static lights still have apart to play in a show nowdays ?
just asking as it seems everyone I notice has a plethora of wiggly moonflower style equipment or moving led stuff of the same ilk.
I don't want to go back to the good old screens that the drunken idiot manages to kick and put his foot through, but want to be slightly different.
seems the world wants to produce multi "image" moving equipment.

Sort of, yes. I often set my powerbar to a slow fade, which is in effect static lights, only the colour varying. Sometimes, particularly if someone's making a speech, I freeze them, which is indeed static.
I do however tend to add lasers, moonflowers or barrels to the powerbar on most occasions.

Moving lights, flashing lights, patterns and beams have been with us since the word discotheque was invented I would think. Why would you want static lights? It's all just part and parcel of creating the right atmosphere. Or have you had a splendid idea about using static lights that would work at a "disco"?
Or do you mean some kind of lighting that has no moving parts?

yeah I know, but just to get a different effect. think with the right items you can create something that works with the moving items. just trying to have something slightly different.
been to see a few people working I know and its pretty much the same things.
might have to do some more research..

I have my set of cheap chinese moving heads in transit ready to be delivered any time now - can't wait :lol:
I should have strapped some strobes to the order too.

On a serious note the start, middle and finish are often static at my gigs ,using blues and pinks.

But is that actually movement? ( Says the man who once insisted that his Powerbar gave movement ) If they stay pointing at the same place all the time, no it isn't. If you run sequences where some go out, and different o0nes light at different times, that's movement. I reckon Powerbars/Tripars can do either or both.

I personally think that as the club DJ/disco / roadshow years are subsiding that mood lighting and colour / effects will really take over.
I only use dots and colour fades at present including room wide uplighting and its really nice as colour is very powerful and as its professionally DMX'd it really packs a punch.

i have as per my first post will be experimenting with moving head washes as I think they are very dynamic and guests hopefully will be impressed by that. They are generic headbanger models, but I will upgrade if it looks good. I was very impressed with the zoom ones at the promobile conference as they can wash a whole wall and then change to a small spot, which is very powerful as you can zoom in and out creating a moving colour, so 4 of them will create a massively bright and impressive show if controlled properly.

Its always been my goal to minimise my lighting and I remember people laughing at me when i set up my TBAR system a few years ago, when people had overheads still with 10+ lights. I look forward to the day that a lighting system will not even be visible by the client :)

At present the only non moving light that is also not that visible is decent LED battery/wirless DMX uplighting, which is very cheap and very effective.
This was a lovely wedding i did in a marquee last year and the groom was very fussy and did not like any form of disco lighting.
I did not want to turn off the main DJ lighting but was very impressed with just using a colour wash.
If it was DMX'd with that in mind it would have been a bit better, but was great.

I agree with the dmx "mood" lighting, there is such a variety of them now too .. from the very cheap to the oh hell how much. wireless dmx is much easier than having that 20 mtr cable tucked away.
looking at possibly 16 or more to create subtle up lighting, and with dimming it should be enough to cover most eventualities with the variety of colour combinations available it can provide.
not seen the zoom ones yet, spent a bit too much on the sound trying to get it how im happy with it but the lighting has now been started on.
maybe im living on past ideas but doing some research on what is around and the present time, think I need to get out and go visit some of the dj shops around... any exhibitions coming up soon ??

Toby, I'm broadly in agreement with you here. Your intended use of moving head washes is interesting, although I can't see myself following in your fotsteps.

I'd also agree with you Toby, in terms of weddings, and possibly a lot of other functions too.

However, I don't think you'd be making a great impact at an 18th or 21st, so I think retaining a bit of versatility is vital.

I never go to a gig without my waterwave effects, they are a perfect flood type lighting without being too manic
