One for the more alternative minded Dj's I would think.
I'm really looking forward to doing this one in May. Firstly, here's the clients viewpoint on music..

"I'm holding my 40th party at my local may 9th ..i am supposed to have a disco through a friend but am not 100% confident of his reliability as have now been told he only has techno so is expecting me to supply music on a memory stick which i was not expecting and he seems less keen each time we talk...i am really hoping for someone experienced and reliable that can play a mix of hard/classic/rock/ reggae /electronic im thinking every thing from ac/dc / prodigy / metallica to johnny cash / marley / specials / pogues and more modern."

I don't have a problem with any of this (far from it!) However I'm not too familiar with Johnny Cash apart from the obvious vintage stuff. I know I've heard some really great stuff from Johnny on the radio (6 Music especially) which sounds more like it was done more recently before his death. So, bearing in mind where my customer is coming from music-wise, some less obvious Johnny cash gems would be most welcome.

These are some of the Johnny Cash songs I play:

Folsom Prison Blues (that’s a must looking at the rest of their playlist)
Jackson
Thing Called Love
Ghost Riders (In The Sky)
One Piece At A Time
Personal Jesus
Leave That Junk Alone
Wreck Of The Old '97

Hurt is great, but not an easy one to slip in...

Also check out tracks on Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline Album (one song is a duet with Johnny Cash) it’s all similar country influences and fits in well with Cash if they like that sort of thing.

Hurt is getting played to death at the moment. Bit grim, but a stunning track, from the album American IV

Much happier, Baby Ride Easy, with June Carter Cash.
Highwayman, as the Highwaymen, with Willie Nelson et al.

Not a lot to go on, but at least they're not Boy named Sue, and One piece at a time. :)

I suppose the track Ring Of Fire would probably come under the "obvious stuff"! It's good party cheese, though! :)

The only other ones I ever play are two of Martin's suggestions - Ghost Riders and Folsom Prison Blues.

ac/dc / prodigy / metallica to johnny cash / marley / specials / pogues

Although I'm not too hot on the Prodigy, this would be my kind of dream gig! Metallica, Bob Marley, The Specials and The Pogues on the same bill! This is a gig made in heaven!!

Apart from ring of fire, I think the only other track I've played on a couple of occasions is walk the line.

'When The Man Comes Around' is a great track as is 'Get Rhythm'.
As Martin says, Personal Jesus (Depeche Mode cover) is also pretty good.
The obvious ones are Ring Of Fire, A Boy Named Sue and Walk The Line.

I've been thinking about this one. Cash did a number of tracks of his own that he's well known for but the average punter might know only two or three of them. We all know at parties that people enjoy singing along to what we play so I was thinking that he did a lot of other people's songs, too. I've been looking through my albums and the album American IV: The Man Comes Around has a lot of covers on it. This is the album Personal Jesus is on, too. But, imo, one of the best known tracks is the ballad Desperado. Originally a big hit for The Eagles, it was more recently another big success for Westlife which would have brought it greater recognition to younger music lovers (yes, I did say "Westlife" and "music lovers" in the same sentence!!). It might be worth you checking this album out as there are some good, very well known tracks on there.

Good tip. Will do that. Cheers
