Equinox DJ screen - hacked

Yup, he's been at it again... I do a lot of kids parties (regular gigs at 5 local schools, monthly family night at a local community centre and then all the spin off business that comes from those) and a full rig is overkill. Instead I've been taking a T-bar with a pair of Jellydomes, a pair of Cougars, RCF PA and the Equinox Booth and then using a table from the venue.

I hate using venue tables. They're too low, they don't look professional and the Equinox screen has no weight in it so the kids have a tendency to push it around and I've seen quite a few children come close to smacking into the table behind the screen as it also doesn't provide a lot of resistance to them if they fall into the Lycra.

So... 3 panels from the Equinox screen, a trip to B&Q, a Hacksaw, a drill, a bit of MDF, two flat pars and....

The two side bars are bolted to the frame and the two horizontal bars have pins on the ends that drop into the side bars. The deck is just 6mm MDF braced underneath to stop it sliding off the bars and covered with speaker carpet so it's very light, but the whole thing is pretty stable. First time out last night and all of the bits fit into the Bike bag I use to carry my Equinox screen so it's all just there in case I need it.

The T-Bar is going to be fitted with Wireless DMX soon which means that I'll be able to put it away from the stand - better for kids gigs because then if I'm leading party dances centre stage in front of the booth, they won't be squinting at me standing under the lights. The pars will also be replaced with a 1m megabar once Thomann get stock back in (hopefully Tuesday).

Just to be clear though, this is just for the kids gigs and the times I work in limited spaces in very small venues - this is not my main rig. :D I still have a deckstand that I can use with the Equinox screen and/or starcloth and now have the DSB for larger gigs.

I like it! I've been racking my brains to think of some way to make them sturdier too, but it's not easy. This looks good, the only downside is that you can see the bar through the screen.

I was thinking about a steel rod to connect the top of the frame, but haven't got round to it yet.

Yup, but it's not too bad. The bigger issue is that you can't fold the screens flat together any more which means I now have to break it into three or four sections for transport. Not a biggy though.

I toyed with finding some way to hang the shelf from hooks over the top edge of the screen but I couldn't find anything which would do the job and be stiff enough to stop the screen from moving and the shelf from bouncing. I'm going to keep looking though.

Not a biggy though.I find them a bit of a pain to transport as it is, as I didn't get the official bag (they were out of stock for a long time). I have a bicycle bag which just about holds all four parts.

I noticed that there are 2 4mm holes drilled into one end of each frame, although they don't go right through. I've drilled them right through with a 5mm bit, and plan to pop some M5 bolts through them, and use mending plates to lock the frames together when set up. I'm going to get some M5 wing nuts from Screwfix tomorrow, so will update here - come success or failure :D
