Anyone here know of a really good mixer, that would be used all the time just for a line in from the laptop, (with perhaps 1 integral cd deck for backup purposes, or maybe get that separately?), must have treble, bass, volume and mic controls and be from a manufacturer known for the best reliability, no integral amp needed and the sound coming from the mixer to be the best quality possible. Budget under £600.

Not sure I'm interpreting this correctly, but the one I'd go for ( without CD player built in ) would be Denon DN-X500. Doubtless there are many options, which others will give, hopefully.

Can't go too far wrong with either Allen & Heath or Pioneer.

Would a controller for the laptop with the option to add an external music source (like a CD player) be an option?

As long as you bear in mind that he may have to buy full DJ software to use it to its full potential, that's a good call. My vote in that case is VMS 4.1 That can actually be used as a full hardware mixer, I suspect, though I've never tried it.

Totally agree.
I had a Pioneer DJM600 which was 8 years old when I bought it, I had it for 3 years without a fault.

If it is an option, the Traktor S4 MKII is currently retailing at £639 from DJ KIt and comes with the Traktor 2 software. It's what I use and I consider it to be fantastic (the two channel MKII is less than £400, and again comes with the software).
If you can't stretch to the extra £40, have a dig around for the MK 1 version, as no doubt they'll be cheaper. I used to use that before upgrading, and it too is very good. Traktor also send out regular updates for the firmware and such, and are very responsove if there are any technical problems (which, touch wood, I've had happen only once to me).

I bought the CDJ400K and the DJM400k back in 2008/2009, and they're still going. I use them as my back up to my controller now, but still like to pull them out occasionally to play with.

Thanks all for the ideas. I have MediaMonkey as the music software on the laptop and as Denon seem to be one of the recommended makes, I've just come across a Denon DN-X600. What do the members here think of that particular one please?
