Fun or Money?

Do you DJ for fun, or are you in it for the cold hard cash?

Think it's almost it was meant to be sort of thing for me, almost all aspects I love... shocked it took me so long to realise.

My name is David James Bessant.
I wanted to be a DJ when I was 4-8 years old.
10+ I was doing drama and public plays etc, so loved being in the spotlight.
Always loved business, wanted to be "the boss" since a young age and was top of my class for business studies at GCSE age.
Since 13 I loved music, in particular Heavy Metal and learnt how to play guitar.
Learnt how to Mix when I was 17 and only really realised that I should be a full time DJ 3-4 years ago.

I think it's my perfect job.

Definitely started out as fun. Still love it, like getting paid for a hobby.

However, as I get older and with more and more gigs under my belt, the temptation is to be more selective to ensure the love affair continues.

Thought of lugging full rig with 2 subs in the wind and rain across a muddy car park and upstairs to an unappreciative audience for love doesn't appeal!

I still have fun, but the novelty and excitement has warn off. I no longer think to myself on Wednesday that I have a gig this Saturday. I prep everything the day before now (at the earliest!).

OK - I've only been back in the game since Feb this year, so still enjoying the adrenaline factor of having gigs coming up (although how long that part will last with 2 gigs a week every week for the next 6 weeks I don't know!)

As for the money side of things - I've actually started this up as a pension scheme believe it or not. Come next April when we get to the new tax year and all the kit's paid for.....anything the disco makes (after the tax man lets me keep a bit of it) is going straight into a pension pot :)

I do still get some enjoyment out the gigging side of things but I get a buzz more from being my own boss, expanding the business and those sorts of things.

I run a full time business and have done for years, so money is required to pay bills and support my family.

fun, always done it for the fun. even the packing up @ 3am on new years day. when you loose the excitement its just like having a job and you tend to not be as enthusiastic about it..

The fun aspect is what keeps me going, but as I still do it full time the money helps me.

I dont need to work as wife earns good money, and with my ilnesses I could just sit back and enjoy.

But i also have my pride, whilst these days profit is iratic each month - I just lerave it in a pot and we use it for mini breaks away :)

cold hard cash - have done a few bookings with that mentality - hated it with so much passion, I only accept bookings I know are either gonna challenge me or that i will enjoy

I do it because I love it, if you didn't, why would you? plenty of easier ways to make money out there...

The cash is obviously a pull factor too and as I'm reasonably picky, it means I'm not out drudging through a gig I really don't want to be at for buttons.


I also love my day (aka back up incase for some ridiculous reason I don't become a world famous £200k a night to open a USB file DJ :o ) job which pays well so I'm pretty lucky.:beer1:

I originally did it working for someone else for fun and for picking up women when I was a teenager.

Later I started my own disco and did it for fun.
I always found I was in two minds.
During a good gig I enjoyed it.
Sometimes there would be problems with getting paid or people moaning all night then it wasn't so good.
I guess its like any job learning to take the rough with the smooth.

I no longer do it due to it being hard work lifting the gear in and out on my own.
I also now work Friday and Saturday evenings in my full time job so that puts a stop to things.
