Single active sub recommendations

Hi All,

I'm considering purchasing a single sub to hide behind my booth, to give my current speakers a helping hand when needed.


Any suggestions which active sub would complement my DXR15's? I'll be considering the second hand market, since it will be hid out of view.

Ideally, I'll want to feed the sub with the L/R outputs from my mixer, then chain the outputs from the sub to my tops.

Must be able to fit into my car, and not be stupidly heavy :)

OK, I'll be serious. You've got Yamaha tops, so obvious choice is a Yamaha bin. Now, since you've got 15" tops, we come up against a quandary. The laws of physics dictate that the best results will be achieved with an 18" sub. Sadly, this will conflict with the fact that a 12" sub is cheaper, and more likely to fit in your motor. Also, a 12" sub is unlikely to keep up with 15" tops, especially when they're high grade Yamahas.

The logical compromise would seem to be a 15" sub. The Alto TS15 is light, and relatively cheap, but lacking the necessary oomph. If you can find one, check out LD's offering, the GT. Reasonably priced, and not impossible to move on your own. Also, its more expensive sibling, the G2 sub. Yamaha as previously suggested, DB perhaps, and possibly the new Peavey. ( Beware the older, smaller ones. They won't shake anybody's fillings out )

That's about all I can come up with.

What ever you do you probably won't be happy with if you use the 15s as tops unless you can get a good quality pair of 15 or 18" subs

Your best to get a pair of 10 or 12" QSC or RCF for the tops with complementing sub / subs like RCF 905AS

Unfortunately, transportation space is an issue, so 2 subs is not really an options here.


My initial thinking is to still run the tops full range, switching the EQ to monitor, which will reduce the bottom end, and complement this with a single sub under my booth.


I'm wanting to help my tops a little at the bottom end, using the sub to give that extra punch. Hoping that this will help with the bigger venues.

I'm surprised that you need more bass using those. They should be man enough for nearly everything a mobile jock would do. How big are the bigger venues that you need a sub for? Sorry to ask, but have you checked the switch on the back, below the contour switch, which should be in the centre "off" position when not using a sub.

Yup, that's how I usually use it.

The issue is more of volume than bass.

The thought is that if I can reduce the bass on the tops, I can push then a little harder without clipping.

The venue in question has a room which is larger than I have done before with my new DXR's.

Previously at this venue, I've used passive peavey hi2xt's with a Yamaha p6000s amp. This setup seemed to produce the sounds levels required to fill the hall.

The DXR's are hitting the limit in here. Reducing the bass does help. (I don't like running on the limiter)

I too am slightly surprised that they should be found wanting in volume. I haven't checked the figures, but finding that they won't do what a pair of Hisys 2s will is a bit of a disappointment.

As to pulling the bass off to allow more volume before clipping, well yes that will achieve that effect. The bass frequencies take the most effort to produce, so removing them from tops will give them an easier life. A thought occurs, where do you normally run the gain controls on the Yamahas? Try putting them almost to maximum, and using the mixer to achieve the desired volume. That may easily help, but be careful not to push the mixer too high accidentally.

The differences between the LD subs? The simple answer is that the GT cabs don't have a speakon output for running a passive cab as well. The fuller answer is basically the same, along with a bit of informed conjecture.

Hmm how about one of those 18" QTX passive subs like I have, some woodwork/DIY, or just get one from the guy in Burton-on-Trent who is not far away from you who will also demo it first (phone number on request) and it will be ready strengthened/reworked for about £70, then use a powerful external amp driven via an active Xover.

Run your tops from the high output on the X-over and it will sound clean.

Hell may as well drive the sub/amp in bridge mode seeing as you are running the one sub whcih means you can get away with a smaller amp and still get very good results, and as a bonus that sorts your 'left/right stereo channels via one sub' requirement out as well, and to be honest that setup should have done with it big style - and won't weigh any more than an active sub ether

This option should set you back about £200 with a bit of enlightened second hand buying ;)

Turns out to be a false alarm.....

Just returned from the gig, and all was well. The client did ask for the music to be turned higher (21st Party), which I did, and no clipping occurred, with sufficient volume and enough bass. Not sure how much more was left, I was pushing them, but they performed flawlessly.

Normally I run everything flat, and the speakers gain at 0db too.

But, I had the EQ switch turned on on the speakers, which was increasing the bottom end. Simply set that back to off, and everything was perfect. (left turned on from a previous smaller venue)

So I'm happy at the moment. :) Just I was as happy with my mic's sound.
