View Full Version : Will my lights do?

Hi All,

Just built my 4' Rhino, and wired up the lights to test. (All linked via DMX cables, seems to work well)

Lights consist of 2 x mojo spinmaster 1 (one at each end), and 4 x mojo spinmaster 3 in the middle.

This is going to be my lighting rig. Should this do me?

I've a presentation/disco coming up soon, as well as a couple of young birthdays, and a wedding.

I'm hoping that these will suffice.

Opinions / suggestions please. (I know I've not tied the cables up, this was just a test)

Many thanks
Edward.

Look good.

Those barrel things are very hectic! I bought a couple of them when i started.
I see you are using DMX so hopefully they are under control.

Some colour in there would finish it nicely and warm it up a bit.
Just a couple of washes on the ceiling or uplighting. :)

A par can or better a couple of TRI bars would be nice.

Excellent lights, those Spin 3s. I used to have some. ;) Only downside to four barrels/two scanners is that they're :Censored: heavy!

Toby's right, some form of wash really helps. In your position, I'd say two barrels, two scanners and two wash lights of some kind would be an excellent rig. Something like the ADJ mega tri par fits the bill.

Yup, they are bloody heavy. A pain to fasten too. Clamps would be a lot easier....

Forgot to mention, I also have a pair of 4 light sequencers, which were not in the picture. Old school sort of stuff, which I kind of like :)

I'll take a look at the ADJ mega tri par stuff, but a friend of mine used to sell ADJ stuff, and told me to avoid.

What would you do with the tri par, point to the dance floor or the roof?

What's the opinion on here for ADJ lights?

Cheers
Edward.

There's certainly plenty of light to go about there! ;)

It depends on the target audience.... I don't like to stereotype, but I find your older clientele prefer nice, easy going moonflower type effects or wash effects, whereas the younger crowds will appreciate sweeping/scanner effects a bit more.

I think ADJ lighting is excellent value for money, and I'm surprised that someone would tell you to avoid!

I'm rapidly finding that I can't avoid ADJ :D I've had a few ADJ fixtures and they've all been effective and reliable.

I agree with the comments above though, lots of barrel/scan effects will give a very hectic show, it'd be good to have something with less movement in there. I'm going to throw a suggestion for a couple of Chauvet Obsession's into the mix (LED moonflower effect :D)

Interesting.

The Mega tri par and the Obsession are roughly the same price.

Or perhaps a ADJ Mega Tri-60 would do (Which would sit nicely top centre of my lighting bar?

Help!!!!!!

Which would suit my need better?

Sorry - I didn't mean to confuse things, there's too much choice out there when it comes to fixtures as it is! I agree with the comments above that adding a wash effect in with 4 scanners would give you some nice stable light, but both types of fixtures (wash and moonflower) will give you greater flexibility with your show.

I will say though that the pars of any kind are really versatile fixtures - you can put them on the bar, on the floor or use them as uplighting or as strobes (under DMX control). With moonflowers you've limited to putting them on a lighting bar.

Probably best if you just pretend I never suggested the obsessions :D

Been looking at the ADJ Mega Tri-60 bar, this would go nicely on the top of my lighting bar.

How does this compare to the Mega Tri Pars?

In the broadest posible terms, it's two Tri Par panels stretched out into a straight line. ( 9 LEDs against 10 ) Roughly twice the price, so a six and two threes.

Yeh, worked that one out :)

Just looking at the effects of the bar against the pars. The bar allows sequencing which I kind of like.

Personally, I'm more edging to the bar.

That way I can also run 2 + 4 + bar for larger coverage, with 2+ 2 + bar for smaller areas?

the bars are a one trick pony, the pars are much more versatile

Cheers Andy,

I'll look at getting a couple of pars then.

Many thanks.

I hate ADJ too

I have one Tri bar on the top and its awesome!
Solid too. Just one will light a venue, but two are better.
All of this is light as a feather and can be lifted with one hand so weight is an important thing. :)

Just to add fuel to the fire...

http://www.thomann.de/gb/stairville_led_bar_2408_rgb_dmx_30.htm - £62.00. Roughly same output, just uses more little LED's instead of a few big ones. Big difference is you can buy two of these (and a case) for the price of the ADJ bar so it opens up options again for wall washing, etc :D

No way the same output ;) - I had an LED one them before the TRI one and its at least 3 if not 4 times brighter (plus its a just over half the size 60cm vs 100cm) . I still use one for my screen so have a direct comparison - Also not being small LED's it will last longer and its metal and a much better build quality :) The par on my set up is also SUPER BRIGHT. Probably about 4 times brighter than my other many LED pars too.

I fancy the ADJ Mega stuff,

Just not sure if the bar or par will give me to best effect.

Nice Artex on the ceiling!

For me, the idea of lighting is to produce a pleasing visual effect and often, where your eyes are concerned, less is more. I used to cram as much lighting as possible into a venue but the more of it I left at home, the better it started to look (and the easier it was to transport and set up the remainder). The piccy looks a bit over the top to me. The lights are possibly a bit too close together to be effective especially where you can't use smoke. 2 barrels and 1 flat scanner or perhaps 2 of each is plenty spread over a couple of metres of truss? Have you tried experimenting with different combinations / spacings?

For example, on Tuesday, in a church hall, I used 2 Chauvet Intimidator barrels on opposite slow rotate / opposite pan with prism
/ rose gobo + variations and 4x600mm battery operated bar uplighters. That's about 20kg of lighting which took minutes to set up and the room looked fabulous - many guests came into the room and said 'wow' so I assume it must be good!

This would look good as you could aim on up and one down.
Or get the one that actually moved up and down.

Beware its annoyingly bright so not worth shining it in peoples faces! Floor or ceiling.

Uplighters give you a wow every time. Barrels give you movement/energy later on (and give the kids something to chase :D)

Toby's probably right about the Stairville bar (since he has both for comparison I can't doubt what he's saying) - I can only say that it looked good on paper :P

Would your budget stretch to both a pair of pars and the bar?

That's taking the price up a notch (£225) - ADJ Sweeper (http://www.djanddiscostuff.com/lighting-c1/led-lighting-effects-c4/american-dj-sweeper-beam-led-sweeping-narrow-white-beams-effect-light-p1325) btw. Very effective though, especially with smoke - the guys on one of the Facebook forums are going nuts for these at the moment.

I'm just looking at the "essentials" at the moment. I'll expand as funds dictate.

It will either be the bar or a pair of pars. Depends on which I should get first?

Both have factors which I like.

Like the bar, could sit centrally as an uplighter.

Like the pars, could use to remove two of the spinmaster 3's. Would help reducing the weight too :)

Oh, and the par's will be about £20 cheaper than the bar.

In my armoury, I have ADJ Mega Bars, ADJ Mega Tri Par and Chauvet Obsessions (amongst others). If you fancy a run through to Doncaster (working in Warmsworth most Saturday nights) I'll show you them working and we can have a chat.
