Either. On reading the manual for the EVL, it has a little brain which will allow you to set it up either way. Personally, I'd be inclined to go sub first, and then into the EVL, simply because if you used the EVL on their own and forgot you had them set for subs, you'd lose most of the bass.
Complicated little blighters those EVLs.
PS. Unless you are actually plugging a microphone directly into them, don't turn the individual channel gains past twelve o'clock.

Thank you so much for your help,Really appreciated.
Hopefully i will get the hang of them.I only purchased the EV ZLX12P's because of the good reviews, but i must say i am disappointed. Its a bit of a nuisance as they limit/clip very easily, which is why i got a loan of the alto sub to see if it helps. As i said before,i have never used active speakers before, maybe i need some time to adjust to different set-up and configuration.

I'm not qualified to give advice on the EVL cabs, but in general it can be best to turn the master gain up high, and turn the channel gains up as needed. Two things, check your mixer output, never run it into the red, and as said before, never go past twelve on the channel gain controls.
Google " gain structure ". ( Because it's beyond me to explain it ) Following the basic principles even a little bit can improve the system's performance no end. Opinions on how best to set your PA up are many and varied, I'm afraid. Good luck.

I'd be almost 100% certain that it has one of those gain knobs that is Line up to 12 0'clock and mic after 12' o'clock. So backing that off to the 11 o' clock position should see you right.
