I prefer the simple Martin/Acme/ADJ/MAD controllers. Gives me enough variation for my events.

I did get my Obey 70 sort of programmed once for my Mega Tri Pars, and that's as far as it went.

As a rule, I use a single XP5 for first dances , netbook-velleman DMX software and a velleman controller, set to slow rotate White gobo , thats it , after that its STL all the way.

It's my next project once I've got the time to do it.

I had a footer about with MyDMX a few weeks back as well as an Obey 70 and the software is definitely the way to go.

definitely time consuming depending on what you want to do but once it's done, it really does make a difference and I'm one of those guys that was always like, meh people don't notice. I now think they maybe not suss out exactly that it's all pre programmed but they'll definitely realise that your lights aren't just going mad all night.

sound to light is good as far as it goes. Some fixtures are rubbish at it, some are better. I like how the ADJ Revo 3 reacts week to sound. However, DMX programming then setting the programmer on sound active is the best all round solution for me. Problem is the time taken to put all the settings in, then remembering where all your chases are. I have a booklet now I keep listing all my chases etc in.
I have blocked them into different areas, such as moving heads and side par cans, centre fixture and laser etc.

I actually prefer a hardware DMX controller and playing around with the sliders on the fly live - I get a really synchronised effect that way. Even simple things like starting and stopping a scanners movement in time to the music looks great, then black out and strobe are also easily done. It also gives me something to do while the song is playing and I already have the next one lined up. It'd be impossible to pre-programme all that.

Its not too bad on controllers that allow recording by attribute. For example for a moving head you can program colours, gobos, centre focus point, gobo rotation etc on different buttons and then overlay the different attributes to create a final effect and busk the desk. Its much harder on budget controllers as you have to record everything for the chase into a single memory bank which doesnt leave much room for error and going back and editing the programs.

looking where you can write certain movement code then copy and paste it.
would make it soo much easier than having to tell it to do one thing then do it again 2 movements later.

I would also be interested in this.
I currently use freestyler and probably need to learn a lot more before I become any good at it ... currently only using the built in "colour chases" and moving head shapes (which are rubbish IMO).

Is there any controllers for DMX programs like freestyler? Almost seems a bit backwards going back to a hardware controller haha

I'm an advocate for MYDMX2.0.

I don't know if it will meet your needs, but it's the best software I have used.

have tried most but keep going back to freestyler - they recently updated the zip folders of fixture files that control your lights.

I have even started to tweak some of the fixture files to get them working better than those there with mixed results

I was dead keen to try daslight - but altho the suppliers of my dmx box saying it is compatable - cant get it to reconise it :(
