Version : Is it a cable shorting?

Had a fantastic wedding Saturday despite a technical issue.

Access to the venue was delayed by 70 mins due to the wedding breakfast overunning. Therefore had to set up in a real hurry as coordinator didnt want to delay first dance if at all posssible!

Whilst setting up I noticed a hum on the left channel subwoofer and as the evening progressed the volume on the left channel reduced to the point where even with the channel slider up full, the VU meter would only register half way.

So when the buffet came out, I shut down the laptop and controler, replaced all the cables for the left channel and restarted which cured the problem.

Am I right in thinking that there was probably a cable short of could it be a software/laptop/controller issue?

Help appreciated.

Tricky. When I've had volume issues in similar circumstances it's been when the laptop and soundcard have lost contact with each other while working, and a reboot cures it.

Re cable issues, it's likely to be a fault in the signal cables ( only likely, not guaranteed ). I don't suppose you identified the appropriate one when you removed ot did you? If you did, then try to recreate the fault with it. If you can't, then software issues seem favourite.

Humming usually makes me think of something going open circuit (indicating a cable break).

If the vu meter on your mixer is only showing half volume on one side, then the issue is probably a bad connection or poor signal going into the mixer.

Just reread my original post and wonder if it was a bit misleading!

When setting up I did have a hum on the left channel but as the evening progressed it was volume from the left deck that was lacking.

Any song loaded to the left deck wpuld only play at half volume, all songs loaded to the right deck where fine.

Sorry

I thought I got the gist of it first time. I'm not sure now.

1) I have had the same problem with external sound cards feeding the analog inputs of a controller. As I said, a reboot cures it. It seems to be caused when the soundcard loses contact with the laptop and reconnects "live" as opposed to during a reboot of VDJ.

Right, a thought has occurred. I'm assuming you were using the soundcard in the controller, as opposed to an external one. If so, I reckon my theory above is still a possibility. If you'd been using an external soundcard, you'd have had two signal cables which is what the other posters ( and me at one point ) are suggesting as the possible fault.
