Newbee with equipment questions.

Hi All,

I've been doing a little bit of gigging work for family/friends, and I've decided to upgrade a little and go public with my services.

I'm currently running a Skytec Pro 600 (300W RMS per channel) amp, and a pair of 15" cabs.

I'm wanting to using these existing items for my backups or run along side something else depending on venue size etc.

I'm on a tight budget, not wanting to spend more than £400 second hand if possible.

I've been looking on the usual auction sites etc.


Also been trying to find reviews of various items. However, everything I read about gets mixed reviews.

I've been looking at Ohm RW5 speakers (£200) as pair used, CV2800 amps etc.


Also looking at Citronic cs1560 / pxl3600, but I cannot find anything out about these?


I would be greatful if anyone can advise me on a) Are the above Citronic cabs/amp and good, b) what would be the best for my budget?

Been looking at the citronic stuff mentioned above. Its not that cheap when new, but gets budget comments.

Any comment on the citronic kit mentioned?

Any suggestions what would be best value etc?

I had a Citronic mixer for 3yrs when I started out and it did the job, however, the difference between a cheap mixer and an expensive one is going to be mostly about the build quality and the longevity of the faders/pots. I'm not sure I'd trust an amp or speakers to a more "budget" make as amps take a hammering and are more prone to failure and with speakers you (and your audience) will hear the difference.

I'd be inclined to look at second hand kit - the PV2800 amp you mentioned is a good buy, and either OHM or Peavey speakers will also do the job.

My current options are (Hopefully around the £200 mark) for an amp

PV2600,
CFU A2 (Ohms),
CV2800 (Cerwin Vega),
PLX3600 (Citronic, so probably off the list now?),
SP1800 (LD Systems)

Do any of these stand out as the most suitable?

The fours are heavy. ;)
I'm not well up on the other amps, but the PV2600 is tried and tested. Be warned though, it's heavy. I know, I've got one. They should go for just over £200 s/h. If it's not gone yet, I know where there's a Yamaha 500OS at £300, and if I had that in my back pocket, I'd snap it up.

I'm getting out of touch with some of the newer amps, so can't vouch for them. The really good one is the Peavey IPR 1600, but it's a tad small for many jobs.

No worries, it's just that as a rule people on here respond to people they "know", doing a newbies thread helps.

Is the Yam amp a P500S? I've got some from that series. Bullet proof springs to mind. Excellent amps, I don't know why they aren't used by more people

If so, this could be in my ballpark.

I agree about the size/weight of the 4's, I could only get one in my car. Looks like the 2's will be my best option.

For anyone who hasn't noticed yet - I did manage to blend the model numbers for the Peavey PV2600 and the Cerwin Vega CV2800 (making a PV2800!)

It was the Peavey Amp I was thinking of, and if you can get one of them for £200 then you're doing well. They're good amps with a lot of punch. However, the other advice you've had is sound :D

That's the amp sorted, just need to sort out the speakers now. Probably get the hisys 2xt's

I "think" that the power rating of the P5000S, should match the 2xt's?

Unlucky! I've just sold a pair of Peavey HiSys2 speakers and I'd have brought them through for you. If you can, pop through to Electromusic in Doncaster. They havee a 2nd hand section and often have some good bargains. You will be able to have a listen too

Have you not thought of active speakers? That seems the industry standard at the moment and much easier if your new to it.
there are some excellent actives and they are generally cheaper as its all in one.

Anything would be better than sound lab, so well done for upgrading.

Mackie or tapco thumps might be worth looking at - they can go very cheap on Ebay, weigh about 12 kg each and are not bad either.

I can rep for the OHM RW5s, had a pair over a set of RWS "bass extenders" and loved them. A good lift, but the tops alone handled any parties under 100 strong.

Yep, I also used the RW series for years. Considered budget by some, they are still very decent sounding speakers IMO.

Good advice. A first rate shop staffed with people who really know what they are talking about. Buy a few things and they will usually do you a deal. You'll struggle to get amps though. The last time I asked there was nothing much in stock. Active cabs are now so mainstream that amps and passive cabs don't sell. Their words not mine! Don't ask me why, but that's how it is. You really might be better looking at 'active cabs'. and perhaps going over budget. I'm in Barnsley so get in touch if you need anything.

.....except I already got my good deal for a pair of Yamaha DSR's and a Allen and Heath Mixer. Not a bad idea though if people needing stuff bought together.
