Uplighting Question

Hi

Fairly new here but been djing for years and only now getting into uplighting. I need advice before making a purchase. What would be the best beam angle or spread to use for uplighting? I've seen lights with 24 degrees up to 60 degrees. What works best for uplighting at weddings.

Also led or the newer cob?

It's down to personal preference really.

I have 40's which I find perfect, but it depends on where you have them.
40 's I find are good for walls and 20's good for corners.

If i had the choice i would get the wider ones as you can also use them for illuminating features and bands etc.

No idea about Cobs - you have to weight out price vs efficiency.
On thatnote I find lighting thats too bright is off putting to dancers, so still use the old multi LED board lights .
they are Battery & Wireless DMX which save a lot of time and effort.

Guess it depends on if you're looking to wash the walls with colour or if you'd like the lights to have a tighter beam and make a column of light.

I've got cheap uplighting, it's a tight angle (16 degrees) because they are small units I think a larger beam angle would make the units dimmer and therefore aren't going to look as good. I've considered wider angle lighting but to me I'm quite happy with the lights the way they are and even if they did look better I don't see it translating to £££

If you're considering cob lighting though I expect you're going to get some brighter lights than I have so maybe the dimming effect of wider angles won't apply as much.

My lights are the ledj colour burst.

Depends on your most likely venues but I have stock of LED par 56s and 50cm bars which cover most types of venues.

I use Stairville Par 56's, bought from Thomann and they have an approx 45degrees beam angle.

They are around £25 per light, so not too expensive and have a 3 year warranty. I've had mine 4/5 years now and still going strong!

Also, bare in mind you can get diffuse filters which can help increase your angle.

Thanks for all the replies so far. I'd like to go for the flat pars from a load in/out, storage and transport point of view. So beam angle can be an issue and good points raised so far on this.

I've seen the Ledj 5q5 in action and was looking at the Ledj Slimline 1t36 with 60 degree beam angle. To me it makes sense to go with something just out to get as long of a life out of these products.

One store pointed me in the direction of the new ADJ Dotz Par with 60 and 25 degrees beam angle with a supplied diffuser. Would give me more versatility.

One unit favoured by many happy users is the ADJ Mega TriPar. I haven't used mine for uplighting yet, but they do everything else very well and reliably.

Ditto got 32 of the bad boys in stock brought over the past four years and only one died. They are great at sending replacement boards if required. Pound for pound the best LED uplighter I've come across.

Only consideration for moving away is they are only RGB..

I use the stairville flat pars and are excellent. Keep thinking about upgrading but from a clients point of view I don't think they will appreciate the difference for the amount of ££ I would need to invest.
