View Full Version : To Jellydome, or not to Jellydome. That is the question!

I love the ADJ Jellydome. For what is a (relatively) cheap light, it is a lovely effect and it's the reason I use two of them as a centrepiece for my gantry.

I've decided that I'm going to use my plinths a lot more often and only use the gantry when I have to because a) the gantry is a bit more of a faff to set up and b) I think the plinths look a lot better. The problem is that with the plinths, there is no Jellydomes, so I've been working on a way to introduce them to the show.

Everyone I have said this to has pulled the same 'Ewww!' face at the idea, but some seem to come around to the idea that it actually does look quite nice (I think it does, anyway). I just wanted other people's opinions too - yay or nay to the Jellydome?

I vote for with, the lights look good fastened to the top of the truss.

Nowt wrong with Jellydomes :sofa:

I myself use a couple of them behind my booth if I'm only using white lycra instead of the starcloth. They do get people wondering how you get lights making that pattern underneath the booth. They actually work quite well when coupled with a UV bar under the booth as well (it's not quite so in-your-face as having loads of manic flashing going on under there.

Never thought of putting them out front like that before though....might have to investigate that one next weekend.

Benny, what's the difference betwen the Jellydome and one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LED-Disco-DJ-Ball-Stage-Lighting-Voice-activated-RGB-Crystal-Magic-Laser-Light-/291123075392?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item43c8499940 apart from £100?

I use three of those and I like the effect so if the Jellydome does something similar I would say yes you should use them.

Well I did use three Crystal balls but I currently have two. That's because the problem I have with those cheap ones is the keep breaking - usually due to the wires connecting the rotating LED unit to the main PCB - and I am forever repairing them which gets annoying.

I'm kinda waiting for the new Starburst to come out, as a possible upgrade but suspect I will still keep the Crystal Balls as they are so cheap

You have missed out, my friend. Putting them on white with a very slow rotation is perfect for the first dance!

The best way I've been able to describe a Jellydome (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yanM3ENuq3w) is that it's kinda like a glitterball effect. Not entirely accurate, but it's as close as I can get.

Exactly the reason I have a brace of White Spherions ;) I could have saved myself a packet if I'd thought of putting them on the front of the podiums :daft:

I take it you're quite keen on the jellydome's? I've been considering putting a couple on my speaker stands with O clamps but wondered if they'd look messy / take away from the moving heads.

I say with.
Can you not have lights on top of the totems as well as the Jellydomes or will that be too much?

Can you change the colour of the Jellydomes without a controller or DMX using the dip switches on the back please?

I've been wanting to add these myself.

There are a few varieties of this effect, is the jellydome the better one before I order one?

Think they look fine as you've mounted them.

There are moving heads on top of the plinths. :)

And yes.

Ahh right - I see Benny, totally different effect to those Magic Crystal Balls

I'm kinda holding out for these ADJ Starburst to become available, in fact I asked my local disco shop a couple months back if I can have the first one they get (or maybe two) - should be around the £140 price. Would look nice on my two wind up tripods eithe side of my booth ;)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SetHSmR7J6c

It would appear to be a similar effect at a similar-ish price?

I believe the first orders of the KAM equivalent to the Starburst (The white Stratosphere) is being shipped tomorrow but these are slightly more expensive at around £160. I cannot see any difference between these and the ADJ ones except the colour of the casing..
