Help with photo hosting website please.

Hi all

I figured that there's a huge amount of knowledge on this forum, and it would be silly of me not to ask for help here first... So here goes (please be gentle with me ;))...

There's a gig coming up that i'm organising for Charity. At this gig will be a friend of mine who will be taking photographs of people arriving, and also casual photo's throughout the evening. My friend is a good photographer and is just trying to break into the commercial field, so I figured this was a good chance for him to show what he can do. He'll be pretty much around all evening taking photo's and saving them on a memory card. We do not intend to charge anything for the photo's as people will already have paid a fair amount for their tickets.

The thing is... How do I get these photographs to the guests? I had figured on perhaps uploading them to a website where people could just log on and download any pictures they would like from the evening. However, I see a couple of potential problems with this idea...

1. Is there a ready made solution for uploading a large number of photo's where people can just view and download what they need?

2. All the photographs would be available for all to see. Is there a possible data protection problem with doing this?

3. Any other suggestions / criticisms / unforeseen problems / help would be greatly appreciated.

Flickr, or you could do a custom job which uses images from Flickr through something like phpflickr.

Most professional photographers I know use www.smugmug.com which will do everything you're looking for...at a price.

Can anyone just open an account on flickr and upload a ton of photo's or are there restrictions? Would this really do what I want to achieve?

Sorry for the dumb question, but I didn't want to bother creating an account if there are restrictions placed on it.

Seems like a perfect route to take if it does everything I require.

Perhaps just add an album to your business Facebook page (if you have one), upload them there and direct people to your page? Seems the easiest option - plus, the possibility of some additional 'likes/followers' for your page.

Noooooo! This is one of my pet hates, as it would probably require people to have a Facebook account to view them. These days if someone doesn't have a Facebook account they usually have a good reason (e.g. they hate FB, are paranoid about privacy etc. etc.), and they won't join just for this. Result being they still hate FB and it's Privacy Policy etc., they still don't join, but now they know there are a bunch of photos of them there that they can't even see....

Can I just say a BIG thank you to you all for offering suggestions, i'll take a look at them all this weekend. It actually doesn't seem to be quite as complicated as I had assumed it would be.

Fair point....but, they could make the photos 'public' in the settings. So anyone with the link can view, whether a member of Facebook or not. It does however make the photos publicly view-able to anyone that stumbles across them, which may or may not be an issue with anyone that has stayed away from Facebook for whatever reason..

Is that correct? There have been a few times I've been trying to check something (or someone! ;) ) out on Facebook but it won't let me unless I sign in. I thought posts set to "public" could be seen by anyone but they still had to signed in to FB?

Also, didn't FB change it's T&Cs to say that they own the rights to any uploaded content and they can pretty much do what they want with it?

If its a public place you can take what ever pictures you want.

If its a private party then you need permission to take photo's of people.

If you are putting the pictures on a website the same applies.

I visited a heritage railway and took some pictures and put them on my website.
All hell broke loose when the railway found out.
I was told I needed "model release" on any pictures I took.
I told them the railway was a public place and so I didn't need permission and they backed down.

If you are putting the pictures on a website the same applies.


If you are the copyright owner, you don't need permission to use your own photos on the net if they are just of people and not causing any distress.
