View Full Version : What type of gig did you do this week?

Corabar Steve
26-02-2014, 04:28 PM
Just out of curiosity, I was wondering how the types of gigs we do break down between weddings, birthdays & other events.

I thought it might be interesting to dedicate a thread to what was done each weekend (if it takes off I'll make it a sticky thread so it's east yo find each week)

To avoid the same thing being posted twice, please only post what you've done on the previous (& not what you are going to do on the next) weekend

I'll start.

I had a bit of a break from the norm this week in as much as I didn't do either a wedding or a birthday. What I did was a 2 Day Steampunk festival in New Malden, Surrey. (if you have no idea what this is stick Steampunk in the search box, & all will (possibly) become clear) Background music on & off during the day & filling in between the bands, as well as judging some of the events that were happening over the course of the weekend.

Previous weekend, Wine Tasting.

Just to elucidate, when I say "Wine Tasting ", these lads (http://www.ffn-lincoln.co.uk/) do the tasting in the style of a Bier Keller. I provide the kit, they play their music through it, and lead guests through the actions/dances. When they've finished that, I get to play around an hour of music to a load of " merry " punters. Usually good nights.

Last night a ruby wedding anniversary for a the parents of a couple who's wedding I did for my first ever wedding disco working for myself. I also did the other set of parents' ruby anniversary last year.

This afternoon I've done a christening for my cousin. Lots of family there but we kind of lost out to the football that was on tv in the bar at the same time (and a terrible result for us Sunderland fans so the resulting atmosphere could've been better!).

Wedding Saturday where I arrived to assist staff and the boss of a brand new venue to unpack and fit the new dancefloor. The venue does not officially open until the 28th of this month.
It was a great night with a beautiful scene out of fully glazed south facing side.

1 hour children's party today where 3 twin sockets had no power so had to run a 20m cable to far end of the hall. Went really well after we got started.

not exactly a gig, but first outing setting the sound up and seeing if the pc would fail on dex. all went well including the roof of the building happily vibrating and joining in with some nice heavy bass.
it was a total success the pc sound system worked flawlessly.
did get a broken mirror on one of the 812's due to the roadie rushing a bit, only other issue was the excessive amount of donuts we have left..

A small wedding with 2 hours of singing and guitaring as well as the disco.

It was a great night. They had under 30 people there all staying in this palatial house on a loch. It felt more like a gig in a large living room as it was all chesterfields and lounge chairs instead of function suite type furniture.

It's the first gig I've done where I've thought "if me and the girlfriend were to tie the knot, THIS is how I'd want to do it"

This was what i got to look at from my booth :)

Friday afternoon - 10th Birthday party for a couple of hours - great fun and she had a surprise appearance from 5 men with bagpipes and a drummer (she has special needs and a real thing about bagpipes). Only negative was that the timings for the party ended up shot as the pipers turned up 20mins late so I didn't get to play as many games as I hoped, but she had a great night apparently so that's fine.

Saturday evening - I was supposed to be working in a club that I do every couple of weeks, but the "other DJ" who works there sent me a txt as I was leaving to ask if she could work instead. I've been trying to shake a headcold since Feb so I decided to have an early night and just went along to swap out a underpowered Peavey 900 Amp for a 2kw Crown, sort out some of their kit (hence the question (http://www.forum.mobilediscodirectory.co.uk/showthread.php?41678-Drive-belts-for-a-Kam-Starcluster-3D-laser) about the Kam laser) and practice some low light photography (see my timeline on facebook for the results).

A non gig wedding after 9.10pm. Major power cut in the vicinity meant that we were plunged into total darkness and silence. First estimate of reinstatement wa 11.15pm but this was revised to 6am (It eventually came back on at midday on Sunday).

Staff managed to keep the bar open as best they could, with 50% discount. I had my laptop and we hooked up some battery speakers to give some music and torches were in evidence.

At 11pm thoughm the manager decided to call a halt and closed down, moving everyone from the annexe back to the main hotel for safety and security.

We moved 3 cars round to the side and shone the lights through the door & windows and had to strip the room and pack up in the relative dark!

Still, the venue will pay me, so I'm OK. Fell sorry for the bride and groom though.

"Titanic Survivor's Theme Night".

Which was really a karaoke disco with some (not many!) attendee's in fancy dress/period costume. They had decked the venue with life belts/rings (No idea where they got these from!), a big rusty chain, make-shift anchors (of course, the real thing would been a bit too big and heavy!!) and the front of karaoke area built up to resemble the front of RMS Titanic (which was the cherry on the cake - the venue had excelled themselves here!). Best of all, for me, was that they were well up for the karaoke and it made my job as "Dazzy D, Captain of Karaoke" very easy indeed. I did spend a fair bit on "Titanic" music which wasn't particularly needed but the few tracks I did play got a good reception.

I was informed that their next theme night is going to be Rocky Horror Show. That should be a good 'un! :)

Both nights a roaring success for this club, keeping people in the club until the end both nights.

Both nights spent battling with a Pioneer DDJ SX and Virtual DJ that refuse to play nicely together (resulting in frequent stuttering and slowing of the music. Today was a christening party for my sister's two daughter's. A simple set up thrown together for quickness as I had to be at the venue at 7am this morning (I didn't get to bed until 4am!) where I greeted with the site of a fully setup disco rig as last night's DJ left it there and didn't bother to dismantle it or anything. I was doing a Wedding Party at St Albans Town Hall last night for a lovely middle aged couple. Very nice venue except for the lift which was slower than slow  but the staff were so helpful and even helped carry in some of the equipment for me :)

They were due to sit down at 7.30pm but ended up being 8.40pm. By the time the speeches had finished I started at 10.50pm, and finished at 12midnight! They had a really good jazz guitarist (John A Fordham) as background for the drinks reception and part of the meal.

We did have one uninvited guest .... A pigeon who spent the evening flying around the room. However, he couldn't stop as he wasn't wearing a dinner suit ;)

Big mistake, won't be doing that again. :daft:

Nothing wrong with that :)

TBH though....I've stopped doing kids parties if I can possibly help it. It's hard work for not a lot of money (and as a Scout Leader....I work with kids from 6-16 years old every week). I'm actually now considering after tonight not doing discos for anyone under the age of 18, and only then when there's alcohol involved (it sort of gets rid of the inhibitions they've got and makes them dance...and that's what I'm paid for)

Friday - 11th Birthday party, Grease theme - I wore a rather fetching Elvis wig. Blow up guitars and saxophones were used as weapons. Give all the kids credit though, they all dressed up and danced to rock'n'roll all night.

Tuesday - primary school disco
Wednesday - primary school disco (different school)
Thursday - local Cub group end of year disco.

Still to come: Saturday - wedding (and although I've met the client and spoken on email.....I haven't got a bloody clue what I'm supposed to be doing! Don't even know if there's a first dance...she hasn't decided). When I first met this one, we shook hands and I asked her what sort of thing she was looking for for her wedding reception entertainment. She gave me a one word answer (music), and hasn't really made any decisions from there, so it's going to be playing it very much by ear methinks.....could be fun ;)

18th Birthday party tonight, and I will be playing house music. The venue, which is predominantly used for weddings, has their own sound and lighting.

The client phoned me earlier this week to ask if I minded if one of his mates set his kit up and DJ'd for the first part of the night. So he'll be playing 7pm-9pm, and I'll play from 9pm until midnight (but still fully paid for the whole night!).

All I'll need is my laptop, Traktor S4 MkII and my headphones. Leave mine at 8pm, will take me five minutes to set up and I'll be home for 12:30.

Such a hard life...

Such a hard life...

Alright for some - my 30th tonight was hard work.
Heat got the better of the party, and with a bouncy castle and BBQ outside on the patio, I was asked to turn the decibels up in the hall so that they could here it outside.

Did manage to get a couple of decent sets going later in the evening with Old Skool 90's stuff, but they couldn't keep it up for long between them.

I did get a lot of praise at the end though, and the customer himself acknowledged the heat problem and was more than happy with what I'd done so not all bad.

Call me old fashioned though....I'd much rather have them throwing shapes on the floor rather than drinking pints on the terrace :beer1:

I'm doing a surprise wedding this week where the groom doesn't even know he's getting married!!!

It's not quite as mental as it sounds (he IS meant to marry her abroad in September) but I can't say much more about it just yet.

If nothing else I'm pretty sure it'll be a no stonewaller for the good gig bad gig thread :D

Got a phone call from a pub Friday night wanting a DJ for Saturday.

Said all I needed was a laptop, and plug into their existing system.

Since I've only ever used my own kit, I decided to have a visit after work Friday to see what they had....

Turns out their resident DJ decided to retire at short notice after 16 years...

They showed me a small white box under a windowsill containing two 1/4 inch jack sockets.

They did not really know what signal I needed to put into those, i.e. Mixer outputs, or amplified outputs etc

So, went again Saturday morning with my laptop/mixer/microphones & amp to find out.

Turns out that I just needed my mixer and laptop. (When we figured out the various zone settings behind the bar). They did not want any lighting, so nothing to worry about there.

Brief was just to play 60-80's music, not too loud, they want the clients to be able to talk. Also I was running a music quiz and prize raffle.

Never done a pub event before so this was totally new to me, so a little apprehensive, normally used to having a dance floor, louder music, flashing lights, own kit etc

Turns out I actually enjoyed this event, busy pub, kids banned, Plenty of microphone use, with the quiz and raffle, light banter etc. Not what I'm used to, but still made a nice change, and the time went quickly too.

Only had one complaint, and that was that a certain area could not hear me for the quiz, turned up the volume and that was sorted.

Told them I'll help them out again if they need cover, and I don't have a booking.

The main benefit was not having to hump my full setup around. First event I've done where I've not been knackered when I've got home :)

I've done one of those in the past - their resident DJ had been arrested for domestic abuse an hour before a big 50th so I didn't even get chance to check out the kit. Luckily I got hold of someone at the venue before leaving home and they had an old Numark CD desk wired into the system.....so just a phono lead from my desk to theirs into the right input and Bob's your uncle.....t'was a brilliant night too :)

Anyways - back to the thread.
Wednesday: (Not so) surprise 21st birthday party during which my mixer went :Censored: up - still a good night though
Saturday: Fancy dress 30th.....too hot for too much dancing but was told by the client I'd done a good job
Sunday: 14th birthday party....absolute belter with a full dance-floor from start to finish (rare for one of those).

Nothing now until next Saturday when I hit the wedding trail again.

THIS :)

Turned out to be a really good night.

As one of the few people in on the surprise (and having quite a big roll to play in the reveal as I was MCing and making all of the announcements) I was shaking like a leaf when the surprise was unveiled so I can't imagine what the girl was feeling like never mind the groom realising that this was going to be his wedding.

Was a great night.
