Shame about Reef but the rest I would welcome!! Be nice to swerve them for a night.......but you just know that their guests will be asking for them, despite the rules laid down...

When there is that many do not play tracks from all genres you wonder how many more tracks they don't want but haven't remembered.

In fairness, most of that list is overplayed cheese.

:agree: I actually like lists like that - it tells you everything you need to know about what they don't want the night to be. As has already been said, I hope there is also a good list of tracks they do want though...

Ha ha ha - I lot of people dont want these tunes anymore- Only problem is as we all know 10 pm when no one is dancing and the Cheese crowd keep on requesting thoose or simular - Its annoying ! you know as soon as you launch one its usually a packed dance floor at most family events - Still client whom pays gets what they want
I hate playlists more and more these days - Just lets us do our thing - We know what were doing and how to read a crowd - it aint rocket science and there nothing better than doing a private gig and you manage to keep all age groups and genres happy

Ooh Mr Jones, wash your mouth out with soap! Time honoured classics, if you don't mind please.
The reason they're overplayed is because they're popular, and they work. Simples.

A list like that would set the alarm bells ringing in my head. While I'd be perfectly happy to forego playing those, will all the guests? Could lead to some interesting conversations.

Sounds like a good idea.
I had a wedding about a year ago and had a very similar list.
The mother of the bride had a 'Word' :Censored: with the groom and I was asked to rip it up and play some party tunes :p
Don't mind having a selection of songs that are or are not wanted but having a complete playlist can be very hard to stick to.

Agreed. I restrict advanced requests to avoid the problem.

Most annoying things is the 'Do Not Play', 'Must Play' etc in front of every song....

I must say that considering what's on the Don't Play, the Must Play surprises me somewhat. I'll leave it at that.

That's down to the DJEP online request system. It's the category's set up on it.

Tend to agree with you there Peter. There's a few on the playlist that you'd think looking at the DO Not playlist they wouldn't be there.

I agree with that but will say that the majority of the time most of those tracks are requested at functions I do so it's a refreshing change to see them on a DO NOT PLAY list. It seems pretty evident to me that the person or people that have come up with this list do not want the 'typical party list'.
I also agree with the other comment that there may be some others that they could have forgotten but I would say that the list gives you a good idea as to the kind of stuff that they don't want.
The only thing I would worry about personally is the amount of people that may be attending that would be up for this stuff and may make a visit to the DJ booth to request it.

You'd think so - but looking at the 'Do Play' list that's full of similar tunes (if it was loads of ska, indie or any particular style or genre it'd be so much easier).
I'd read it as anything popular goes apart from the 'Do Not' list - which still leaves plenty of party classics to choose from for the crowd.

How many people planning a party actually consult ALL of their guests to discuss what music can and can't be played.
I would imagine for weddings (my regular bread and butter) its mainly the bride and groom plus a couple of friends, or occasionally their mum and dad, sitting down with a blank sheet pf paper deciding what they like to listen to. Then they will sometimes consider music for other age ranges / groups of people and finally, add "other songs that you see fit to play" as an afterthought.
Non playlists are usually only two or three specific tracks that have personal bad memories but anain, occasionally I get a whole host of no, no, no, no... when you know damn well, you will get requests in the night.
I've chucked many a list away on the night and come away with "thank you's" ringing in my ears.

I find that the majority of my customers DO ask their guests in advance and I encourage it too.
I'll send them a request sheet and advise them that sometimes it's a good idea to see what everyone wants.

How do you deal with a large playlist from a customer or do you, like me, state a limit?

It's a difficult one, yes they're paying their money so should be allowed to choose the music if they like. However, they probably aren't aware how unsuitable their requests may be.
I had a wedding once like Matty mentioned - the playlist was full of middle of the road, generally downbeat stuff like Mumford & Sons and Paul Weller. Nothing wrong with that sort of stuff at all (especially not Paul Weller!), but it's meant to be a party, and it doesn't quite cut it for most people.
I always encourage requests too, but it can very much go for or against you!
Sometimes there is a track which you'd never consider playing, but it has special meaning to the guests, and so fills the room with cheers and the floor fills. You might find the same crowd don't react to the 'tried and tested', so it can take a while to find the music to draw them in.
And on the flipside - yes, some requests are just plain awful. I find it annoying when people are really obviously into one particular artist or band, and start requesting album tracks or B-sides from them. You'd think they'd realise that it's pretty much only going to be for their benefit

Maximum of 10 each for must and do not plays
Ask what they want the policy to be if someone requests one of the do not plays (9 times out of 10 they'll say play it if someone asks)
If they dig their feet in ask if they told the cake maker how many eggs to stick in the bowl or the chauffeur how to put petrol in the car ;)

No, but they would tell the cake maker what kind of cake, filling and icing they wanted and the chauffeur the make and model of car required.

As an update the Wedding was Saturday and I've got to say the Groom was spot on. Of his "Do Nots" there was none of them requested by the other guests. We had a good mix of other stuff for all ranging from RUN DMC to Thin Lizzy.
So, it goes to prove that the B&G really do know their guests better than we do and although we can do our DJ thing it doesn't hurt to have the input from them as to what's in & what's out.
Afterall we're there to provide a service for someone's big day and I'll continue to do it like this with playlists and pre requests by guests.

Because it's their party and their wedding. If you sell yourself as someone who is flexible, friendly and experienced then you only get long lists from people who want to be hands on. Most large request lists come from people who have been at weddings and not really enjoyed the music usually because it's the same old rubbish.
I understand why some DJs have limits to their requests and if you're upfront about it with the client at time of booking then that's just a way of doing business. The amount of stories I've heard from various sources about providing a DJ with a request list just a few short weeks before the wedding and their manner of reply is pretty shocking.

Indeed, they're making a choice in the big picture and letting the professional get on with the details...

This is the exact case I had on Saturday night. I did an 80th birthday karaoke disco and was given a fair sized request list before the night (it was walk in walk out on behalf a multi-op so I only got this list 2 days earlier!!). The requests were quite varied but the result was I had a very busy dancefloor for the vast majority of the night. There was no buffet so no dead time - just pure entertainment. We had a few laughs with the karaoke as well as a few standing ovations and "Wow!!"s! But the fact that I played some tracks which I wouldn't have thought of myself had the dancefloor going crazy (which resulted in an injury to one woman - who then apologised to me!!) is testament to the fact the client knew what his guests liked and he knew better than me. I'm more than happy to concede that. At the end of the night, I had some handshakes and some really good compliments but I'm not stupid - I know I had more than a little help! ;)
